The disappointing thing about SACD 2 channel....

Smilin,

I am sure you are right about the high end - but that is a part of the original disappointment - I wanted it to work some magic at the low end - no funds - the analogue ate them all!!

Even accepting that - and deciding that there is no alternative but to spend proper money on a digital front end it still has to be accepted that the majority of titles one would be listening to would still be on CD. SACD selection being what it is I do not see that changing in the near future. So the question then becomes - how does a moderate SACD player compare when playing CD's to a similarly priced CD only player.

Tricky question to answer without some kind of budget - say I am planning to spend $3000 on a digital front end (which I am not at the moment - but we can all dream). Best place to put my money? Better to include SACD or not? Better to include DVD-A or not? 2 machines? Too many questions!

Max,

Actually most high end SACD player do very good with redbook. I personally feel that any redbook player that makes poorly recorded redbooks sound good is a major compromise. If its taming nasty recordings then what the heck is it doing for the good recordings. I love LP's but I will never understand the LP user that expects there $500 CD player to compete with there 5K vinyl rig...... Makes very little snese to me.

Max,

i've heard scd-777es at my home and it dfinitely was much better on CD that dvp-n9000es still it was not good enough for me.

for the price you talking about i', personaly don;t know any descent sacd player that would play CD good.

perhaps new marant's worth audition.

but you can go an alternate path - get yourself a "midlerange" SACD and get it moded.
