Anyone have any experiance with a 852 CRT Runco ?

Got a buddy in vancouver that's offering me one at a fantastic price compared to what they sold for in the late 90's .

Thinking very hard about buying this unit plus a external doubler and a 8' screen for my new 24'x 20' theater room.

Any thoughts ?

Hi

The 852 was a decent projector back in the early 90's. Today its a little dated but can give you an extremely nice picture if set up properly. If you have never installed and calibrated a front crt projector you had better hire a pro to set it up for you. The learning curve is way to steep for a newbie to do it and if you try you could damage the projector or yourself in the process. There is very high voltage present at the power supply and the crt's and you need to work very close to them when calibrating. Figure about $1500 to $1800 for install and ISF calibration. It has 7 Liquid cooled crts These are spec'd out to about 10,000 hours if you keep the contrast low. You need to check for crt burn in before you buy it. This can be done by shining a flash light in each crt and checking for a burn in logo or what ever. Also if the hours are high forget it crt replacement would be too expensive. Also, if you plan on hanging it from the ceiling you should box in your ceiling joyces for extra support and add a capture cable on the mount just in case it dislodges from the ceiling. You would not want this to hit you in the head. If you have good light control

use a good external video processor and smaller screen. You can obtain a nice image with this projector. BUT IT MUST BE SET UP AND CALIBRATED CORRECTLY. There are two more things you need to keep in mind. First, figure the TD (Throw distance) and DD (Drop distance) for the size screen you plan on using to see if you room can accommodate this projectors TD and DD for the size screen you plan on using. Then, after the projector is installed in its level neutral position, the screen can be installed accordingly.

Hope this helps
