I just need to stay out of thrift stores. LOL! I just dragged these home. Klipsch Quintet. Only 2 of them but that is all I need. Especially for $2 the pair! Now do I go with the ProMedias or these?

I just brought them home. I will get them set up and show off the correct mounting with Hofy's Duct Tape Mounting System.

I'm back!! Anyone miss me? I sold the famous duct tape ProMedias back in 2014. Fast forward to the other day. Found a pair of the satellite speakers for a the ProMedia at Goodwill. For $2.99 they just had to come home. I have already removed the volume pod. I think I will be setting these up on my small desk for the computer. No sub, but I will put together one of my small class D amps. Gotta be better than the sound bar I am using right now.

And they are gone. Sold on eBay for $159.99.

Well, here we are. 14 years. Longer than I ever thought I would have these speakers. They still work great, even the static in the volume control that these are infamous for. However, I have downsized and there just isnt room for these babies anymore. Look for them on that eAuction site in a few days.

I actually did start over from scratch in 2003. 1) How would you identify your allowable budget versus time? Time is irrelevant, it is the journey that makes it worth it to me. Budget, I never let stereo funds take away from the essentials. 2) Would you buy all used, all new, or a mix (including source material, audio input devices, amplifiers/processors, speakers including subs if any, cables, room treatment devices, architectural updates)? What would you buy used and what new? Used where ever possible. I picked up my KM-6 speakers (KG5.5) on ebay for $300-400. They where like new. My Marantz 2230 also off ebay last year for $129, completely rebuilt. Pioneer PD-M453 CD player new in the box for $10 at Goodwill. 3) What would you be trying to achieve - i.e., as close to a realistic performance as you could afford, or "something that sounds good to play stuff that you used to listen to when you were young". Probably the latter, it is about enjoying the music, so what ever sounds good. 4) How much would you be willing to pay for visual attractiveness instead of performance (% cost of the component)? This includes tubes and non-audio devices. Not much, function over form first. If it looks good too, bonus. 5) How much would you buy-and-sell in order to achieve your ideal system goal(s)? Would you try to minimize this? Would you buy without first hearing the equipment? What components would that be? I have always sold the old to get new. This has always been a rule of mine. I usually dont listen first anymore but I do massive amounts of research so I know what I should be getting. 6) How would you go about listening to the equipment before buying? If possible listen to the actual piece from the seller. If not there then locate someone near by that has the same model and listen to theirs if possible.

Thanks for the input, everyone! I guess a pull out shelf it is then. I will be building a cabinet myself so the shelf will be heavy duty. I have an old issue of Woodcraft with plans for this cabinet. Mine will be oak without doors.

Bill, that is all I was able to come up with too. I worry about the stability of the pull out shelf and vibration dampening.

I am looking for a cabinet or ideas to build one that is similar to what I have now (pictured below). I need something that will take a turntable. I need to be able to place the widescreen on top of the cabinet so placing the TT there is out. I also do not want to wall mount anything (TV or TT). Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

"Note that this covers a span 10 to 12 years and visting a lot of stores and a lot of luck." This is the key. I have friends who complain that they never find the good stuff like I do. Well, you have to go to the thrift stores more than once a month. I go almost daily and almost every day come away empty handed. But every so often I strike gold. BTW our local Goodwill the LPs are 99cents.

The last 2 months have been very good to me at Goodwill. All LPs are scratch free. (I must have rejected over 200 of them for scratches.)

Some updates to the system I posted above and the latest finds. First I replaced the Marantz 360 with a Marantz 2230! Got it off fleaBay for $119. Completely gone through and recapped. WOW the sound!!! Goodwill finds in the last couple of months are a Tascam CD-RW5000 For $9.99 (Studio CD burner with Balanced in/out) And for a friend I just picked up a Pioneer PD-M510 changer for $2.99 Clean and working.

consistent, This is what Craig has stressed all along. Cable should not add or take away from the signal. Your home made cable sounds very similar to the Kimber Kable PBJ. Any comments on that?

If vintage isnt your thing a couple of new integrated amps that are attracting attention are the Marantz PM 5003 that Stereophile found to be quite nice. http://us.marantz.com/Products/2564.asp and the NAD C 326BEE which has the sole of the old NAD 3020. http://nadelectronics.com/products/hifi-amplifiers/C-326BEE-Stereo-Integrated-Amplifier Both can be had for under $500.

After my divorce in '04 I sold off what little I had left for stereo equipment. (Except for my Klipsch KM-6 speakers) I survived on CDs ripped to my computer and my Grado SR-125 headphones. Last fall I was in the local Goodwill and spotted a receiver sitting on the shelf. Marantz SR-360. I plugged it in and it turned on. I figured what the heck, it's only $2.99. I got it home and hooked it up. I only got sound out of one channel. A shot of contact cleaner on the volume slider fixed that! It isnt the best sounding unit, but for the price it will do until I get something else. Over the next few months the finds started to pile up. A Sony cassette deck (TC-R303) for $4.99 and a Mitsubishi Turntable followed me home. The real find came last winter when I spotted a white box on the bottom shelf. I seen Pioneer on the side and made a bee line for it. I opened it up expecting to see some sort of beat up junk. Nope, Pioneer PD-M453 6 disc changer still in the original plastic wrap! All the paper and remote where there too. $9.99. It may have only cost me $23 for the whole system, less speakers, but I am now doing something I have not done in years, ENJOYING THE MUSIC. The $23 system. Along with the big $$ gear.

Only a couple of more weeks and I will have had the awesome Klipsch setup for 10 YEARS!! I have yet to listen to any multimedia/computer speaker that sounds as good.
