tpg
A musical instrument/PA shop in a town near me has a pair of Altec 9849-8D for sale. They had a tag that said $300 on top. I didn't ask if the price was for one or two. They were in fairly decent shape with some scratches and the grills probably needed to be redone (they had some kind of tar-like substance on them). What do you guys think? I don't know anything else about them... djk
An OK speaker. 414 12" woofer, about 96dB/W/1M. 32 or 32A horn, depends on the year, has a 90° bend in it. Either an OEM 806 (alnico) or 902 (ceramic) driver, the 902 is better. Make sure they sound OK. The network capacitors were not high quality when new, they are very tired by now. The HF diaphragms are probably work-hardened and would benefit from replacement. If you really didn't like them you could dump the parts on eBay for more than $300.
