boa12
ok i think i've finally figured out how to use the marantz bass management & a sub hooked only to the sub out line level for the best sound on all sources. & it probably applies to most other ht receivers as most have direct or purist mode & the controls seem to work pretty similarly. * for the speaker settings: front-small, center-small, rear large(well because they're cornwalls), sub:yes * for 5.1 sources (or any source that has the LFE channel), i use the source direct mode. * for any source that doesn't have the LFE channel such as pcm or analog stereo, i use the other desired modes. f.e., 5 channel stereo for a music cd. this works for me because the direct mode bypasses the bass management. so w/ the flick of a single switch on the remote, for 5.1 sources it plays all 5 channels at full frequency range as the mixers meant it to be. & of course all lfe then goes to the sub. on the sub, i have the crossover switched out, bypassed. if a sub doesn't have this switch, one could just turn the cross all the way up to like 120hz. for a source like a music cd or cable movie w/ no LFE channel, i switch the mode w/ the remote to 5 channel stereo or auto respectively. this kicks in my preset speaker settings(fronts-small, etc.) i.e., the receiver bass mgmt, back in so that the receiver handles the front & center crossover to the sub out & i don't get that nasty klf-30/sub overlap - standing waves & muddy bass - especially w/ music. now i know everybody has different receivers, bass management, subs, etc. but my marantz has an unbelievably high 100hz cut-off to sub & it still sounds great. i feared that using direct & not using a dsp mode like dts-cinema would hurt the movie track's sound quality. not at all to my ears. it in fact frees it from the receiver bass mgmt settings that work better for the other material. a downside to direct mode is that it also bypasses any tone/equalizer settings. but I don't ever use those myself. please do not hesitate to question/rebute any of the above (as always). ------------------ Klipsch KLF 30 (front), KLF C-7, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub woofer Monsterbass 400 sub interconnects & Monster CX-2 biwire & Z-12 cable Marantz SR-8000 receiver Sony DVP-C650D cd/dvd player Sony Trinitron 27" stereo tv Toshiba hi-fi stereo vcr Technics dual cassette deck Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box Boa's Listenin Lounge: Klipsch RF-3 (front), RC-3, cheap little Technics (rear) Monster MCX Biwires Sony STR-DE935 a/v receiver Kenwood KR-9600 AM/FM stereo receiver (vintage 1975) Russound AB-2 receiver switch to RF-3 Teac PD-D1200 5-disk cd changer Technics direct drive turntable Sega Genesis game player Sub: None yet rock on! boa12
i've also found setting the sub's phase to 180 also helps eliminate some of the bass cancelation between the klf-30 & the velodyne sub, though still not enough to set the klf fronts to large. gives bass that harder edge, less mudiness. anybody else get that result? ------------------ Klipsch KLF 30 (front), KLF C-7, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub woofer Monsterbass 400 sub interconnects & Monster CX-2 biwire & Z-12 cable Marantz SR-8000 receiver Sony DVP-C650D cd/dvd player Sony Trinitron 27" stereo tv Toshiba hi-fi stereo vcr Technics dual cassette deck Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box Boa's Listenin Lounge: Klipsch RF-3 (front), RC-3, cheap little Technics (rear) Monster MCX Biwires Sony STR-DE935 a/v receiver Kenwood KR-9600 AM/FM stereo receiver (vintage 1975) Russound AB-2 receiver switch to RF-3 Teac PD-D1200 5-disk cd changer Technics direct drive turntable Sega Genesis game player Sub: None yet rock on! JJT
boa12, the above setup still working out for you? If it is, glad to hear you cracked that nut. Joe T
boa12
jtt, wellll yes & no. i know i've ranted & raved about this enough. really just wanted to contribute about that direct mode. it does play the sub on 5.1 sources & sounds pretty good & clean for that for me. though it does bypass the bass management, tone controls, & delays which may be good for some material for some people like even me. & if i play an analog cd it's a good mode to listen to just the klf-30s. i'm still waiting on the vel 18" sub to get back from the shop. but for 5 channel stereo mode music listening, i just had to go back to the fronts large to get that bass back from the klf-30. & it actually sounds pretty damn good as long as i adjust the loaner vel 12" sub right (still have the crossover out on that too). just afraid w/ the bigger vel going up to 100hz for music i'll get that muddy bass back. maybe if i just back off it's output some...i'll see & report back. i've found this is something i myself the anal listener must somehow resolve ------------------ Klipsch KLF 30 (front), KLF C-7, Cornwall I (rear) Velodyne HGS-18 sub woofer Monsterbass 400 sub interconnects & Monster CX-2 biwire & Z-12 cable Marantz SR-8000 receiver Sony DVP-C650D cd/dvd player Sony Trinitron 27" stereo tv Toshiba hi-fi stereo vcr Technics dual cassette deck Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2000 digital cable box Boa's Listenin Lounge: Klipsch RF-3 (front), RC-3, cheap little Technics (rear) Monster MCX Biwires Sony STR-DE935 a/v receiver Kenwood KR-9600 AM/FM stereo receiver (vintage 1975) Russound AB-2 receiver switch to RF-3 Teac PD-D1200 5-disk cd changer Technics SL-1950 turntable/AT LS500 cartridge Sega Genesis game player Sub: None yet rock on!
