sfogg
Which type of servo sub do you mean? There is servo controlled (the far more common type) which means there is basically a feedback loop from the motion of the subs cone to its amp section which attempts to lower distortion. There is also servo driven which is very rare. In this setup there is actually a rotary (servo) motor that drives the cones of the sub through a combination of belts. TheEAR
Servo subs like the Velodyne HGS/DD and Paradigm Servo15/Signature subs monitor the movement of the cone(voice coil)a few 1000 times/second and adjust so the cone travel is in line with the signal sent. When applied properly servo subs have much lower distortion and are more accurate. But there is a price to pay,you lower the max output a good deal.Plenty of amp power is "wasted" on this servo aided control. Look at the HGS/DD series,1250W RMS of am power and the Signature Paradigm uses a 1200W RMS amp. They have less output as identical sized classic design, powered by several times less amp muscle. However the quality of the output is well worth the effort. My HGS18 is a clean as it gets, its distortion figures down low are exemplary. And its output still very good. But the price takes a kick. fabulousfrankie
TheEar summed it up well. There are other ways to get similar performance with traditional subwoofers, but they usually come with a significantly larger enclosure.
