Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Media_Audio If you are trying to keep quality, depending on your source, try not to do conversion and use a compressed format like FLAC but is lossless. If you want better quality but have size concerns, use higher bitrate lossy formats. Your ears and equipment quality will make you the judge of what is acceptable.
