  1. wow my father, auto mechanic for coming up on 35 years uses "robbing peter to pay paul" all the time, he's the only one ive ever heard say it before tonight. I think there is more to it though, Ill have to ask him next time i call.
  2. 700 for a 20"? I paid just under $300 for my viewsonic 19" widescreen lcd, 8ms gaming monitor... www.newegg.com check it out before you buy anything, hell, even if you need it NOW they'll overnight it Edit: heh didn't realize previous was original poster still good info for anyone else looking though, or if you take it back you might be able to step up
  3. Personally, I have 2 that I cant seem to date correctly, the first is reading my first book, a night before christmas, all the way through to my grandma, and the second is me and my father eating a whole pack of oreos watching a thunderstorm through the screen door (which i still do ) i believe these were both as an early 3 yr old, but im not exactly sure. anyone have anything earlier? when's "normal" for a kid to start reading? A friend brought this up and I can't seem to stop thinking about it. So I figured I'd go ahead and infect everyone with it. It's worse than having a song stuck in your head...
  4. Pearl Harbor from the boat. I wish I could find the pic's of Korea, but all well.
  5. Thanks everyone for your suggestions, big thanks to sputnik and boom for their for their offer The level of knowledge, and the generosity of everyone here constantly surprises me. (although it shouldn't anymore) I will definately resurrect this thread when I listen to a few things, let everone know what I got and heard. Sorry for the late response, we ported in Portugal yesterday and things were really hectic for a while. Maybe I can get a hold of some things over here that aren't found in the states, and finally be able to contribute something instead of just leeching knowledge from everyone. Thanks Again -Rob
  6. I listened to a friend of mine's setup the other day and all he had was some classical symphony on hand. I absolutely fell in love with it. What would you folks recommend, say 5 discs, for the absolute must haves, a starter set if you will, into classical music?
  7. Is brand matching not normal? I thought it made sense that product A would be designed for use with product B. another question though, as just about everything in the klipsch line is disgustingly sensitive, has anyone tried running their speakers off of just their processor? It only has to provide a max peak of what 8 or 16 watts if you normally listen at less 1? And it would remove 2 sets of jacks and a bunch of electronics from the signal path.
  8. so, will the solid state clone of the one-time worlds best sounding, over engineered, limited production, best amp to ever grace the livingrooms of mankind, sound good with a pair of rf-7's? going through the one review i found, they tend to be scratchy in the 3khz range on an older infinity flagship. and if i were to get monoblocks, should i brandname/era match for a pre? thanks again to everyone who replied
  9. wow thanks for the replies!! didn't quite expect anything so fast looked at the rotel on audiogon, and 1st impression is good. recommend their pre's as well? I'm really starting to get antsy now, as i have the money to put together a really nice system, but no place to put it until i can FINALLY close on my house!
  10. so i was just playing around on the internet and found a pair of these on ebay. anyone know anything about them? i've looked around on google and i cant even find out if they are tube or ss. what are they worth? will they match to the rf-7's im planning on buying soon? thanks for any info!!
  11. thanks for all the info, i'll sleep better at night knowing after all that, ill never be able to pose an unaswerable question here. much appreciated, and i will definately look into the room treatments.
  12. I was reading through the posts the other day, I believe in the general q&a section, when I came across some people flaming each other back and forth about impedance values and effect on wattage or some such thing, but it brought to mind a question and I've had a hard time finding an answer. So... here we go. Please keep in mind that I dont own any hi-end gear at this time, and that most of this is based on my understanding of things, which may be way off. Say your speakers are running at the pretty standard 8 ohm and you want to run at 4 ohm to increase your available wattage to stop clipping at peaks or whatever how do you go about doing this? Is this the same as bi wiring or am I way off? Maybe a setting on the amp, or do you change a resistor from the speaker itself (with a pot or physically)? I also believe that someone said that heritage speakers are best matched to the amps at 2.8 ohms. True/False? On a completely unrelated topic, I recently saw an install of the most hideous baffles for walls that I have ever seen. They overlap each other, stick out several inches from the wall, and are varying depths and sizes. I understand the reasoning, and I know the math is beyond me, but wouldn't it be nearly as effective (and much more pleasing to the eye) to use carpet or heavy drapes or maybe put those Styrofoam egg crate things on?
  13. Actually, I'm out to sea right now, won't be home for another month or so. I'm looking into renting a house instead of an apartment specifically so I dont piss off the neighbors I expect, going off an average for the places I've been looking at, about 14' by 16' or maybe a tad smaller. I'm also looking to expand to 5.1 HT setup, this is mostly just to be a starter set for that. Over and over it seems, I hear to look into Heritage speakers instead of the newer models. I assumed that as time went on they would get better at making speakers with newer technology/materials. Has Klipsch quality gone down over the years, or does everyone just prefer to have a monster dominating the living room? I can see the appeal, but I (probably like everyone else here) just want the best sound I can afford. Thanks again
  14. So... I've saved up for awhile, and im sitting on about 3600 dollars to build a 2.1 system. I currently own nothing that I would want in my listening room, so I'm starting from scratch. Is this enough to build something decent? I'm currently thinking of rf-7's, a sunfire true sub, and a denon reciever/amp. Completely open to suggestions though. Also, any suggestions on a sonically complex orchestral CD for demoing purposes? I say orchestral because I've heard what I thought were decent speakers turn muddy and I don't know, cluttered, when a friend brought a couple discs over. Thanks for any help!!
  15. got a 1... the book thing tripped me up
