How does this Polk tweeter work?

I was kruz'in on Crutchfield's web site and was looking at some of the Polk gear (I know, shame on me...)

Anyway, they had a detailed picture of the tweeter, it looks funky, how does it work, and why is it the way it is? Picture below.

Ken---That tweeter is a Vifa, you can buy them at Parts Express. It's what JBL calls a ring radiator. The diaphragm is a ring suspended at it's middle and it's edge. The voice-coil is probably under the pleat between the 2 rolls. The little phase-plug in the middle prevents interference from the same frequency radiating from opposite sides of the ring. Pretty simple and a very old idea, dates back at least to the JBL 075 "bullet" horn tweeter introduced in the 50s. The JBL slots, buttcheeks and catseyes are ring-radiators too.

WOW!!!

Thats some nice stuff for Polk!!! $60 to get the equivalent!

But I thought there was a circular diagraph in a speaker, like a horn driver? What soes the driver itself look like?

Ken---In this case the diaphragm is ring shaped. Look at the attatchment. The area I've lightened is the diaphragm and moves. The nipple in the middle is the phase-plug, it remains stationary. The voicecoil is under the pleat in the center of the ring, I've highlighted it.

OK, thanks!

I didn't know a diagrapg could have a hole in it.

This Vifa tweeter is also used by a few high quality speakers.Krell also uses these Vifa tweeters.

Small pic but the LAT1 and the other Krell LAT series speakers also use this HF driver.

Polk Audio latest series all sound quite good,I am quite impressed for all the performance the LSi series bring.

Oh and here is the clear view of the whole tweeter

The other three most popular, and best tweeters are Dynaudio Esotar,Scan Speak Revelator and Focal Audiom.

The Esotar is often used if price no object reference speakers(Rockport,CAT,Cello,Egglestonworks,WEGG and many others).
