  1. I wish I had thought this all out and been a member of this forum before getting rid of the hand built khorns I had. The room they were in was too narrow and the listening distance too far away.

Using false walls or turning the top end out would probably have solved the problem. Never to old to learn something. :)

  2. Yes and the woman who burned her leg with hot coffee while driving deserved 8 million dollars. Damn, I should have about a billion dollars in the bank by now. Joe, you are talking sense, the rest? Sorry, while we watch our constitution go bye bye we tolerate this also. Rant over.

EDIT: And what about the lawsuits against the fast food places? When did they ever tell us it was health food and we should eat too much and then sit in front of the TV until our brains were mush? Rant over, part II

Well this is the last picture thank god, I never knew I took this many. Here is a picture of the mach ones with their new refoamed woofers. Not bad for my first refoam job.

OH HOW DO THEY SOUND,I HOOKED THEM UP TO MY SANSUI 8080 AND THEY SOUND DANG GOOD, LOTS OF BASS. I am really happy with the refoam job and cost about 35 bucks for the kit which did both speakers. So dont throw those old classic woofers away just refoam them. Hope this might be helpfull for any one that might be interested in refoaming thier speakers.

Nice looking job arf, must have taken alot of patience. Where did you order your replacement foam from? Randy

  4. Oh what the heck, really are you all serious? You bought NOS tubes at a price that can't be beat, guaranteed and you are pissed off. Try to reason it out. Have you ever cleaned and checked out a tube on a tester? No is the answer I'll bet. It would take more time than 5 dollars would buy. For craps sake it would be a money loser. What do you get paid for an hours work? Not just your hourly but with all of the benefits and all. If you are a construction worker probably about 45 dollars. White collare even more. I'm thinking 1/2 hour minimum to check and clean your tube. 25 dollars added to your 5 dollar tube. Get real. Sorry, can't bare to hear grown men cry.

Whew, just kidding fellows.LOL Yeah, I wouldn't buy anything from Ned. Heck I bet he just bought a gallon of gas on all the money he ripped off you on that tube deal. SUCKA!9.gif3.gif2.gif1.gif

By the way, Caig Deoxit would be good on the pins after cleaning. Anything you use to get the oxidation off will take off the markings on the tubes so be carefull. The green or white scuff pads will work without chemicals to get the scrungees off before the caig.

Just kidding up above but maybe you should think about what you're saying before dogging someone.

    fini,

I think it is done with a precision hygrometer.

Is an amp's damping factor measured with a scope? I know, sounds like a dumb question...

Clipped, when and where do you use a hygrometer, not a hand held surely?

The 0 dB level is a THX certification standard. At 0 dB your system should be at the dB level experienced in a movie theater or what the sound engineers intended when it was mixed.

Your system should be capable of playing at 0 dB. If not something is not up to spec. It is loud, but so is a movie theater.

The 1/2 mark is just a coincidence.

    ----------------

White_shadow, the 0 db level on a pair of speakerws that are rated at 88db @ 1 watt at 1 meter is not going to be the same as with a speaker capable of 104db @ 1 watt at 1 meter. The difference might cause hearing damage.

Not knowing the speakers that were used to get this (standard) movie experience I'd ignore all of the pretty numbers and set the gain control to a comfortable level and enjoy. Happy listening.

Edited white_shadows name, I had it wrong.

When I was in junior high, I strapped the speaker from a transistor radio to the mouthpiece of my Sousaphone. Perhaps I was ahead of my time...

LOL, thanks Bob,as I wipe the tears from my face

  8. Hey Joe,

Good luck on your rebuild. Have had a few bikes over the years myself but am currently without. 1952 EL, 196? Tiger, 196? Triumph 500, 1968 Bonneville,67 Bonneville,1974 BMW R-60, 1977 Sportster(biggest pc of poop owned)1971 Honda 750,various dirt bikes and my favorite a stock 1957 74,black and white full dresser. Sold it to feed my three kids back around 1977.

Used a Counterpoint 7.0 tube preamp and a Hafler 220 solid state amp for years and both gave good service and sounded great to me. The solid state amp would be generally easier on upkeep compared to a tubed. Not always but it has been so for me. I don't mind the sometime aggravation of owning old gear but can easily see how one could be turned off by the problems that occur. It seems that the preamps stay together better, I believe because of less stress on the components.

    Enjoy,,Randy

    Randy, Your Marks look marvelous!

I couldn't make up my mind which boards to get for my Mark III project. Finally I decided to go with Tubesforhifi.com boards mainly for the individual bias adjustments. I'm just going to K-ball the trannies and build new chassis for them.

Craig, Do you remember if you upped the coupling cap values?

    Rick

    ----------------

Rick, thanks for the complement. My welding buddy at work filled in the corners and some holes that weren't stock. Took them down to a chomeplater and had them done. $175.00 I didn't think that was too bad.

Have the individual bias controls installed as well. Haven't tried them in triode mode yet but probably wil soon. Wonder how the KT-90's would sound on this thing?? Craig would the bias have to be changed from the 6550's?

  10. Your popping may have done in the midrange driver. Hopefully not. Don't know the speakers you have. If they are in warranty you're in luck, if not open them up and see if the connections inside are in good shape. If they are I don't know anything else to check. Maybe someone else here can help. If not it is off to the dealer.14.gif

Hey where the heck are all the VRD owners around here ??? Oh they're systems sound so good they don't waste time here no more

Have you no shame Craig?2.gif Craig helped me install the Triode mod in my MK-II's over the phone. As with Gary's the only parts left stock are the transformers and sheet metal, pic in next post. Alot of patience with no benefit to himself. Thanks again Craig.

Switch them in and out with some MC-60's. I can't decide which I like best. The MK'II's are cleaner sounding but the Mac has more warmth. OH the pain. (DR. Taylor in Lost in Space)EDIT:DR.Smith, duh

Hope to get together with some of the members here one of these days and listen to some different gear. The VFD's come to mind. Who wants to get together around Cincinnati? I can host a small get together.

    Randy

  12. I know I could having mono blocks but have no idea on your stuff. There might be a problem with the 90's being more efficient and sounding better just because they are louder, I've heard it is a sales trick. Any body else here know.

Just off the top of my head if you have a way to bias all the output tubes I don't see how it would hurt the amp. If you have a way to to balance out the output it would be kool to try. Randy
