Greek
What is the difference between dolby surround and 5.1 surround formats? Which format is ideal to listen to?
boa12
5.1 is a basic format meaning 6 discrete channels - 5 speaker channels & the .1 channel for low frequency effects (lfe) w/ a sub. before dolby digital 5.1, dolby put out dolby surround, which was more for use w/ prologic decoding. dolby surround is basically only two discrete channels which also provides for a blended (mono) center channel & a blended (mono) surround channel that is not full frequency range & has some delay to surround speakers. dolby digital 5.1 should be the superior sounding format, especially if you have 5 speakers & a sub. there are two companies that put out their 5.1 formats for home. check out www.dolby.com & www.dtsonline.com i prefer dts when its available on the disks. to do dts though you also have to have a dts compatiable dvd player & a dts decoder in your dvd player or receiver. ------------------ My Home Systems Page This message has been edited by boa12 on 09-02-2002 at 03:08 PM
