dabrew
I own two pair of SCR-3s taken from my prior residence. Someone told me of speakers installed in-celling but above 1/2" drywall (no cut out for the speakers) with reasonably good results. This was done because of structural issues and a wife that didn't want speaker grills in the ceiling or walls. Is there any information, for or against, the acoustic impacts (other than loss of highs), installation considerations (other than don't) or other anticdotal experiences installing speakers this way? mas
"Reasonably good results" for in the ceiling speakers (typically used for 'zoned systems') above the drywall ceiling with no cutouts? This is a joke, right? (...and where the camera crew jumps out and says we've been 'had'...) [] Sorry dude, but there is NOTHING that recommends this unless you are interested in appeasing the bats in your attic.
InVeNtOr
first off....Welcome to the forums! from what i understand, you want to put your celling speakers 1/2" above the drywall? the visual of this would be walking into a room and not being able to see the celling speakers at all, right? i wouldn't recommend this at all. i wouldn't even recommend celling speakers for a 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 set up either. i would think the sound would be awefull. MBM135
I would have to concur with the other posters here. I have my speakers mounted in the ceiling and while they are "wife-friendly" they are only adequate and but by no means impressive. Hey, they came with the house so I am using them. If I was building a home myself and needed a low footprint for speakers and wires I would wall mount them for sure at listening height position.

jacksonbart
An colleague of mine says that actually if you buy a nice set up speakers and leave them in the box, not hooked up, they sound pretty good and the wife does not mind too much except for the loss of closet space.
