  1. Ok. That makes sense now. I do understand that changing the counterweight alone does not change the tonearm’s impact on the cart. I just thought you had to have two turntables or swap out the tonearms!
  2. Well since I didn't keep one bare I couldn't compare them in the speakers. Subjectively they sound better, but that may just be wishful thinking. I did compare how they sounded when I knocked on them duing the application. The wrapped one went thunk and the bare one rang like a bell. It was a fun activity, and I cleaned all the dust bunnies out of the cabinet.
  3. That turntable rig is insane. I assume there is a reason for the two tonearms, but if you already have perfection what does the 2nd one get you?
  4. My horns are out and all cleaned up. For those of you who have wrapped your horns, did you just measure and cut the pieces to fit the four sides, or do you think it is necessary to overlay the material? My Kilmat is arriving today, hopefully. I'm going to first tape them with the yellow easy release Frog tape and then put on the Kilmat. I'll post pics when complete.
  5. Great shirt! OK, so here is what I was playing most recently. This is my Dual 1229Q TT, which I hook up when I want to play quadraphonic (what the "Q" is for). I have several vintage Pioneer turntables that are also quad "rated", but the Dual currently has an AT 1440MLB cart which is the only one that can do CD-4 (quadradisc) records. Sticky Fingers is, obviously stereo. Can't you hear me knocking?
  6. So, is this the best $9.99 I ever spent? I'm sorta feeling like yeah, it is. I hooked up my sub last night, via speaker cables to and from the sub, and it was not awesome. But this little LOC, intended for a car stereo subwoofer connection, arrived today. Wow it actually delivers! Is it really hi-fi? I don't know and I don't care. Now I can just focus on enjoying my La Scalas and not critique each song for a lack of bass. You may think there is no way a 12"sub can keep up with these speakers, and that is certainly true, but at even moderately high volume the sub adds that punch I was missing.
  7. I'm buying 18 ft of Kilmat. Is the roller needed to improve performance vs. just pressing it on?
  8. I have two subs. And other stereo/quad gear not pictured. What does your setup look like?
  9. Thought I would post a pic next to the JBLs, which can at least claim to be an inch taller.
  10. Yeah, maybe if my XOs were AA or AL-3. I have no doubt replacing those 40 year old caps would make things better, and there are some who feel the AL XO is perfectly suited to the original drivers in my speakers. Still, based on the vast majority of posts, that XO network does not get a lot of love. I would always be wondering if I made the right choice when I could have just bought new and been done with it. What XO is in your La Scala?
  11. So all drivers are working now. My new K-77M diaphragm seems a little brighter/crisper than the old one in the other speaker. Overall the speakers sound fine, but I'm not awestruck yet. I think my JBLs sound punchier, for lack of a better word. I recognize there are so many factors at play. Maybe the AL XO will be the first thing to be upgraded, i.e. replaced. I might wrap the K400 (over painters tape so I can later remove). Seems like a controversial topic! Before I do that, I recall there was a tip about putting a bead of silicone around something on the squawker, perhaps where the driver screws into the horn? There is a thin red gasket there now, that seems pretty brittle.
  12. Great tip. If I end up doing this I'll tape it off first. Thank you.
  13. I'm interested in trying this, on just my K400s. For those that chose dynamat, Sonic Barrier or Noico, have you kept the matting on? Did you use 80 mil (2mm) thickness? Also, how hard is it to remove if it turns out I don't like it? AL K. also recommended doing this.
  14. New question. What are thoughts on running new wire from the drivers to the XO? Any benefit to that? Any particular wire to use/avoid? Thanks in advance.
  15. That is where they are out of stock. Did not tell me until I ordered it. Found it elsewhere so back on track.
  16. OK, so to close the loop I tested the good tweeter with the suspect XO and the tweeter worked fine. Too bad my new diaphragm that I ordered is now on backorder.
  17. You mean the labels on the back with the Type, Serial, Inspected and Tested? Yup. in good shape. I absolutely believe the speakers came with grills. Maybe they were later modified from staples to velcro. Are you suggesting a S/N lookup could confirm that?
  18. No I did not. However, I did the ohm test on the good tweeter and got a positive resistance reading, so that confirms a good tweeter vs. a bad tweeter.
  19. She is a rescue. We also thought mostly Doberman. I paid for a DNA test, which I kinda doubt. She is supposedly mostly pit and lab. She loves to fetch, and her paws seem more webbed than other dogs, so maybe the lab part is correct. But her coloring and nose is sure Dobie looking. Regarding her intelligence, looks can be deceiving!
  20. Yup, seems like a bad tweeter. Swapping the tweeter did nothing. However, I also ran a few tests with a multimeter. 1. I Set it to ohms/resistance. Disconnected the wires from the crossover to the tweeter and put meter leads on each wire. I should read some resistance across the tweeter; less than say, 10 ohms. If the meter doesn't read anything, the voicecoil is open and the tweeter is bad. I did not get a reading. So tweeter is bad right? Probably. 2. To check the XO, I set the voltmeter to AC Volts. Attached leads to the screw terminals I removed the wires from. Turned the volume all the way down, and played static over the speakers. At no volume I should read 0 Volts or close to it. That happened. As I increased the volume, the readout should go up and that would confirm the XO is fine. If the reading doesn't respond to varying the volume control, the crossover is bad. Unfortunately the reading stayed zero. I still think the tweeter is bad, but I may also have a problem with the XO. Small consolation, my grills are removable. Not sure if velcro was standard, but why else would the surround be black if these grills were not original ? If it was an add on you would think it would finished around the squawker and tweeter. The horns by the way are metal, and filthy.
  21. Well some good news. Seems like I have one bad tweeter. The squawker is good! Terrible wires on the squawkers. stripped off an inch on both and reconnected for now, but they need replaced. I'm going to disconnect the tweeter wire and just run it to the other speaker (disconnecting that tweeter too). Easier than swapping tweeters. I'll update with a pic of the backside once done but likely ordering 1 tweeter diaphragm for $57 dollars. Winning!
  22. Funny, my back speakers are JBL 4410 studio monitors. Same tweeter as the L100T.
  23. My JBL L100Ts are not so heavy, maybe 70 lbs, but the nice thing is the port in the back is a great hand hold for moving them around.
