digital surround from analog speakers possible?

Recommended Posts

greetings to all,

i was hoping someone could shed some light on my dilemma. i have been searching hi and low for a sound card that will decode ac-3 for my analog speaker setup, the v.2-400. i've been quite happy with them for the past few years. my desire is to use the card to process the signal coming from my home dvd player.

first it was the soundblaster live, then live 5.1 digital, now the audigy (sb 0092). i did some research online, and felt confident, reading that the audigy series have onboard dac and therefore could decode ac-3 for analog output.

much to my dismay, i played the nearest dvd i could find, and ended up trying to read lips...silence. i turned the "ac-3 decode" option on and off in the audio control panel for the audigy, messed with the speaker setup, even tried kx-projects drivers to no avail (all installations and uninstallations were done properly as far as i know). even cd's playback with no sound. however, when i run the audio tests and play cd's with my cd-rw drive, i get glorious music.

i've looked into external dolby decoders like creative's ddts-100, but i wondered, is it neccessary? just to get sound from my external home dvd player? surely there must be a way.

i would appreciate any help anyone can offer. thanks. 5.gif
