  1. Jeff's SET monoblocks (in 2A3 form)will soon reside ninety miles from Hope, pushing Khorns,as I am certain they were destined to do.Thanks to all of the "exemplary jazz recordings" suggestions,I think the tunes will do them justice, too. Two weeks is a long wait-Thankfully,I have the Craig/Scott 299A to sooth me when I get ansy.

  2. Thanks for the listing, boomac & jtice. This is the most fun I've had going broke since I jumped-off into new equipment.I've been off the net for a few days & it's great to see all of the new info.Ditto that I'm getting an education here ,too.Besides the titles, the new sounds, read the history here. Some of you have helped shape it.Boomac,I thought we'd get a few new tingles through the tubes, but this is an awesome response to obviously loved music.

  3. toddc,

I buy hybrid SACDs-some multichanel & some stereo only-that will play on SACD & standard CD players.Yes,there is a difference in sound. No,many of the titles I want are out on SACD.It sounds fine with my 299.When I play multichanel,it is through my receiver.

  4. It took my post office 2 1/2 weeks to get my tubes to me after an ebay auction was paid for. They didn't leave an attempt to deliver notice until the second try 15 days later.Needless to say,I had questions for the seller, who had dutifully shipped the day after I paid. There was some stress, yes.

During the wait,I read a thread here about Telefunken tubes, suggesting that one not waste one's $ on them. There was some opposition to that, and some suggested the fault might lie in the condition of the tubes,or perhaps the preferences of the listener.

Simply put,I love these tubes & what I perceive to be a signifigant improvement in timbre. They are crisper in detail than the black plates Craig had in the 299A when I got it.To my ears, they accentuate the enjoyable forward characteristic of the Khorns & LaS,without being too bright. Some may prefer the warmer sound, but for my well- spent money, the Telefunken 12AX7's are appreciatively more detailed.

  5. Wow,what a great list.

I've started gleening some titles out on hybrid SACD.Many of those suggested may take years to make that list-maybe never.I'm on the lookout for a couple of dozen suggestions now, including some on cd.I'm trying not to scratch the vinyl itch.

Yes,exemplary recordings were requested,Allan.Hints about producers to be on the lookout for are a great help for some of us who only know artist or group names. This started with your question,boomac-Thanks.

  6. boomac,

Good score. You'll be blown away by the detail of the Scott.I'm using my 299A with Khorns & hearing a lot of old music new.Dark Side of the Moon is Awesome through it.Good jazz-do you like to hear the plop of a saxaphone pad?I'm impressed with it,and with Craig's work.He makes square corners even when they are hidden.I'm a news junkie, and I've been muting the 5:00 & 5:30 broadcasts to listen to music that I have heard before. You'll be looking for Heratige soon,I'll bet.

  7. fini,

Just to reconfirm, you have plenty of room for padding.Mine fit in a 1978 Suburban. If you use a tarp,be sure it doesn't flap on the speaker surface at all.I messed up a BMW motorcycle not realising how much damage a tarp could do,& it was mostly_ tied down tight.

  8. elgrillo,

Do any stores in your area have a liberal return policy-not happy, bring it back?

You haven't heard some very fine receivers in your price range-Have you considered driving to another city to listen?

What speakers are you using/going to use?

If you are happy with a group of receivers, and the price difference is not a factor, look at tuner specs or other features. Are there warranty differences?

Most of us have had to work through your concerns. My best advice is not to get in a hurry.

  9. jhawk92,

Whether or not one Fisher is as pleasing as another Scott,I cannot say.I do,however, recommend the combination of Khorns and the Scott 299A.If you wanted to change amplification in the future, the Scott should be easy to sell(I bought mine from Craig within two hours of his posting it on this Forum.)In the meantime, you would enjoy a very satisfying sound for what I think is a nominal cost.Talk to Craig.

  10. Keith,

You're right. It's not knowing that is stressful.I didn't think I had gotten stiffed, but I just didn't know. You go into this assuming the best, but communicating is what keeps you thinking that way.I'm still looking forward to the "new" tubes.

  11. I got an email today. He says he sent them USPS on the 6th.They are slow enough to think he did.I hope to be listening to Telefunken 12AX7 smooth plates tonight. With no tweeter in one Khorn,it'll be the LaS.
