  1. Hi All,

My son was rocking out the house last night, a
little Black Sabbath War Pigs. He comes down to tell me he thinks he
damaged the speakers because he smelled smoke and they started cutting
    out.

I went up to check and found the right speaker had an odor
omitting out of it and no sound coming out of the woofer driver. the
left speaker had "plopping" sound coming out of the woofer driver but
would firm up when I would put my hand on it. Both tweeters seem to be
OK. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Tom

  3. I did some research on what those trim pots do, and all I found was this on Audio Asylum:

The pots are used to adjust output level of the + and - phase output for each channel. You need a sine-wave test CD as source and an oscilloscope to match the amplitube of + and - output.

I'm not sure about using a VOM.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Play a test disc with a 1kHz tone and set the volume control to 75 on the display. Now set the VOM to AC setting and measure the voltage btw the phase + to ground and phase - to ground.

Now, turn the trimpot until both phases voltages are the same. Repeat the other channel. I got this info from SF.

I'm not sure what there refering to as to what phase + phase - is, can some one be more specific on what I'm suppose to be plugging my VOM leads into, it would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Tom

  4. Hi Guys,

Maybe someone can guide me in the right direction. I've heard of nothing but great things about the Sonic Frontiers Line 1 pre, so I picked one up on the secondary market since they can not be had new.

My system is very revealing, and I have been going around in circles between cables & tube changes trying to eliviate to what I equate to a shreiky upper mid which makes it intolerable to listen to cds (on a Musical Fidelity A5) at moderatley higher levels. The analog front end is a bit more forgiving but can still be a bother.
I was ready to condem the Line 1 as just not being a good match for my system when I noticed those trim pots inside. I know I'm not suppose to adjust them, but since this a used unit with some history and having the problem that I'm having, I decided to turn them down. Taking note as to there original position I began to turn them down incrementally, the more I turned them down the more balance the sound became, even the highs became more detailed and focused, and was able to turn it up without wanting to run out the door.
I have concluded that someone on deafer ears than I turned these up, can anyone provide me with some assistance on what would be a optimal position for these pots or do I just adjust them until it sounds good?
    Thanks,
    Tom
  5. Hi All,

Can anyone tell me why I hear a popping noise through my speakers when I turn off my pulley motor to my Scoutmaster. I also pick up the same popping yet louder when I click off and on a halogen lamp I have next to my turntable. The motor is plugged into the same power conditioner as my components and yet the lamp is plugged into the same wall outlet as the power conditioner, any clues?

  6. Lonelobo,

You'd have a field day at my house. I have about 500 to 1,000 NM LPs I'd be willing to part with for next to nothing. Good titles too. No Polka or Guy Lombardo (gave all that stuff away long ago). Lots of good classic rock (Little Feat/Floyd/Tull/etc) and plenty of good classical and jazz. I was a thrift store junkie for a few years before I got hooked on Japanese and other audiophile pressings and had to start all over.

Just get in the car and head northeast. If you hit the Atlantic Ocean, you've gone too far!

    Gary,

How much would it cost to ship 500 lp's to 60107 area code?[:P]

  7. Hi Guys,

It's been awhile. The last time I did some regular posting here was about two years ago, family issues and financial situations caused me to lose focus on my love of music and the equipment that accompanies it, forcing me to sell all but my La Scala's and rebuilt and modded by me Dynaco Mark III's. Thanks again to all the forum members that helped me out by purchasing the equipment at the time of need. Well I'm back thanks to this forum and a few members that I have aquired some of my (to me) new equipment and the rest basically picked up on Audiogon.

After months of trial and error, buying and swapping equipment in and out of my system, trying to capture that "magic" that I once had, finally came to a conclusion on the analog side last night with the final tweaks to my newly aquired ScoutMaster with Signature JMW9 arm. I have a DL103 cart on this rig and the mass of the arm does not allow for proper VTF adjustment, plus causing it not to sound all that great. I didn't have headshell weight handy so I took a penny with some modeling clay stuck it dead center just behind the mounting screws of the cart on top of the a headshell, doing so adding 3.1 grams of mass. I then set the VTF at 2.5, adjusted the azumith (sic), VTA, and when I sat down to listen to some Steely Dan Aja, I got the chills and had smiles from ear to ear, the taught bass, that in the room midrange, all and all a very musical presentation that draws you in.

It's been a fun ride back, and I'm glad I got my sounds!

    Thanks to all,

    Tom

  8. That tweeter circuit is too hot as it is -- if I was building them for me I would use Auricaps or V-caps. I wouldn't bother with the kit, just buy the parts yourself.

    Dean,

I started looking up the parts to build this and some of the components like the coils, autoformers and terminal strips I couldn't find. Is there a one shop source for all the components?

I'm not sure I understand what your refering to when you say that tweeter circuit is to hot an to use Auricaps or V-caps, are you saying to use them as a sonic preference or that will help tame the tweeter issue.

  9. Tom,

I am considering building them also, I would perfer to buy a set which have the Hovland as apose too the Kimber caps that now come in the kit. I could be splitting hairs here and there may not be a difference but why chance it if I can buy a set that I'm familiar with its sonic qualities.

  10. Hi all,

I'm in search of some ALK's for my La Scala's. I'm in the process of pieceing my system back together and wish I never sold them at this point. What a difference in transient response and attack they bring to the table. If someone has a set they are interested in selling let me know.

  11. Hi All,

I have a Direct TV satalite receiver DVR and a Pioneer Elite vsx47tx receiver, ever since I employed the Direct TV dvr into the mix, when switching stations from non HD to HD format and the dolby digital feature activated on the dvr, at times you'll get a large cracking sound which makes what appears the receiver go into a audio shut down mode and I have to cycle the receiver off/on to get it to broadcast the Dolby digital sound. anyone have any clues on what to do. I've already had Direct TV replace the receiver, still having the same problem.

    Thanks,

    Tom

  12. Hi All,

Would someone have a parts list and directions on how to build some AA networks for my La Scala's. I have the schematic but unfortunaletly I can't read one to make enough sense out of it to build. If someone can help me out it would be appreciated.

  13. The Rogue Magnum, ALK's, Anthem pre phono stage are all sold, thanks to you all that have inquired and purchased.

The La Scala's are still available, along with cables, tubes & the Panamax 5100, which I have adjusted the price on.

There are a few more items that I came across that I think might be of interest, I will post as soon as I get some free time.

    Thank you again,

    Tom

  14. Tom,

I am interested in the pre-amp and the phono, I need more details. PM me or e-mail or give me a number to call you. Also I am looking at the ALK's.

    Jay

    Jay,

Can you send me your email address so I can send you the pics you requested?

    Thanks,

    Tom
