mm07
All, I am setting up my first decent surround system and am giving some though to connectors. I've read on here references to "Bananna Clips" (or plugs) connections. Can someone give me a brief tutorial? What are the benefits and where can I get some? How do they connect? Do they just plug into the middle of the speaker connector on the back of my receiver? I've been twisting the stripped wire around the post and screwing it down.`, and to be honest, it is quite a pain, and I always thought there must be a better way. Another question is Are they recommended for connecting the wires to the receiver? The wires to the Speakers? Or both?? I found some on the internet, and they are around $5.00 per pair. SO, $5.00 * 7 channels = 35.00 Then 35.00 * 2 needed at each end) And you are talking about a $70.00 investment for connectors alone. Is it worth it and is there a cheaper alternative? Thanks in advance, -Mike
dougdrake
I think banana clips are for another forum - maybe the Hemp Forum? For banana plugs --- it depends if you need to provide an easy way to connect/disconnect speaker connections fairly frequently. IMO, if you are going to wire up your speakers and leave them connected, I'd forego the fancy connectors as they just introduce another connection into the chain. If you are using wire guage that will fit through the holes in the binding posts (if present) or nicely into the screwn down connector, you could just go with that. DrWho
$5/pair? Yikes http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?&Webpage_ID=3&DID=7&CAT_ID=39&ObjectGroup_ID=108&SO=2 (I would recommend any of the first 6 items in the list as they are more standard than all the rest). Benefits? It's just easier to plug and unplug your cables...useful if you're switching stuff around often. You can use them on both the speakers and the reciever....be careful, some recievers and some speakers use a non-standard spacing which makes the dual banana jacks no longer fit (it was done because of idiots in europe plugging their speakers into power outlets). So ya, banana plugs are just a convenience thing. And as mentioned, instead of wrapping your wires around the post...you should be able to thread the wire through a hole on the side of the middle post. You'll have to unscrew the cap a bit and find what angle the hole goes at - this is definetly the better way to make a connection for a permanent install. ptony619
Get them. I pretty much posted this same question last week. Very easy to do and just looks better. I got my banana plugs from Blue Jeans Cable, only $3.50 a pair, I am very satisfied with them. To install, just Google, "how to install banana plugs", the first link is from Audioholics, called "preparing your own DIY speaker cables" click on that and it is very easy to understand.
