What would YOU do?

Recommended Posts

After replacing caps in cornwall 1 found the sound that you are now getting is a change wherein dewald

tube intregrated amp is sounding like your SS, and bottlehead
pre, relaxed and smooth only a bit more of all you had aim for.

ie top , mid more pronounced without beign harsh.

Then only to find that your beloved ss is in serious need of some aditional something, it seem to me that possible the

problem area might be my outlaw 950, which i'm quite fond of.and would have discribe as natural,so too the acurus amp.

my delima how to recapture the signiture of my system without too much upheaval,a great sleeper pre would be nice,

not tube .I have enough to use as reference.

This is about a certain sound that i've been trying to atain and
find it evolving where i least expected it to,what would
you do?

Thanks for your responce ! didn't actually consider room treatment as a probable cause,

seems
like a course in engineering needs to be my next course of action,is
there no quick fix in this hi-tech world of accustic. plastered
walls,ceiling, tile floor =wall treatment.

@silverfox, I too witnessed that change w/my CWII network updates, with the mids/highs much brighter and detailed than before. I did move the speakers closer to the wall, and symetrically changed the angle. Now I did move some furniture around too, so this was also probably a source of "change".

Room acoustaments will definitely affect sound, and that is why I am a firm believer in Equalization, but that is yet another controversial topic. Having dealt with these issues in my automobile, I have peaks and valleys in my frequency spectrum just based on the interior of the vehicle. RTA proves it! Much absorbtion, deflection, and cancellation occuring, so the only way to address this was to employ an EQ to rebalance.

Not saying you need an EQ, but moreover, pointing out that room fixtures, furniture location, etc., do make a difference.

Some of the changes i've made over the last few
months, has been to change origonal caps to Bec GE cans, this made
a marked difference to clarity. replacing speaker wire, and i do
understand that some are of the opinion that this does not affect
sound. From my own experience there is a improvement, tried ic with
same wire and the SS seem to become laboured where as the bottlehead
pre through acurus amp was a bit sharpry, the ic remained with the
bottlehead.

This i
listen to quite often only having to warm up limited the combo and
listening was done mostly at weekend, so was very fimiliar with
sound, now the outlaw pre and amp came together like effortless. Nice
top to bottom.just needed a bit more upper mids, and the last shimmer
from a simbal,

which brings me to this point, bought some VCaps
and replace the Bec, these caps Dean made mention of in a tread
thah he thought highly of , and from how they have affected my system i
can say they are nothing to snivle at .because of how the tube gear
sounds ,getting what i am aiming for in the upper mid and the high back
into my ss will make it worthwhile.
