I'm on the verge of something rather clever - I think...

My PC came with Nero burning software V5.5 and a DVD recorder. V5.5 doesnt do DVD so I have downloaded the complete suite of V6.

V6 has a whole host of toys including a WAV file editor / recorder. This editor, as opposed to all others I have come across - records at up to 96 Khz / 24 bit quality.

In theory:

1. I can record direct from vinyl via the soundcard to 96 KHz 24 bit WAV files.

2. I can use the DVD creation software to make a slide show of a single slide (or a slide of each album cover) and import the hi res wav file for the background music.

3. I can then export the music using the AC3 option (as opposed to LPCM at 48 KHz).

Hopefully the AC3 will retain the audio at the 96 KHz/24 bit quality (the manual doesnt say anything about it).

I think that this will result in about the best possible quality of recording you can do at home - with standard stuff. What difference it will have over standard red book CD (or difference in quality from DVD-A) I have no idea.

I will pick an album I have in both formats and then report back with findings.

If time permits I'll also rip a CD version for further comparison.

I wonder if I can palm my daughter off on the wife's mother for the weekend?
