What good would that do him?  🤷‍♂️

Sorry that is for the RC7 as you noted, my bad.  that one seems to have been sold already.

  2. I just finished cleaning up a pair of of RF7 MK1s. I took them all apart. Removed the foam. Replaced the leads on the crossover. The boxes are still a bit rough but I am thinking about applying a new coat of stain on them. Something dark.  Maybe even pain the black.

What do you think these would be worth when done?

Here are a few pics of what they look like now.

It’s not the crossover, because if it was, neither of your woofers would be working. So, it’s either damage to the driver, or your little buddy chewed through some wiring.

Use a Torx bit #20 to remove the screws to the back plate. Inspect the network and the wiring. With a good flashlight, you can inspect the wiring through the rear.

Same Torx bit for the woofer. Avoid power tools and take your time. Once you get the woofer out, put a meter to it.

Funny thread, do some people actually not know there is only one “deang”?

I got the speakers out and the ohm out to the following:

    Tweeter - 6.5

    Top woofer - 6.7

    Bottom woofer - 6.9

I also did a 9v test on them and they did crackle a bit but the diaphragm did not move much.  I assume because the 9v battery I was using was not powerful enough.

I will be pulling out the crossover today and cleaning and inspecting it. I will update.

Thanks again deang and all who have advised me here.  I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your input!

  4. Update.

Finally was able to safe break the seals.  And as I was taking the speakers out I get hit by the smell from the mice that was in it.  That foam will certainly need to be replaced. So I am needing to source that as well. Then I will work on the exterior.

I believe this forum member performs RF-7 crossover work. His contact info is in the link I provided.

You'll have to contact him for costs.

I did email him but he no longer works on this line of speakers:

I don’t really work on these anymore. I only work on Heritage networks.

Have you contacted Klipsch support to see if they might have a replacement?

    But thanks for the reference.

I will be contacting Klipsch sometime this week.

Why do you need new crossover? Thanks

Well, One of the reasons is that when I got these I knew they were mistreated. But it was such a good deal I thought I would get them and clean them up.  I just had no idea that they were going to be as bad as they are. And they are / were really bad.

The crossover on one had a dead mouse still knotted up inside.  So my guess is that it met with an untimely death and took out part of the crossover in the process.  The middle woofer and tweeter are still working. Just not the bottom one. I have not gone thru everything on the speakers yet but I will over this weekend.  Or at least as much as I can w/o breaking anything. Still trying to get the bottom woofer out.

  7. I know this forum is filled with updated crossovers for this particular speaker. However, I am just wanting to replace what I already have because at the moment the upgraded crossovers are cost prohibitive. Is there anywhere that I can either send in mine for repair? Or is there anyone that is selling crossovers for this speaker or is there a crossover that I can buy that's equivalent?  Any help would be great. Thank you

Fwiw, the original RF-7s do GREAT with music when set up correctly. I upgraded constantly until I got these bad boys 20 years ago. I auditioned for another couple of years and then decided we were set!

What is considered to be 'setup correctly'? I am new to this level of audio so not sure what that means and I know its something different for every ear.  But if I can get a baseline of what you mean it could be helpfull.

    Thanks,

Good, that should help a little.  I had thought once upon a time I had seen a similar complaint of the RF-7's on the forums here.  If I'm recalling right, there was some fiddling with fabric in or around the horn that resolved the issue.  I'd have to search the forums though to find exactly what it was.

Yes, I saw the same thing in this and other forums talking about lacing the twitter with a dampening foam.

My biggest issue now is trying to remove the large drivers.  They are not as simple as I thought they should be removing them.  Been trying to find something on the internet that will show me how to remove them without damaging anything.  Still trying to clean them up.

I didn't see if you were running a sub but if it can keep up with the RF-7s I'd set a crossover (60 to 80 hz) to relieve some stress on the AVR. Of course, if you don't have a sub set the speakers to large. That's my 2 cents

Also I believe in the adage, " Sub should be felt not seen."  Well thats what I say anyway :)

I will say that I tend to ignore what my pre or AVR's say with configuration at the front when using floorstanding or full range speakers.  I would encourage you to run them large if you aren't doing so already.  That should help a little bit too.

I am running them large.  That was the first thing I changed.  I do find them  still a bit brighter than I like but one step at a time ;)

I am running 2 subs in a 6.2 config.  I currently have the crossover set at 200hz.  But I have seen the recommendation of 60hz in many places it I will be doing that next.

Would cut off any theater modes and try direct 2 channel stereo mode, full range set to large first @Remy65

I finally got an Audessy mic and was able to calibrate. It now sounds much better!  I do plan to do some tinkering to try and get warmer tones from them. Then again it just maybe what they are.

  14. Hi all,

    I have a bit of a dilemma.

I have the above. I use to have RB 51 I bookshelf's and they perform well above expectations. I just got the Marantz about 2 months ago.  So I recently purchase a pair of RF-7 classics with the cherry finish and the folks that had them before me did not take care of them. I spent the first hour just cleaning them up.

I finally hook them up (even thou they are not completely clean yet) and they are very bright. The RB-51's were very soft and pleasant to listen to.  I know that I am entering in a new area of audiophile when I picked the Rf's up but I am supposed to be wowed.  My hope is that I have no idea what I am doing and someone will point out the glaringly obvious thing that I missed and life will go on. That's my hope.

The other thing is that they also have damage on the cones. one is really bad.  See photos. In some as you can see there are still some dust in the twitter.

I suspect that I need to run thru the setup again with the new speakers and that may resolve my issues. But I need to borrow the mic back from a neighbor of mine.

What I hope is the good news in all this is that I only gave $200 for the pair.

My current plan is to take them apart and clean them up best I can then see if I can get someone to apply new laminate.

    Any advise would be appreciated.
