KLF-20 finish

Recommended Posts

Hello, I asked a similar question about some newly acquired kg-4.2s.

I just acquired a set of KLF-20s in medium oak, is this a lacquer finish similar to the kgs.

The cabs are in decent shape but will need some scratches & a small water stain removed.

Should I remove the lacquer before attempting any repair?

Thanks guys.

Unfortunately, you will need to remove the lacquer. You will need to remove the drivers and crossovers. Use a good quality random orbital sander and 400 grit pads. be very careful as you sand and change pads often. The lacquer will come up as a white, flour like dust. Wipe down with lacquer thinner after a "pad", and let dry; it will soften and "lift" the lacquer. When the lacquer is gone, the color of the dust will change... When you think it's gone, the oak will be a "pinkish" color and if you wipe the panel off with a damp rag, it will look "flat" or matte. If it's glossy, or shiny, you have some lacquer left. Be very careful and unless you have experience, start with the bottoms first to get the hang of it. The final thing is to wipe them down with lacquer thinner, let dry, and then wipe them with mineral spirits. The water stain(s) may be just in/under in the lacquer; if not, try some oxalic acid mix, or some baking soda on a damp rag. Wipe and let dry. You can also wipe down with water and place a clean cotton t-shirt over the stain; then iron it; set the iron to "cotton", be careful as if you make it too hot it can release the veneer glue and lift or bubble the veneer.

When finished, a very light 600 grit will prep it for a stain, or you can oil them. You can have them re-sprayed with lacquer, but it will likely be expensive as lacquer is being phased out of many "cabinet shops" due to environmental considerations. A good semi-gloss polyurethane will also look very nice if properly applied.
