  1. Thanks for the replies...multi channel audio is definitely what I'm looking at in the future...SACD in particular, but havning a nice, huge , powerful movie soundtrack playback is nice too!...I did try hooking up a pair of Yorkville YSM-1 studio monitors at one point and I kept getting the sensation that they sounded 'mismatched' with my KM-6's...the Yorkvilles have a soft dome tweeter and the KM-6's the radial horn...it just felt like the highs not cohesive..maybe due to different crossover points in addition to different tweeter materials, anyhow, ...fyi from what I understand , the KM-6's are exact copies of the KG 5.5's , so whatever would work good with the KG series would work the my KM-6's I would think.
  2. I have a pair of KM-6's for front left and right...how important is it to have surround and center channel speakers that match the front speakers, in terms of how they sound and crossover settings? Also, what WOULD be a good surround speaker match , and center channel too, for the KM-6's? There are a pair of KG-3's , which are also floorstanders, but with a single 10" woofer, that I thought about getting and using as the surrounds, just because I figure they are very similar to my KM-6's, but, I'd really prefer something in a bookshelf size for the surrounds..then again, listening to music with 4 full sized speakers sounds intriguing! ..I dunno what to do.
  3. I have a great pair of KM-6's ,and I want to add surround and center channel speakers that will 'jibe' with them! ...btw, I'm a poor guy and can't too expensive...I got the KM-6's used for $175 and they sound great!
  4. I don't know about that....I was talking to a Klipsch tech on the phone a couple weeks ago, and he told me that you'd have to have , like, a 1000 feet of cable or so before resistance would even play a factor, based on testing they did in their lab. (We were talking specifically about the high gauge internal wiring of the speakers that I have, and I mentioned I thought about upgrading them , that's when he went into all this explanation about speaker wire myths...He did say that they use Monster internally on some models , but more for the customer satisfaction than any tangable results.) He mentioned a blind test they did with some people who could not identify generic wire from some of the hyped brands, which I thought was interesting.
  5. I didn't really mean the internal wiring...just thought that whatever benefit some people claim about having more surface area for your external speaker wire couldn't be true, because obviously the legs of all your components on your crossover are much smaller gauge, so I don't see how having fatter external wire would be a benefit when those electrons still have to squeeze thru the smaller electronic components on the crossover.
  6. I never understood any arguements for any cable being better than any other, assuming there all stranded. Especially the guage thing....I mean, why would thicker speaker wire be better?? More surface area for electrons to flow you say?....but what about what the teeny tiny diameter of all electronic components on the crossover? All the spacious surface area, etc wouldn't mean squat when those electrons hit the incoming leg of a cap or resistor or whatever that's the equivalent of 18 gauge or thinner wire, IMO.
  7. I own : Rush In Rio Led Zeppelin AC/DC at Donnington Joe Satriani Live in San Fransico Yes Symphonic Live Roger Waters The Wall Out of those, Led Zeppelin is just on another level for me, but not necessarily for the sound, which is very good considering these concerts were from 20 to 30 years old. It's just a 'must have'. Roger Waters The Wall - a HUGE spectacle with great sound, peformed in Berlin. Yes Syphonic - Excellent sound but not quite the spectacle or excitement of the others. Joe Satriani - I'm a big fan, so I woulda been happy with anything. Luckily, the sound is great too. Rush in Rio - Big fan, looks and sounds fantastic, although in Tom Sawyer Geddy's vocals get overpowered a bit by the crowd and occasionally Alex guitar gets a bit indistinct in the mix. SEEING Neil Peart perform is an experience! AC/DC at Donnington - The ony one of the bunch that's disappointing. Looks , feels and sounds more like a music video. Going to get the Eagles next!
  8. 3DZapper, Yep, that's them....well, things have gone to from disappointing to bad. I was futzing around in both cabinets yesterday and after putting the left speaker drivers back in and firing up the receiver, the tweeter horn no longer produces sound. Moving the + and - wires ever so slightly made them work intermittently , but now they just do nothing. I took the horn apart and they look fairly simple...a magnet and the membrane part..not sure why it fails but I swapped it with the right speakers tweeter horn and that one works fine, so it's not a crossover problem. Anyways, how much will these cost me to replace?...Maybe I could also see about getting a newer crossover as well, just to see if it helps the original problem.
  9. Oh my gosh, you have just described pretty much the exact thing I'm experiencing with my Klipsch KM-6's in the 'Are my Speaker OK?' thread. Decent deep lows , decent highs but the rest is like yanked out!...I wonder if there's a part in the crossover that failed or maybe the drivers or blown?...Anyone experience a similar deal? Is there a Klipsch tech here that might offer some input? I'd hate to get rid of these, they have such a killer look...
  10. Got to listen to louder levels today....Ok, now I'm noticing a trend...it's the frequencies that give the snare drum that punch out to the front of the mix. It's not there. Good clarity, good smack or snap of the snare hit, but utterly punchless ... I auditioned many CD's and even stuff off the radio tuner and whatever frequencies are responsible for that, there is a distinct lack of punch. My friends receiver has no loudness control so I know that's not an issue, and I've cranked the bass on my receiver and also gone 'direct' mode, bypassing all processing. It's strange that these behemoths can't kick like I'd hope, what with two heavy magnet 10" woofers...the sub frequencies are OK, but maybe their just more noticeable because of this lack of mid-bass kick. I'm seriously beginning to think someone might've tweaked the crossover ,as the screwheads to the speakers do show wear..hmmmm. The thing that just seems overwhelming , is for the size of these things, about 3 1/2 feet tall, they sound very small no matter what I tweak. I'm about ready to pull the drivers like suggested earlier and check the crossover also.
  11. Thanks for the reply....I did just notice my friend keeps her systems bass and treble maxed, so that obviously had a lot to do with it. Plus, I'm listening in a much smaller environment and don't get to turn it up as loud as she does (apartment for now). I sure do like the clarity I get , with the digital coax out of my DVD player, it makes listening to CD's a real pleasure.
  12. I bought a pair of used Klipsch KM-6 floorstanding speaker a few months ago, but just now have been able to audition them with a good receiver, a Marantz 5200 and earlier on with an old Sony component receiver....The sound thru both is rather disappointing, although, I haven't had a chance to really crank them flat out yet. The disappointment really comes from lower volumes anyway. A friend has an Onkyo integrated system , with Onkyo floorstanding 4 way speakers. My setup has more clarity to be sure, but, even at lower volumes hers has this great 'density' and kick to the sound. I don't mean ultra low bass, that seems to be there , nor high range frequencies which sound OK as well....I mean it's like someone took a knife and carved out all of that frequency range that produces that 'oomph' , even at lowered volumes. The result is speakers that have good ultra low bass and good treble but very 'tiny' and small, punchless low mid sound. Is there a test or something I can do to see if the drivers or crossover is defective, or does anybody have any other suggestions?....I get the feeling that when I am able to crank these up very loud, I'll still get this 'tiny' , punchless midgrangey sound only louder, ...I have a pair of Yorkville YSM-1's I use as surround speakers and when I kick them on they have that nice low, but not ultra low beef, so I know it's not a receiver problem....is this just the nature of sound that these speakers produce and how can I be sure I'm hearing them to their max potential? Thanks for any replies.
  13. thanks for the reply...Yea, it's very possible I may like the speaker right off and not need to do any upgrading, I just figured maybe in the years since the speaker was discontinued, they made improvements in the drivers or crossover components...what kind of receiver/preamp do you use?...I'm starting from scratch, thinking maybe I can get an audiophile quality components that are several years old for the crucial 2 channel ,music listening stuff and save a little $$ to boot....
  14. Hey I'm getting a nice pair of KM-6's...any owners of these care to share the details of how they sound in their setups? I know the specs are pretty impressive...98dB sensitivity...bass to 34hz....are there any available hardware upgrades like drivers or crossover parts, etc?...can't wait to set them up! I've developed a pretty good ear for music detail by monitoring thru a pro soundcard in my PC and Sony MDR-7506 professional headphones...I hope the Klipsch's can recreate the same level of smooth detail together with room filling power!...I hope to match each speaker with a Marantz 125 watt monoblock amp and probably a 5-7 year old Adcom preamp for starters, then add in some sort of DTS decoder/maybe receiver and finally a DVD player that does SACD's too...I'm hoping for a super hi fi audiophile quality sound with carefully selected, budget-but-still-great sounding components...can anyone relate?? lol
