  1. This is real news to me, and a real concern. What does "true 1080p" give me that the 1080i deinterlaced to 1080p doesn't? I didn't realize that this was going on. Most don't. 1080p is the buzzword to get people to spend 2x the money on a set. Most people that did A/B comparisons have stated the only time 1080p looked extremely better was sitting too close to the set. It's noticable *supposedly* at normal viewing distances, but the problem is so little being broadcast and recorded in true 1080p. Does anyone know if the this player is multi-region? I have a Yamakawa DVD as my wife is Japanese and gets movies from overseas. I wish region was not locked down for most players. I didn't realize you get 5 DVDs with it...makes it a much sweeter deal.
  2. http://orlando.craigslist.org/ele/336969935.html No affiliation other than looking for stuff for myself and came across them.
  3. http://westpalmbeach.craigslist.org/ele/315055030.html No affliation with the seller, but saw it on my local craigslist while looking for stuff for the house I am buying. There is a picture. Just listed on 4/19. Å
  4. I am thinking fanboy here. In the 90's the Yamaha was the Klipsch king [*edit* for recievers; not components] (my RX-V1050 was recently given up) The Panny is a pretty limited unit though. Many that post are really limited more by price than sound quality. It's a good unit though. I like my *price limited* HTR-5960 for my bedroom setup...but doing great duty in my apartment.
  5. So true...I went through this time and again on my Academy search. Fair buy it now posted, yet someone bid the minimum....end of auction it was 2x the bin. Even when I won one, 2 people contacted the guy after offering more.
  6. You can make a virtually noiseless PC for non-overclocked tasks today. (www.silentpcreview.com I think is the link). I overclock and my PC is pretty quiet, I use 20dBa fans x 5 ....30moons.com/pc_chiapet.php ...it's not silent, but it's pretty quiet. I can also pull almost all the fans out for 'normal' operation. However, at my desk I don't notice it over the ambiant noise.
  7. Thanks guys for the replies. I am thinking I may run RCA from my dish (it allows digital only, digital/PCM, PCM only)...just in case...as well as my DVD player (although I am not sure if it truly can do both at once...it's a Yamakawa DVD288K/VGA I picked up since my wife is Japanese and her discs had problems in regular DVD's at the same price point I was looking). I may upgrade as at the time I was just coming off VCR (a 6 head Toshiba M-752) ...DVD is really the main source for my pleasure. I hooked up the optical/coax's last night and played a THX trailer...my wife turned around and commented how the sound never 'really felt' like it came from 'back there'. Now it was like the little man flew all over our place. Can't wait to move into a house and either pick up another two Quartets or go Cornwall for mains. My cheap Insignia's from the recommendations on the net add quite a bit to phantom surround. Å
  8. I pulled out my RCA cables to go all optical/digi coax...but my devices can send along both... Is there any advantage to using all the cables RCA and digital? Thanks Å
  9. UPS has gone WAY WAY WAY downhill. I ship alot and even 2 years ago I'd never use them if I could. My company signed a contract with them though. I have shipped 20 packages from FL to AZ, 3 day (ground used to be the worst, but now even the faster trips have damage). almost all have had major breakthroughs in the outer box. over 50% had damage on arrival, fortunately for just business workstations broken faceplates and a dented box doesn't been end of business day. Try to make a claim with UPS and you will be in for a long run if it's valuable. I had a $300 insured reciever back in 1996 or 97 that took almost half a year to work out and still they decided they would not cover it. The Pak-N-Ship that stuffed it with 6" of padding all around a double box would not help either. good luck.
  10. They are sounding good...I think it was just my old (circa 1990 Yamaha RX-V1050) receiver with a weak channel or something else. I will try the 'tube' tests to make sure the drivers are firing the same. I hear it's normal for one speaker to sound a little different than the other. Can't wait until my digital audio cables come to test out true 5.x sound (no sub, not that I miss it with my Quartets in my little apartment...have to be quick with the volume sometimes already ). Once I move I am hunting down either another set of Quartets or Cornwalls...I still need to figure out what I want if I go beyond 5.1 sound, if I score another Academy cheap I will throw that as a rear center if I have the room.
  11. I have had a set of Quartets for 10+ years now (would have had the Academy that long but sold my original one when I was moving...my current is a later model but going on 2 years old in my hands now). Is there any kind of test tones/test music to check the drivers and hopefully the x-overs? Dialing in my first digital ready reciever (HTR-5960), have TOSLINK and Digital Coax cables coming my way next week Pro Logic II is great though compared to older decoders. Thanks Å
  12. I will agree...not counting my teenage systems, and google searching makes it easy to find my systems on sale through it : My first 'real' system all brand new in around 1995/6, sold due to a divorce in my mid 20's: o Rotel RSP960 surround processor/preamp o Rotel RB980 125watt x 2 main amp o Rotel RB965 100x3 (40x6) center/surround amp o Rotel RT940 AM/FM tuner o Def Tech CLR1000 Center Speaker o Def Tech BP20 Mains o Def Tech BP10 Surrounds o Marantz CC65SE limited edition CD carosel. o Mondial Magic o Isobar 8 o 35" Mitsubishi with some corian top (35405)...didn't like the picture though. o Mitsubishi U560 VCR Sold that due to a divorce to go to: o Yamaha RX-V1050, this and the speakers were all owned by a guy for a guest room. He was a regular at the shop I bough my Rotel/Def Tech setup at. The owner of the shop was upset I had to sacrifice my gear o Klipsch Quartets o Klipsch Academy o PSB 300's (surround) o Yamaha CDC-665 (i miss that Marantz). o Toshiba CX-32G60 32" TV o Toshiba M-752 VCR Then I did this when I had to move to a small apartment going back to college: First, my for sale ad: Wed, Dec 23 1998 12:00 am PSB 300 speakers mounted sideways on high quality wall brackets (support up to 40 lbs I believe), mounted to speaker with screws on side and rear face for security. Asking $175 obo for the set + shipping from West Palm Beach, Florida (stands were ~$50 alone) Going back to school and need money. Next I committed an act that would not be resolved until last year (2005): FS: Klipsch Academy, like new in box w/ manual $115+shipping. Sun, Dec 27 1998 12:00 am Excellent condition, real oak veneer cabinet Freq Response: 65-20k Sensitivity: 96dB SPL at 1 watt/1 meter Impedance: 8 ohms Power handling: 100 Watts continuous Enclosure: 2 way infinite baffle Drivers: Two K-1011 KV 8" Mica impregnated Woofers K-76-KV Tweeter, Horn in D'Appolito array 2200 Hz crossover Original Box 33lbs (solid center) 23 1/4 " wide 11" High 12 1/4" Deep Asking $115 obo + shipping from West Palm Beach, Florida I sold that by 8am the next morning, buyer arrived with $175. Googled my address. I did the 2 channel thing a long long while...from 1998 to 2005 I am in another small apartment now, waiting for palm beach real estate to adjust a bit and signed on to another 7 month lease here. My current setup is going to be (everything is either here now, or in shipment to me): o Yamaha HTR-5960 o Yamaha CDC-665 o Dish PVR-508 o Yamakawa DVD-288k/SVGA o Toshiba CX-32G60 (although at < $3k plasma 50" and projectors > 50" are looking pretty good for an first 'new home' upgrade). o Toshiba M-752 VCR o Klipsch Academy o Klipsch Quartets o Insignia NS-B2111's (if I don't like them, I am only out $87 (wire, mounts, speakers) o Still have that ISOBAR 8 though My whole apartment is only 500 sq feet now, the listening area is only 11x12 basically (although it opens up into the rest of the apartment on one 'wall'). My Master bedroom in my first house was bigger than this if you included the bath and closets . My first listening room was pushing a bit over 400sq ft. It's really probably overkill right now, soon maybe not enough. Thanks to all the responses. Å
  13. Just freshen them up, diaphrams I think are the wear item.
  14. looking at the Insignia's now at best buy for $50. I will eventually move my quartets to surround duty and pick up a set of chorus. I am in a 500 sq foot apartment right now though
  15. Believe me, I see where you are coming from..however; I no longer offer anything bought from my doorstop. Just too much headaches...I sell nice items. I take care of things I own and trash what I wouldn't want to buy myself second hand. I am willing to meet locally on some high-priced things, but for the most part I have found it a big time drain. Å
  16. Thanks I will contact them. I know I hate it as a DIY'er when someone calls me to get the 'how-to' on something I am selling though. I fear a barrage of emails and then support after the fact . I will see how it goes. Just need to know the basics and where to get the parts. I will handle my success and failures from there hehe. I am the second owner since 1995 on these Quartets. First owner had them in a guest room along with the Academy I sold for only $175 about 1997 with box and manual . I had the Quartet's boxes, but Hurricane Andrew flooded where I kept them. I still have the original manual though (more like a pamphlet) and sales handout.
  17. I can agree. I have been turned down on these kinds of things too.... Still, I am in the IT/IS industry...I avoid selling PC's to friends and family and just (as a last resort if they don't go away) send them a Dell link. I was fortunate to get a replacement Academy for my retarded sell back in 199x at $175. They came to my door within an hour Own my second now, and bought it in his living room about 1 hour away for $400. All I need is Chorus fronts and move my Quartets for rear fill duty. Å
  18. $40...reviews are decent. When I move my Quartets are the surrounds and Chorus become the mains. good deal? Å
  19. Want to rebuild mine. 2nd owner. Have an Academy too, so if I can rebuild it, I will. let me know the details and suppliers. Å
  20. I can't speak for all deals, but even a $0.50 (50 cent) phone cover I sold through ebay when I provided my phone number had daily calls from the guy that bought it. He was a bit *challenged*. This went on for two months. I sell on ebay for a national market...if I want to sell at my home and deal with possible door knocking, I'd probably scrap it. I have 178+ now since 1998. easily 2x that much in actually transactions where noone leaves feedback. Even with shipping seems a good deal. Å

    PAYPAL

paypal like accepting CC's in your business is for YOUR convenience...you cannot chargeback their fees to your customers. Ebay or not, if paypal gets a report of someone charging the transaction fees, they will react.
  22. what about a RX-V659 vs HTR-5860? $50 difference (659 is higher but has some more features and another component in).
