no his imac will not have an amp on it, what you are going to have to do is use the headphone (stereo pre-out if you are lucky) and use an 1/8th ' to stereo composite cable (rca's) to a receiver and then hook your speakers up to the reciever, otherwise its not going to be possible and to be able to switch between the speakers that are built in and the stereo you will just have to unplug that cable, if the speakers are external then you can buy an 1/8' y adapter and then also that 1/8' stereo to composite and you can have them both hooked up at the same time....

also i would highly recomend getting an external sound card and then if you have a digital reciever you can use the optical or digital co-ax out and that will sound much much better than the post above, i have an m-audio sonica theater adn it can be bought for 100 bucks and it is just great, it blows away the sound blaster stuff, which doesn't support apple anyways, the only straight up sound cards that are 10% fully functional with apple that i have found were the m-audios and they just rock
