active/passive pre-ampwith a beard

I read the postings of 'how to make a passive pre-amp' and looked at my pre-amp and remembered that my Beard CA 506 can be switched to passive or active at the front and the back and has separate volume wheels for active and passive.(6.gif ). I also realised that I haven't got a clue what the .... ( not the F-word 2.gif) those switches and knobs are for. I listen to my Grado RS1 and amp over tape-out and over my speakers (no not Klipsch yet 7.gif , but I'm working on that) actively to my 300B PP power amp. So, can anyone tell me what this passive stuff is all about. 'Listen passively for dummies so to speak' 9.gif (that's me). O, and I've never been able to find any inf or reviews about the CA506. Info wanted! 1.gif
