onkyo
I have my SB-3 hooked to a Onkyo TX-DS595 & after 5 days of use the woofer in one stopped playing. If I pressed on it gently it would begin to play. Was told voice coil is SHOT! One prob. may have been cause I had it set to Large speaker & not small to send more of the lows to my LFE SUB. Also was told the TX-DS595(75w) is under powering the SB-3? Anyone have a clue on the price of a new woofer? And if I should upgrade to the TX-DS696(100W) so I don't have to crank them up to 50-55 out of 64(volume number varies on audio setup)
Klipsch-daddy
Sounds like to me you either got a defective woofer, or somehow your setup has a lot of distoration in it. I have 110 watts going to my ksb 3.1 (only difference is mine is ported) for over 6 months and they sound great. Also if you are turning your receiver 50-55 out of 64 then that is close to 90% volume with is high, this may be causing the distortation. ------------------ My HTS: MAINS: KSB 3.1 CENTER: KSC-C1 REAR: WHITE QUINTETS SUB: KSW-12 TV: TOSHIBA THEATER VIEW 50" RECEIVER:KENWOOD VR-4080B DVD: SONY S-360 DVD PLAYER FOR SALE PINANNCLE WIDESCREEN CTR (105.00) This message has been edited by Klipsch-daddy on 08-27-2001 at 03:46 PM

I have sb3s powered by a harman kardon hk3370 receiver which is rated @ 70 wpc into 8 ohms and a rca HT receiver rated 80 wpc. The speakers worked well and played loudly. Guest BobG
It is most likely you've blown that woofer from amp clipping. The volume setting you describe is beyond the clean power capability of your amp. A general rule of thumb is that any setting over the 2:00 spot on the volume knob is DEFINITELY going to blow speakers. This is without any bass or treble boost or eq or any other function which demands additional power. Klipsch will cover this error one time on the driver. Contact your authorized dealer for assistance. BTW, both the SB-3 and the KSB-3.1 are ported. There are several differences, but either would have suffered under clipping. I should also state that it is possible that the driver was defective and that clipping did not do it in. From the description you have provided, I am pretty sure you were clipping, but if a voice coil lead came disconnected or fractured, you could experience the same symptoms. A close examination of the woofer will reveal whether it was clipping or not. Contact your authorized dealer.
