  1. Thebes, yeah, that's what I was thinking. What should I buy next time?
  2. Thanks guys for the responses. Pierce, I PMed you. Are the KG 4.0s and the KG 4.2s about equal in value?
  3. I'm moving and I'm looking to sale my KG 4.0s and KG 4.2s and I'm wondering what price I should ask for them and how much I should expect to get for them. They are in the Seattle area and I don't really know how to box them up for shipping, so I was hoping to sale them locally.
  4. I have two sets of them. If I wanted to sell them and upgrade to something else (I'm not sure what) how much would I be likely to get for them? Tamara
  5. TillmBil, What is a Toshiba 3950? Are you talking about a Toshiba SD-3950 DVD player? What do you know about this Toshiba? I checked on eBay for the HK430...but they don't seem to have any of that series right now. Oh well, we better get the stuff that's on it's way put together before we order more. Yeah, I haven't listened to 8 Tracks for 30 years or more...certainly NOT my preferred mode... Marvel, Thanks for your thoughts about subs. It sounds like you're saying that a small sub might be better than no sub at all...I guess the 10" Dayton Audio for about $125. would be bigger than the 8" Velodyne you're using. You think it would be worth it? All these boxes for all of this equipment should start arriving any day now. My mom bought two turntables on eBay last night. One is a Marantz 6300 wood turntable from the mid 70's, which is the era when her Walnut case Marantz 2250B receiver was from. Those turntables have been selling from $175. to $375. on eBay. She got this one for $86. It looks like it might clean up real nice. The turntable dust cover has a scratch in it and we're hoping we can get most of it to come out with some elbow grease. Is it possible to get replacement dust covers? She also needs a "foot" (?) for the turntable too. Did Marantz make decent turntables in the 70s? Neither of us know anything about turntables, so we don't really know what makes a good one. The other turntable is the Marantz TT-1200. It looks like it's in spotless shape and it sounds like the guy who sold it would have taken great care of it. Maybe if we can get the vinyl and CDs to sound good her friend will forget about the 8 Tracks (grin). Tamara
  6. Wow! Thanks for all of the ideas about Heresys. This has been interesting. Has anyone come to a conclusion yet? It sounds like Heresys might be the proper way, but it sure looks weird. Maybe I'll try saying Heresy speakers... Tamara
  7. Thanks Jim, I'll start looking for an HK 430 - 930. I picked up the Jensen TF-3s tonight. I compared them to my KG4s...the KG4s absolutely won hands down. It was no contest. It's too bad the Jensen TF-3s aren't as auditorily pleasing as they are visually pleasing! They are in great shape. They are thick walnut veneer. The guy bought them in March of 1964 at a stereo store in Massachusetts and he has obviously taken great care of them. He said he used them until a month ago when he bought some new speakers. They certainly make me appreciate Klipsch speakers. I still think they are worth the $25. until I can find more good speakers for my mom. She'll at least be able to compare them to her Heresys (how should I spell that !!!) and know that her Heresys are a way better speaker. Besides, I could take them back to him for the next week and get my money back.
  8. I want the Cornwalls. Aren't they gorgeous!
  9. Oh wow, thanks for that explanation, that's fascinating. So they really ARE a Heresy!
  10. The speakers are going to Vancouver, Washington (near Portland) and I live in Seattle, so it actually might be a while before I hear them, or see them. But I'll let you know when I do. Speaking of "Heresy"...my mother's friend has a collection of EIGHT TRACK TAPES (!)...which he wants to listen to. I struggled trying to figure out what I could connect to a receiver so he could hear them. I bid on an 8 Track Player thing and won it (shrug) but now I don't know whether or not it will do the job. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=5728900143&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT Is it some combination receiver thing? Is there a way to bypass all of that stuff and just use it to play the 8 Tracks? The reason I liked it is that it didn't look too ugly considering, and I thought it would stack nicely in a stack of equipment, where a lot of them were only half that size and I didn't know where they would physically go in the room. I'm certainly open to upgrade ideas of higher quality stuff! For now I'm trying to get them up and running enough that they can begin to both get hooked on it. Some of this stuff can move off to the bedroom, or my mother's craft room, as better stuff is acquired for the main system. In fact, what kind of inexpensive receiver would you suggest for my mom's craft room? It's actually the place she ultimately is most likely to experience music, for the first time in her life...so what kind of speakers would work for there too. It's just a medium size bedroom type room.
  11. ---------------- On 11/7/2004 2:46:29 PM 76scalas wrote: A speaker that is not fully horn loaded would be Heresy! ---------------- Ok, sorry, but now you get to explain that to me...I'm a newbie here too, and all I know is that I LIKE the SOUND of Klipsch speakers, but I don't understand about horns etc. Anybody care to help me out so I get the joke?
  12. Thanks Rick, Glad you found the Khorns! We'll see how it all turns out. Let me know. I'm not sure how anxious my mother will be to change the grill cloth. I've read that JoAnn Fabrics has the cloth too. Anyone know what the difference is between the cloth at these different sources? Is one fabtic more "correct" than another. This would be for Heresy's if that matters. Tamara
  13. I don't tend to use my iPod with headphones, but it does quite well when I connect it up to a stereo via the dock (I guess I have four docks) or when I connect it to my car stereo via a SONY cassette adapter (no other way to do it without ripping out my car stereo!!!) But then I have all of my MP3 files ripped at 320 and I think that makes a big difference too. I take my iPod to work and stick it in the dock with my old Marantz 2215B receiver. It's great fun to have thousands of songs right there with me at work. I've tried and tried to hear a difference between CDs and my MP3 files and I swear I can't hear it, but then I have a $200. sound card on my computer and a specially made Monster Cable connection between the sound card and the receiver. I've really enjoyed being able to take music with me whereever I go. Tamara
  14. Which leads to another question, I wonder why they chose to NAME them Heres(ies)? her·e·sy < hérrəssee > (plural her·e·sies) noun 1. religion unorthodox religious opinion: an opinion or belief that contradicts established religious teaching, especially one that is officially condemned by a religious authority 2. religion holding of unorthodox religious belief: the holding of, or adherence to, an opinion or belief that contradicts established religious teaching, especially one that is officially condemned by religious authorities guilty of heresy 3. unorthodox opinion: an opinion or belief that does not coincide with established or traditional theory, especially in philosophy, science, or politics 4. holding of unorthodox opinion: the holding of an unorthodox opinion that is in conflict with established or traditional theory <12th century. Via Old French from, ultimately, Greek hairesis choice, sect, from haireisthai to choose. The underlying idea is of somebodys choice of a way of thinking.> Encarta® World English Dictionary © & (P)2004 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. 15. I already e-mailed the info on fixing up the cabinets to my mother. Thanks! It looks really helpful and like it would be a lot easier than actually refinishing them down to bare wood. The subwoofers...the 10" Dayton Audio is $124.88, the 10" Titanic MKIII Kit is $349.80, and the 12" Titanic MKIII Kit is $536.70. That's a big price spread. With those price differences I would imagine they could afford to end up with the 10" Dayton Audio sooner than they would get the 12" Titanic...is there a big difference in sound. Which one makes the most sense? And where in the world does the subwoofer connect to the Marantz 2250B, or to my receiver for that matter?
  16. Oh yeah, I meant to tell you that the risers are supposed to come with them, even though they didn't show them in the pictures. Are they enough to raise them up properly? I think to start with we won't have a subwoofer. I want them to listen to them alone and see what they think, and then maybe we'll order that kit Erik talked about. Is that the best subwoofer value for the money? As I recall, on that website there were three kinds of subwoofers: Dayton Audio, MTX Audio, and the Titanic MKIII. It seemed Erik was suggesting the MKIII kit. Is it the better value for the money? Would I want one too?
  17. Hey, thanks for the Jensen info, it's interesting. The ones I can get are the TF-3 rather than the TF-3B and the pictures do look different. I wonder if they sound similar, I would imagine they must. Are they selling those CURRENTLY for $249. a pair? If so, then $25. looks to be a good deal. I think the ones I would get are all walnut veneer, no vinyl. Do you want to know what I think of them after I get them tomorrow or Monday? I'm glad you guys think I did ok on the Heresy's...
  18. Hm, the eufonious looks interesting. Is there a difference in quality of turntables based on them being old or new? There are some pretty wood turntables from Marantz (6300 and others)in the 70s that my mom likes (well I think they're pretty too.) What kind of quality would they be? Anybody have any idea? http://www.classic-audio.com/marantz/6300.html So, on the back of the Heresys...the thing you stick the speaker wire in (grin)--it must have a name--how big will the hole be? Will speaker wire fit in it, or will my mom need to get one of those special ends to put on the speaker wire? I've never needed those ends for my KG 1.2s or 4.2s, but I had to buy them for my KG 4.0s. I'm kind of having to try to coach her from afar...I guess that's what you guys are doing with me too. Thanks... Tamara
  19. Hi Rick, Do you have enough left for a pair of Heresy II's? And if so, how much would you want to sell it for? Tamara
  20. When the grills are off, please see picture above, where the yellow spots are, can they be gotten off without damaging the speakers?
  21. So, did I mess up too much, or are these salvageable? I hope in the end they turn out beautiful and I'm vindicated.
  22. Well, I seem to have "won" some Heresy's on eBay. I had made a bid before we started talking about how the Heresy's don't have such good bass...I guess if they want more bass we'll just have to do the subwoofer. I do think my mother would prefer the 21" height of the Heresy over the 35" Forte, or the 39" Chorus. I get the impression that Heresy does a better job with higher end sounds. Is that true? As for the turntable, we'll have to upgrade later. I seem to be "winning" a Marantz TT 1200 that I bid $9.95 on a few days ago. It looked like it was in good shape. Apparently it is belt driven and from 1981. Does anyone know anything about it? If the Marantz 2250B receiver didn't arrive today, then it is supposed to arrive on Monday. I have no idea when the Heresy's will get there. As of now they have nothing to connect to the receiver. I guess once the Heresy's get there at least they'll be able to listen to the radio. The Heresy's are walnut and I think refinishing them might be in order. We'll see once they arrive. I think changing the grill cloth to black would be in order too. After my mom does all that work, she'll definitely be invested in them! I hope they'll like them, and I better be more careful about my bids in the future! I had second thoughts on these, but it was too late. In terms of speaker wires and cables...in the past I've purchased MCX25 Monster Wire at $2.50 a foot, and XPHPCI Monster Cable at $1.25 per foot. What would you suggest this time? and uh...I've never had a turntable, what kind of cables are they supposed to use to connect the turntable to the receiver... Thanks, I looked at the "Cleaning Vinyl" thread. I think I need to go back and reread it to figure out which way is both most economical and effective. Interesting photo Jim, what is it? http://seattle.craigslist.org/ele/47417021.html Is it against the rules to talk about non Klipsch speakers on the Klipsch forum? I found a pair of Jensen TF-3 speakers on Craig's List for $25. The guy lives in my neighborhood and he says I can come get them tomorrow for the $25. and if I don't like them I can return them in a week and get my money back. They are walnut (my mom's preferred color)and he says he bought them new in 1964. They are 25 watt speakers with a 10 inch woofer, three mid-range and a sono-dome tweeter. When they have NO audio equipment I can't go too wrong for $25. can I? I read what some people wrote on-line about them and they seemed to like them quite a bit for these kinds of prices.
  23. Do you guys "do" turntables? They need one to go with this system. What would you suggest?
