  1. first cd player bought in 1983 -- a philips top loader. bought 10 cds with it -- dave grusin's mountain dance, sadao watanabe's how's everything, toto 4, born to run, darkness on the edge of town, who's next, moondance, forget the others but i still have all of them. they still sound pretty good compared to the new music these days.. i remember in malysia where i was back then, abba's greatest hits was one of first cd releases. sounded real bright and tinny played through a leak amplifier, phillips cd player and B&W stodio monitors. owned jbl l200 speakers back then.
  2. hi al thanks. i have put on some no name polycaps from the local electrical shop for the moment while waiting for north creek music to ship across the harmony caps. will be updating the woofer inductor to air core shortly too -- and freshen up the internal speaker wiring with wire from NC music too. then i might try the type A setup to see if it might suit my system/room/ears better. thanks to all the information gleaned from the forums. you guys are the real deal for a parts swapper such as myself.
  3. hi guys i have read Al K recommending that if one had the type aa, one should do three things -- take the zener diodes off, remove the steel tweeter inductor screw and put a 3.9uf cap across the 2uf cap before the tweeter to bring it up 6uf. has anyone done the 3.9uf mod and also added this new tweak with the 1uf cap? should this be done? i too have added to one uf cap and the difference is not negligible! certainly much more improvement than removing the zener diode and steel screw combined. rgds Peter
  4. hi tom thanks for the replies. didn't think it was glued in but just wanted to make sure before i applied a flamethrower to it (that pic was a hoot...lol) although i was thinking along the lines of a 12-pound sledgehammer which we use as the first point of reference to deal with stubborn articles down here in the antipodes)
  5. i removed the four screws holding the tweeter but then found the tweeter seemed to be stuck on. is it glued on? anyone can advise on how to remove the tweeter? thanks for your help peter
  6. here's a couple: eva cassidy - live at blues alley -- what a great singer -- she interprets songs using jazz styles, blues, gospel, r & b -- sometimes in the same song -- very subtly and most deliciously -- classy. punk jazz -- jaco pastorius anthology -- get to hear some rarely heard cuts with him as a sideman. great music.
  7. van's live albums a darn good too: too late to stop now and live at the belfast opera house -- killer backing bands. moondance remains an all time fav.
  8. hi there just wondering if anyone can tell me when my la scalas were built? they are stamped 6P806 and 6P807. they have AA networks. any other info on them much appreciated thanks Peter
  9. hi Q-man thanks for your advice. I will certainly have a look under the baseplate. I am sure that the la scalas have remained totally stock. the reason why i am looking into the x-overs is because the previous owner had not lavished much care on the speakers and the cross-overs are looking fairly grubby -- not as pristine as i would like -- the exterior of the caps are showing their age, soldered areas not shiny, that sort of thing. It still sounds wonderful though!! when i got them, the raw birch had turned a silvery grey and there was dust everywhere and the tops were de-laminating in places. the interior containing the dog box was perfect though dusty. Anyway, thus far, i have fillled in the little holes, and knocks and sanded everything down to a very fine finish and given it a rubdown with wood oil. It looks beautiful now. however they are 80s or pre-80s and given their age, i was just wondering if replacing the caps would help. to mike: thanks -- i will have a look at Al's schematics and see where to go from there. thnaks everybody for the help.
  10. hi all i am happy and proud owner of a pair of la scalas which i am working on to refurbish. it has the AA crossovers but the labels on the back are so weathered, i have no chance of reading the serial numbers and so do not know their vintage. a couple of queries which i hope will be answered. ho can i refurbish the AA crossovers? is it just a matter of replacing the caps there? if so can someone tell me the values of the caps to be replaced and the brands and type that I should get? I am from New Zealand so am relying on forum members to point me in the right direction. i appreciate any replies i get. second question is: the bottom baseplates (that holds the little studs to place on the floor)of the speakers appear to have bowed so there are gaps: does this affect the dogbox? for example should i fill in the gaps with putty such as blue-tac? or there is nothing to worry about? as i understand it, you need to remove the baseplate to get at the woofer -- so is there already a gasket there? thanks in advance for your help. best regards to all. Peter Martinez
