Musical Sub for RF-5's?/System Eval.

Hello Friends,

I'm interested in a sub to complement my RF-5's. I've heard the RSW15's and 12's and they're somewhat out of my range of around $500, as I'm trying to conserve the finances for a Pre-Amp/Amp upgrade as well.

My system is used mainly (85%) for 2-Channel with occasional DVD-A's and movies. My listening preferences are mostly Jazz, Classical and some Rock.

I'm hoping to find a sub to sort of fill in some of the depth on acoustic bass, etc., but I don't need to shake the house apart - I've probably never had the volume knob up much past 45% thanks to the incredible effiency of these speaks. The room dimensions are 18x12' with mostly "hard" surfaces.

My current set-up tends to sound somewhat bright and analytical, but has vastly improved since upgrading the cables.

I've read many reviews in countless publications and websites but anticipate that I'll get much better info from those of you that have already been down this road with these, or similar speakers.

Also looking to move to a Rotel set-up of RSP976 or 1066 pre-amp, and 2-Ch Amp (Model TBD). Any insight here would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Pete

If you've got a spare amp hanging around, you could try this:

Or here's one new, quite a bit smaller, but still a strong performer:

These are very well liked by most folks on this board, although the WAF is not always high.

Thanks Doug. The SVS's are pretty sweet, but unfortunately, I do have a major WAF issue.

(She keeps threatening to stuff my entire system, speakers and all, into a cabinet!....the horror).

Gotta go with something she won't notice...right away.

Well, if you're open to used, you might keep an eye out on Ebay or Audiogon for a used Velodyne servo sub. I briefly had a 1500R - a 100lb beast of a unit that I picked up on Ebay for about $600 shipped (but UPS beat it up so I gave it back to them in exchange for $600). You might find a 12" that won't be as big, but is quite musical with almost 0 distortion, due to the servo design...

Thanks again Doug!

This is exactly the type of info I was hoping for.

Would the 12" Velodyne be the "F-1200"?

I see a few available such as this:

Yes, that's it. The 15" has a bigger amp, but looks just like this one. Also, mine had a remote (hence the 1500R) to turn it on and off and also adjust the volume.

I noted, though, that it does not have an auto power-off on it.

There is some very limited info on the Velodyne web site, under previous products.
