On that last picture, why is there a square hole in the bottom of your new box. Shouldn't there just be a top hole for the bottom of the bass bin and two ports. by the way, are you gonna put port tubes in thoase?

The pictures are of the lascala upside down, when the work is done I'll flip them over. Need hole against the bass bin for obvious reasons, need the other opening to screw the addition to the bass bin and to work on the tubes. Will be adjusting them to their final length. Randy

  2. The addition will be sealed both to the bottom of the bass bin and then the original bass bin cover will be installed to the bottom of the addition. Yes they get two 4 inch ports, I'll start them out at 10 inches long and work from there. I have the port tubes but ordered the wrong ones, I wanted the flared ones but got the straight ones, will be ordering the others soon. Until then I'll work with these. I believe the only difference would be in a decrease in port noise. Randy

Another vote for replacing the motor run caps. I've done it on three sets of heratige speakers with uniformly great results. You can get caps at Alliedelec.com I like the ASC the best because they are 5% high grade units. Depending on what you choose for caps the raw cost is $25 - $50 for a PAIR of AA networks. I still want to hear an A/B test of Hoveland Music caps versus laboratory grade....

ASC? Yaffman, what does this mean?

  4. These are the modified AA's. I know I should replace the old cans, they are probably out of spec's. Any suggestions? Thanks for letting me bore you.Randy

Edit: djk, do you have any recommendations on changing the AA crossover for this mod?

Either one gives you the same change.

I don't own LS. Dennis has made plenty of the mods, and I believe he has done both kinds (underneath box and enclosed top). I won't put words into his mouth.

If I were to build a set of LS clones, I would at least make the provision for the enclosed top as I was building them.

Hey Marvel, glad you kicked in! I don't understand the where or whyfor but am trying it anyway. Haven't had any bad info yet from the forum and it is all reversable. Randy

  6. Yaff, it is supposed to allow the speaker to go lower without losing the qualities of the lascala. Yes, the bottom is open and the ports go to the front. I read about this mod here on the forum. If you do a search you should be able to find some really good info on this mod. It can also be done just using the open area where the squawker and tweeter are. I am trying the bottom version because I think I'd like the upper horns at a higher level more like their cousin, the K-horn.

Craig, I know! I've had the wood cut out for better than six months. Golf season is almost here so I have to get going on these or they'll be waiting for another six months.

    Randy Taylor,,,,,the Cincinnati one.

  7. Here goes, finally got off my keister and put these together to try out the mods that help the lascala go a little deeper. Please don't make fun of the woodwork, these are testbed quality!2.gif When I find the right combo then I'll make some nice bottoms. Can't wait, Randy

And one from the top. Pretty nice grain for birch but a small scratch on this one. Again, the other speaker is near perfect with no scratches, dings, or marks like the one shown.

    David, nice!
