THX Ultra2 Speaker question

Rageed

Recommended Posts

I am looking to buy the THX-Ultra2 system. I have a large screen with mesh panels built into the cabinets to the right, left and above the screen. There is plenty of room on the left and right of the screen to fit the KL-650s. The spec calls for using the KL-650 as the center speaker as well. I do not have room to fit the KL-650 in the mesh covered cabinet above the screen. My question is, could I use the RC-62II center speaker. I believe Klipsch recommends only using THX Ultra2 speakers and not mixing others. Will this hurt home theater sound quality? If so, could I use the KL-7800-THX for the center? I would need to build an enclosure for it but it would fit. Any help would be appreciated.

I look at it this way... Your center channel is so important, that you might argue that the entire system is only as good as the center. That being said, you'd be holding back the potential so much to match with an RC62, that it would be criminal ! Aside from that, the tonal match is really not all that close. I've not heard the 7800, but doubt it can run with the KL650's. It would, however, be a tonal match.

Can you fit a KL525? That would be my pick over the 7800.

Is there no modification to the cabinet that would allow for a 650? It really is THAT important.

Do you happen know the distance between the top of the horn tweeter to the bottom of front firing port on the KL-650? I could remove a wood panel below the screen and put mesh over it. I believe the speaker will fit in there. The problem is, the opening (where the mesh would be) would only be 12" high. The total speaker height is 15". if there is 1 1/2" of non sound producing space on the top and bottom of the speaker, this could work. Again, thanks for any help.

I agree!! I would never consider mixing the THX series with others, my LRD has a room setup with this system and it most certainly rocks!!!

Rageed, sorry, I don't have mine anymore. Can't measure for you. I'm almost certain that there is at least 2" at the top and an inch at the bottom of "non sound producing" cabinet. :) The ports are designed to be at the bottom, but there are no ill effects from placing the cabinet upside down. I had mine that way because of a lip on the perimeter of my stands.

I've done a few inventive modifications to fit speakers. My columns on my side wall have holes drilled through them where the ports are for my RS62's. The column is then covered in fabric and you don't see any of it.

Any "monkey business" I've done is completely worth it for not compromising performance. Sounds like you can find a solution there somehow.
