Advice on replacing veneer on Klipsch speaker.

I have been looking for a decent priced Cherry wood center for over a year. Decided to just buy a black one and either deal with it or veneer it. I am a wood worker but never tried to remove veneer. I would just go over the old but the extra thickness will not look right against the face plate of the speaker. Just curious how someone else has approached this? I suspect they used contact adhesive as I would which is nearly impossible to remove without damaging MDF or particle. I don't see my self trying to plane the veneer off though I do have a handy hand held planer that might do the trick...
