The answer is "yes." You can do either. In a perfect setting, they would be about 6 feet above the floor, to the side and slightly to the rear of the listening position, with enough distance between them and the listening position such that you would still be sitting within the 60 degree vertical dispersion angle - within the "cone" of sound and not having the sound pass over your head. In other words, if they can only be a foot or two away from the listening position, at 6 feet above the floor the sound would go over your head, so you'd either have to lower them or angle them down. On the other hand, you don't want them directly at the side of your head, just a couple feet away, or it would be like wearing a huge set of headphones and the surround effect would be minimized, I believe.
