easylistener
I was in the avs forum and came across this statement from a man that test eq. I thought some of you guys would like this Tom_Bombadil wrote from AVS Forum Since we do have a lot of benchtest measurements, there are patterns by manufacturer. For example take Sony - their ES line tends to meet specs, but their lower-end lines do not, sometimes coming in at only 1/3 of spec. OTOH, Harman-Kardon & NAD nearly always meet spec. Onkyo's lower end stuff usually falls short by up to 50%. Denon is consistently around 75% of spec (except their 4802 exceeds spec).
damonrpayne
There should be some form of ISO standards or some independent party that "certifies" the ratings. Otherwise its like sports cars: my car is rated for 227 HP but only 160 or so actually make it to the wheels
Trooper
The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) has oversight on power ratings. They don't really go looking for problems/cheaters though. Basically, someone has to file a complaint about a manufacturer in order for them to investigate. There is a rule for how power amp ratings are supposed to be measured and a required format for how the power ratings are presented to the customer. Very few companies follow the rules correctly - even if their power numbers are legit they may not present the specs "by the book".
