OH NO! SB-1 Troubles

afraid

Recommended Posts

Just when i got my sub this had to happen. During titan ae when corso says "were goin in" during the ice scene. There is a heavy bass sound as the ship flys by. I have my SB-1's set to small, everything under 90HZ goes to the sub. I heard something i had not before, my speakers were flapping out! Sounds bad, very bad. For those with yamaha receivers my volume was set to my usual listening level, 20 , almost to the half point of the dial. With the hz being cut off at 90 how the hell can it do this? Could my receiver be screwd up and still sending full signal to the SB's? Are my SB's blown? I dont have the problem with my center speaker. If the problem is the speaker, i have a pair of them for sale. I paid 280 for them NOT TO GET THIS SOUND. If i wanted it i would have kept my sonys.

Should i just suck it up and buy a bigger pair of mains? Maybe a pair of SF's? Damn the luck.

The sub sounds fine. I have all bass sent to sub, mains to small. All speakers are set to small so everything under 90HZ gets sent to sub. The bass settings are 0 for dd and dts. Tone control for bass is also set to 0

yea as u said. wondered if u had some other bass mgmt controls - like one that still directs low bass to both fronts & sub like denon. maybe a yammy owner can help. get the marantz sr7000/8000 & i can help more there Biggrin.gif

i agree it shouldn't do that w/ your settings. maybe just an overload of 100hz on that soundtrack. may have to turn it down on that 1. still curious if it's isolated to just that movie.

Yes Yamaha (at least mine) has the bass management mentioned above. You can set the LFE to

1. Subwoofer,

2. Main,

or

3. Both

I have my fronts (RF-3) set to large, my center (RC-3) to small and my rears (Synergy rears) to small. The LFE are sent to the sub.

I have a low model Sony sub. I have never experienced anything like afraid described.

Wow what a fast reply!! Afraid what do you have your bass and trebble set at. It sounds like you mains are haveing trouble with too much bass.

Try setting them to large and see what happens. Also send the LFE to the subwoofer. In the past I set all my speakers to large and set the bass management to both.

With my current settings there is a huge difference.

I have it set to SW not both or main. I decided to turn down the bass on the tone control to -5. I will see in the morning if that resolves the problem. Like you said maybe its just to much 100hz for that little speaker to handle. I listened to Superman with the bas tone turned down and i could not hear any difference in the way my HT sounded. Its a cheaper fix than buying a new set of speakers.Wil try Titan AE in the morning (when i can crank it)

The SB-1s cannot handle the large setting. Too much bass. I have always had them on small, even when i did not have a sub. The problem is there doing the flapping woofer thing on the small setting with bass sent to sub only. Freaking me out. I do listen loud, but have never had this problem with them before. I have only noticed it on the Titan AE DTS, just yesterday.

I think it is an isolated incident and don't worry about. Maybe it is just the DVD. Maybe something wrong with it.
