Should I? or Should I? khorns
playntheblues replied to playntheblues's topic in 2-Channel Home Audio
Damn, I knew you guys were going to be practical! LOL -
Well.....I'm picking up my khorns early Sat. Morning the 21st. They are raw burch with cain grills that need cleaning (spots etc. etc.). I am going to refinish them in black and replace the grills. Sooooooooooooo the question is do I haul them upstairs to the game room, seal them in the corners and listen to them for a week or so or put them in the garage (heated) and get them ready for the stain and repair work? I could have them done by next week end and than haul them upstairs for good. Any thoughts?

Greg, Thanks I feel better about them fitting in the truck now, if they fit in your Tahoe. I think sheltie dave had some good advice too. Don't do anything to them for at least a couple of months and get use to them. Good advise....but it might be had to follow . My Cayin amp is 35 watts push pull with 4 el34's, but you can remove the 2nd and fourth el34, rebiais (spelling?) it and it is NOW a 4 watt S.E.T. amp. Can't wait to play -

Thanks sheltie dave. I have a Ford Excursion so it should be an easy move. I do have to bring them up to the second floor at home though -

For the pair -
Please welcome a pair of.....KBBR Khorns Serial #'s 6506683, 6506685. After talking with the guys at Klipsch, we are sure that the "0" is probably a d,g or c. Ether way I will pick them up on Saturday morning . Now for the best part...This guy had them on ebay in Ft worth (I'm in Dallas) starting bid was $800.00 I emailed him the first hour and asked him what his buy it now price was before he had any bids. He responded with his phone number and a price $600.00 . I have heard about these deals but have never seen any YAHOOOOOOOOOOO! They will be mated with a Cayin TA 30 with focus control, bias, sub out and upgraded caps (aura?). They will be placed in my game room 25' X 15'. Along the 25' wall. I am told they work perfectly and that the finish is very good. The cain grills have some spots so we will see if they come out or have to be replaced. This guy has owned them for 8 years and has replaced one of the diaphragms in a tweeter. Now for the bad or not so bad news. One of the speakers has a 2' water stain on the bottom . Apparently this happened prior to his purchase but I have been assured that the birch is fine etc. etc. other then the water mark. I will update everyone this weekend after a nice scotch and some good jazz . I do want to thank everyone for their help and patients as it has been very helpful in my search. Which by the way has taken about two years. Now only to be able to sleep the next couple of nights. All the best, Guy

Thank you, The serial numbers I was sent are 7 digits with no letters, unless they were misread the numbers are 6506683, 6506685. Maybe the 0 is a D and just misread??? -
Hi, is there a place here or on the net where I can date my Klipschorns? I have the Serial Numbers and would like to date the speakers. Thanks and all the best, Guy

FOR SALE 1976 CORNWALLS DESIGNER SERIES $850.00

Hey Mobile, Guys, Yeah I am fortunate to have what I feel to be a VERY good inexpensive set up. I run my SATV box and CDP digital outs through a Theta Digital decoralator and then into an ack industries dAck. This dac is battery powered. No background noise what so ever, it is 16/44 with no upsampling. Sounds very close to vinyl. The system in powered by a Cayin TA-30, which has no noise at all. The sound I get from my GR research P-3's (91.5 db eff.) is very clear and articulate. These are a transmission line speaker MW-TW-MW. The bass is -3db at 35 hz. and with the two 6.5 mid woofers it is extremely fast and articulate. I feel this is just a preference thing. My ears and those are the key words my ears feel like the cornwalls have a rag over the tweeter and midrange. The bass all though fun is not clear. My neighbor is a regular here and was kind enough to come over last night and help with speaker placement. He has 3 sets of cornwalls. We listened four a couple of hours, his CD's and mine. Jeff thought that they sounded great and that's how cornwalls sound. Again I want to emphasis that I'm not knocking the speakers its just a taste thing. I am use to a different sound. I define it as clear and articulate, but that is my definition and reflects my tastes. I am certainly open to all thoughts as this is a journey and a GREAT hobby. All the best, Guy -

I just purchased these from the original owner and I hate to say it but they are just not for me. They have a medium brown stain. All original, Alnico Type B crossover. They have Klipsch Grills and name plates. Condition is 9.8 -
Mark are your cornwalls sold??? Thanks, Guy
-
sheltie dave, Go for it! I think I need a single K-horn, or a pair of cornwalls against one wall. For that matter a pair of Blose er...ah... I mean Bose 901's suspended from the ceiling might do the trick as well. All the best, Guy
-
The Cayin is a 30 watt a side integrated el34. After doing some more reading it sounds like the shorthorn was the predecessor to the Cornwall and was listed by Mr Klipsch as one of his mistakes . If you put Cornwall flat against the wall, lets say the 16' wall as opposed to the 24' wall. This would probably still sound better than a mono set up? Right! Its hard working around a 8' Pool Table
-
Hello again, I am toying with the idea of buying a Shorthorn for my game room. I have one Corner in the room that would work perfectly. This would also allow me to finally put an 8' pool table in their without worrying about loosing the stereo imaging. Now for some hopefully not to dumb questions. First) I dig the whole vintage thing so that's not a problem, however if the horns die can the be rebuilt or replaced? What would ones options be if and when the horns finally die. (I assume the woofer could be reconed so no problem their) Seconded) Don't start laughing at me To run the Shorthorn mono.....Would you run both left and right signals to the speaker via some bi wire cable run backwards or how would that work? Third) In a 16' X 24" game room how do you (or what do you) think this mono set up would sound like? I would be running it with tubes (Cayin TA-30). My thoughts would be to suspend a 32' TV above the speaker. Ascetically it would work perfectly. I just don't want to go down the wrong path if the whole mono thing doesn't sound good. As always Thanks and all the best, Guy
