  1. I recently bought a 430 for my daughter and (mostly) son-in-law to go with the Cornwalls I also picked up for them. Sounds terrific. I also had a 730 (or 930?) given to me a number of years ago by a forum member for my next door neighbor. It also sounded (probably still sounds) terrific although they moved a few years ago. I can't give an opinion as to which sounds better since I never had the chance to hear them side-by-side but it was easy to tell they were brother and sister.

I got the 430 because the 730 sounded so good with Heritage speakers, not to mention what a bargain they are. I paid about $100 for a beautifully refurbished unit in perfect condition. I'm sure the 730 was originally purchased because Andy convinced us all way back when to give the HK's a try. He always bragged about his 430/Heresy combo!

Andy - Nobody who took your advice was disappointed!

  2. Looking forward to it, Larry. Thanks as always for putting this together.

Did they open up the boxes on the side overlooking the stage for this performance? I went onto the website and had a difficult time determining whether or not the Promenade Boxes that look to be available are what we used to reserve each year. If so, I'm sure the musicians will be thrilled to have us back!

  3. Glad to see you are still around here, Dee. It appears that many of the old regulars aren't anymore...I miss some of them!

    Andy

    I miss you too, Andy.[;)]

Many of the old-timers rarely post anymore but it's always nice to see a legend such as yourself reappear.

I do hope all is well and that your back isn't giving you too much trouble from hauling around those Heritage speakers for so many years. Also, in case you were wondering, the Zebrawood Cornwalls you built for me all those years ago are still as beautiful as the day they left the showroom floor.

Really good to hear from you again. Take care.

    - Gary

  4. Have you listened to early Beatles in stereo recently? Please, Please, Me, Beatles for Sale, With The? I just have never like all the vocals on one side and all of the instruments in the other. It was very primitive stereo at Abby Road until '69-'70 and I just never liked that sound of it. I have the mono versions on prerecorded tape and they sound so much better to my ears the the equiv. stereo tape where they channeled the instruments so differently than they did with much later on. I think stereo was pretty much a kind of gimmick at the time. I hope to hear some reviews on these whenever they are out. Travis

Rubber Soul in stereo was also vocals one side, instruments on the other although they re-mixed at least some of the songs before the "Love Songs" album was released ("Michelle" has a center vocal image on the Love Songs album). Even the MFSL LP was recorded that way. That's one of the three or so I'd be interested in buying assuming they changed the mix.

  5. So no since getting the vinyl if you already have the box set that came out a couple of years ago with the mono set? They are from the same digital master? Seems like it is just a collectable type thing as opposed to improvement on what had come before. Seems like the MFSL Beatles set is still the best way to go on this for Analog or the prerecorded reel to reel. Travis?

I sure hope you're right Travis. I have all but 2 of the MFSLs and those are early LPs that don't get much benefit from the higher quality vinyl IMO. There are 2 or 3 I might buy if everyone decides they blow away the MFSLs.

    Looking forward to your reviews!

  6. The "U" in the serial # indicates 1980. CBR stand for Cornwall Birch Raw.

So, that means you own a pair of 1980 Cornwall 1s with a raw birch plywood finish. Without pictures, there's no way to know if the original owner added a finish to them which happens quite often. Edit: Just noticed the soft vinyl stapled to the speakers comment. Ouch....

BTW - The serial # should also be stamped in the wood on the back of each speaker. That way you'll know if yours have consecutive serial #s which is important to some people, particularly when matching unique grain patterns.

  7. really difficult at that price point... (p5 here). I would probably go with the denon for the time being until you can spend more.do you have a pre amp or are you going to need to use a high output unit?

I believe Shu meant to ask if you have a step-up transformer on your phono stage. Without one, you'll need a high output cart which usually means a moving magnet, ruling out the Denon 103.

  8. Tried it with this song 8 years ago to mixed results.

It's a silly , but fun little thing. Simply add a line or two of the lyrics then pass it along until the song is done.

    I'll get it started:

"A long, long time ago . . . I can still remember how that music . . . used to make me smile.

And I knew if I had my chance . . . that I could make those people dance . . . and maybe they'd be happy for a while.

    But....

February made me shiver With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
    **The day the music died**
    So

    bye bye Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinking whiskey and rye, singing...

this will be the day that I die, this will be the day that I die.

    {instrumental}

Did you write the book of love and do you have faith in God above, if the bible tells you so.....

And do you believe in rock n' roll can music save your mortal soul and can you teach me how to dance real slow..........

  9. There seem to be 2 opinions here. Mine (the right one [;)]), and those who think it's all in the source material. Do you really think the OP has no good source material in his collection? Come on. The bottom line is you need a different amp for 2-channel. Period. Come to my house and I'll demonstrate. Bring ANY source material you like. I'll even play my "Mallete CD" for you.

Are there any HT receivers that sound good for 2-channel listening? One that can top my Scott 299b or my VRDs/BBX combo for example? Maybe, but I've never heard one.

  10. I guess I didn't state that very clearly.

My point was I didn't think the OP was experiencing a "good vs poor quality recording" issue. My point was that my experience tells me many HT recievers don't do a very good job with 2-channel music and trying a different reciever without spending a lot of money would be the best bang for the buck solution.

I apologize for my unclear post. Now back to our regularly scheduled program.......[:)]

  11. Sorry Mr. Mallette but I must disagree with you (doesn't happen very often).

I went through something similar. I have a acoustically terrific room with Cornwalls and tried to "upgrade" my 1976 Kenwood receiver with a new HT reciever (this is back in 2001). To my shock and horror, the 2-channel mode on my new Sony ES was horrible at best. I eventually ended up using a Scott 299b for 2-channel with a switchbox to go between HT and 2-channel on my Cornwalls.

My suggestion would be to find an old HK430 or some other nice 70s era receiver and use a Niles switchbox so your mains can be used with either reciever at the push of a button. It'll cost you about $200 total and you'll flip out when you hear the difference.

  12. They look to be Walnut Lacquered (WL) from '87. Very nice.

CII = Cornwall II, WL = Walnut Lacquered

Pricing is tough to guess anymore. I'd say you could get a grand for these in such nice condition but you never know. Ebay could bring you more if you're lucky but then you have to deal with Ebay.

Good luck. Find a local buyer or someone willing to make a trip. Those are definitely too nice to ship.

Differences between the 1s and 2s....

1s are rear mounted, 2s are front mounted and the inside is accessed by removing the woofer. The 1s have removable back panel.

Also, they changed the drivers and crossovers. Do some forum searches for specifics.

  13. The whole creepy thing reminds me of a transaction that I did years ago. I was selling a rare set of speakers and kept getting spam emais from someone in Asia. I ignored them and then one email made it to my inbox and it said "Why do you keep ignoring me, I want to buy your speakers and I am willing to pay full price."

I spoke to the guy and he was a real person, although not that fluent in English. He wanted me to ship the speakers to his agent in San Francisco where they were loading up a crate to ship to Taiwan.

    Hmmmmmm.

Is this guy a prince from Nigeria? Dunno.

I am not really interested, what, he will send cash ahead of time? Hmmmmm. He will arrange for a shipper to gcome pick them up, I just need to pack them. Hmmmmmm.

He really knew his speakers too. Bad english, but definately an Asian guy.

I look into this with my bank. I ask the teller, "If I receive a wire, is there any risk that it can be fake or reversed? How long do we need to wait until we know it is real."

This girl was brilliant. She looks up a few things on her computer and then says, "There is nothing to worry about. Go ahead with the transaction as sooon as the wire is sent."

Hmmmm. Why do you feel so sure about this.

Her reply, "Well if the wire is bad, we can just seize the funds from your account, so it is safe."

I must look like a really nice guy, me being so concerned about the bank and all.

Anyway, I did get it straightened out and I spoke to the Guy's agent, who did exist. He sent cash ahead of time and it cleared, and arranged for a prepaid freighter to come to my house with a lift gate.

Everything went very smoothly and the speakers, which were shipped ot me from Maui a few years prior, made it to Taiwan.

Generally, I never deal with suspicious people. But sometimes these things do work out.

Same exact thing happened to me. About 8 years ago I ebay'd my Marantz 7C. I advertised that I would not ship overseas but still, all my big bidders were in Asia and it ended up selling to a guy in Taiwan for about $3500. He immediately paypal'd me and had me ship to his buddy in Milwaukee. Couldn't have worked out more smoothly. Once Milwaukee put it on a plane to Taiwan, Taiwan had no recourse other than negative feedback.
