  1. That's cool! I'll bet you'll be very happy. Get this --- The seller lives less than 2 miles from my work. I just picked it up. This guy's dad is an audio nut and electronics repairman. I saw NOS tubes EVERYWHERE (Of course, none that I needed) He had a set of "High - Fidelity" S-C monoblocks he just sold. On top of all this... he may have some old K-horns for sale (he's not sure what kind of speakers they were but "they were a funny shape and had horns". He's calling me tomorrow... About this amp. It's integrated preamp/amp I was told that 3 of the tubes tested at just under 100% and the fourth at around 80%.....what does that mean? I just popped the hood... I can put 6BQ5's in the output or EL84 Right now it has 8BQ5(RCA) and 6BQ5(japan) on channel A and EL8?(unknown) and a 6BQ5(RCA) on channel B Will any of this matter? The pre amp section uses 6AV6 (2) and 6U8 (2) 1 per channel It has bass/treble/gain separate for each channel, master loudness, Phono AB and BA, Tuner and Aux selections, and can bet set to run stereo or mono. Looks like it can support 4/8/16 ohm speakers. Also there are 2 hum adjustment reostats you set w/a screwdriver (forgot the tech term) Now I just wish I could go home and enjoy it. Oh well back to the grindstone. I'll post after I give it a good listen. I'll also be asking if there are any quick mods I can make to help. BTW How long should I let it warm up?
  2. Does anybody know about these amps? I just got it off E-bay Stromberg - Carlson Tube Amplifier 1958-1959 Stereo or Monaural tube amplifier Model #ASR-333 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14973&item=3008713458&rd=1
  3. I'm in the same boat. I asked the same question about a week ago, and got a wealth of info. Here's the thread http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=30954
  4. I just wanted to send a thank you to all who helped. a BIG thanks to Trey Cannon who dug through the log books for me. The final tally: Cornwall II's - 2K290/291 model C-HR-15 Date of manufacture: Feb 7, 1972 C- Cornwall HR - horizontal (parallel to long edge) Raw finish. Shipped w/K-33-p, K-55-v, and K-77 #17 grills. So to date, both tweeters have been replaced with K-77M all else is stock. Thanks again for the help.
  5. Man!! got out-bidded on audiogon. If the person who got it is on this forum - please post your findings about this amp. (especially how it handles rack music )
  6. Trey, Does this hold true for the "Cornwall II's" (first version) I could swear they were '69 (the QC labels were ruined in a fire) but your info puts the date at '72. Thanks.
  7. http://www.sophiaelectric.com/pages/amp/ampbaby.htm I'm looking at maybe getting one of these (my first tube amp.) Whadayall think?
  8. That does help somewhat, thank you. (although I don't know what SET is or does - same for push pull) I realize the end-all, be-all of this is to sound as good as possible, but right now I'm looking for a bit more theoretical and instructional - in general, moreso than specific - so that regardless of my listening tastes at the time, I'll know what to expect from various types of amps. Tom, I hope you don't think I don't appreciate your help - far from it - It's exactly the kind of answer I'd give if I were asked. But without knowing all the different options, I could never be in a position to offer that kind of advice myself. (and boy do I like to give advice )
  9. Musical tastes: any and all (not so much on rap) Classical, jazz, blues, alternative rock... Room size: presently 16 X 25 ish - present config: corwalls spaced along long wall about 5 ft apart - couch directly across. (if we're getting specific - I have vert mounted drivers) not sure what 'spl' is... If it refers to volume, My favorite way to listen is not too loud, but above just normal conversation level. Second favorite is as background music. Third is TOO LOUD!
  10. I've been readily enjoying this forum for about two weeks now. Although I love my cornwalls to death, I have only ever heard them on SS amps (Carver CM1090, Marantz MA500, Sherwood Newcastle R945) Now I'm hearing that a tube amp will really make a difference. (Ingorance is bliss, I guess) So here are some questions. I haven't seen these question on the board -maybe it will serve as a primer for other newbies. What is the difference between the technologies - heck - that ARE the technologies? Would I be wise to go for a DIY kit (I'm pretty good with a soldering iron and think it would be cool) What should I be listening for, anyway? (I realize that's subective, but I guess mainly with respect to differeing amp types and technologies. ie- A SET amp will sound more xxxx vs. SS and more yyyyy vs. Push-pull") There. I hope a haven't dumbed-down this forum by asking this, but I'll bet there's more than a few lurkers out there who'd like to know these and probably other questions I've forgotten (or don't know enough) to ask.
  11. Thanks, Art My check will be on its way tomorrow.
  12. What about scanning into a .pdf file? It only has to be done once, then it could be printed by anyone. I'll bet kinko's can do that, you'll save the printing, paper and the shipping costs. (although the loss of business may have them ask for a higher rate.) Then it's simply an attachment. But Either way, I'd love to be in on this as well, Thanks.
  13. So how much is too much? does 105 mean 105? These are probably pretty stupid questions, but now I'm a liitle scared. Until yesterday, I had Marantz MA-500s (125w) running my Cornwalls, but because of this thread I've switched back to my Carver CM-1090 (100w/ch) integrated amp. It's a bit warmer, more tube-like - which I like (Bob Carver's reference amp was tube, and he pushed for that sound from all his amps), but its clarity isn't quite the same. - close, but not quite. Anyway, is 125 too much?
  14. Intersting... my wife and I were having this discussion just yesterday. After reading HDBRbuilder's comment about too much wattage causing tweeter damage, I decided to swap (from storage) my Marantz MA-500 monoblocks (125w/ch) for my first real amp, a Caver CM-1090 (100w/ch - has tone controls that can be bypassed). We listened to alot of music, and decided that the Carver was "warmer," while the Marantz was cleaner, which follows what Karen said, but a bit harsh.
  15. Thanks, that really helps. I now remember the tweeter that I replaced being round, but yesterday was the first day I had opened the other one.
  16. THANK YOU! I was trying to find out the xover type. It is type B. Next question - What does that mean?
  17. Have you been to Audiogon? you can usually find "good stuff used there"
  18. Agreed on ordering from Klipsch. I replaced one of my tweeters on (then) 20 year old set of Cornwalls and I can't tell which one's which. I just went to my local dealer and they ordered the part for me. - installed it myself - nothing to it. Cheers, Mark
  19. Thank for everyone's help & input (my wife's a little freaked by the way I've geeked out since I found this site) Here's a collage of some of the pictures I took today. I have better (bigger) versions if anyone wants to see them. Clockwise from top left: 1)Front shot 2)Rear Shot (the blank square as I remember had arrows pointing Up and Out indicating how the speaker could be placed. (if the speakers were laid on their side, you switched right and left) 3)close up of QC label - I can make out the Model (C-HR-15) and "Cornwall II" - I could swear I see (and remember) a hand-written date of '69 Note: My college roommate had these at school in 1990. He bought them from a (much) older student who previously was a DJ. While he had them the labels were fine, and I'm almost positive they were dated xx-xx-69. Later, in grad school, his apartment caught fire while he was out and ruined most everything. The Cornwalls were just snoke-damaged and had to be refinished, which is why I can no longer read the labels. After he married in 93, his wife deemed the speakers too big and that is how I got them. 4)PWK logo (w/top view of K-horn at bottom) 5)Original K-77M tweeter from 2K291 6)Replaced K-77??? tweeter in 2K290 (replaced about the time I purchaed them) 7)Original K-55V driver (same in both) 8)Original K-33P woofer (same in both) 9/10) closeup of network components (can anyone shed light?) 11)Entire view of crossover network 12)Full inside view of speaker. Anyway that's what she looks like Hope it helps someone and thanks again for your insight. Cheers, Mark
  20. That's pretty similar. I had forgotten they do say Cornwall II on the back. Unfortunately, they suffered smoke damage in my friend's apartment (window unit caught fire while he was out) and they were refinished, so original sticker is all but gone now. I'll post photos this evening. Thnks for the info. I'll also open them up to find out about the insides.
  21. thanks for the info. Yes, this is the layout of my speakers (if this works) / = 77, / / = 55, / ------------- ------------- /// / / /// / / / / / / / / / / / / / -- / / -- / / / \ / / / \ / / < > / / < > / / \ / / / \ / / / -- / / -- / /--- --- ---/ /--- --- ---/ ------------- ------------- There's a PWK Logo in the same corner as the tweeter that is alwasys supposed to be up and out (if you want to lay them on their side. BTW what's alnico? and 'B'?
  22. I've had my Cornwalls for quite a while and I'm trying to determine their age. I've been told 1968 by the previous owner - college roomate whose wife said they were too big. When did Klipsch stop "pairing" the speakers (i.e. one w/ tweeter/mid in upper left and one w/ tweeter/mid in upper right ? Everything I've seen has the horns mounted horizontally downn the center.
