Any special science behind these diffusers?

In one of the listening rooms at Indianapolis they have a Skyline on the ceiling, in the middle.

It is a high ceiling. Otherwise it would be like stalactites in a cave. (sp?)

I've seen the slot type described in some technical publications. RPG is a general description and a search should show up something.

My understanding is that the goal is to set up a reflector in the form of a diffraction grating, However, the almost random heights ensure that the reflection angles are almost random. (Not said well.) At any given frequency, the sound is scattered.

If I do some room treatment, it will be in the form of polycylinders. They are more simple to build and may accomplish the same thing.
