frequency division

as you all know, some sub amplifiers have inputs and outputs.

i was wondering if using the outputs on your sub actually DIVIDES the signal according to the cutoff frequency, or if the cutoff frequency setting only sets the maximum frequency the subwoofer can produce.

for example, if i have my cutoff on the sub set to 70hz, and i'm running my mains through it, which can go as low as 35 hz, will my mains and sub simultaneously produce 45hz signals? or will my mains now roll off at 70hz, while the rest of the signal is exclusively sent to the sub.

Since you have your mains running through the sub, your mains are rolling off at 70hz. This feature is for most people who have small speakers with the sub, and dont want the bass to wreck their Radio Shack 6 inch specials. You obviously do not need to run your mains through the sub!
