  1. Live about 8 miles away from the Canes stadium. Alas while i don't have tickets I will definately be cheering them on from a loaded bar about 500 yards away. I have to say though that while I would be hurt if they lost, Edmonton has made one amazing comeback from what i picked to be a shutout game 5. Until then... -Eric
  2. Dylanl i wrote you about your speaker. Let me know if you really want to get rid of it. Regards, Eric
  3. I have thought about what you said Jay, about some of the adverse effects of dual centers. However, i never wanted to use two centers side by side (where i definately agree with you) but rather one slighty above the listening area and one below it to: 1. Take some strain off my reciever and allow voices to come through as clear and powerful as the front speakers tend to in most digital soundtracks via the use of an additional amp. 2. Try to simultaneously create a better center dispersion by having the voices appear in the center of my screen thanks to the horn tweeters. This is more experimental than anything as i have searched for the pros and cons of using two center channels placed above and below a screen for a few weeks now with lackluster results. That being said I definately appreciate an comments that might address the issue. Regards, Eric
  4. Thanks for the input guys. I saw all of those Rc-35 on ebay last night and they do look quite tempting. Think there is any real sonic difference between it and the Rc-3 that i currently use up front? Do you think there would be a noticable difference between the two (Rc-3 and Rc-35) if i used both in a dual front center channel configuration off of a separate two channel amp? I am not planning on doing so but have entertained the idea of running two center channels, one above and one below, my screen. Thanks again for any help you can give. Regards, Eric
  5. Hi guys i thought i would start here since it is the best of the forums I am currently a memeber of. I already have a post on audiogon, but I am looking for an additional Rc-3 or Rc-3II in black to use as a rear surround in a reference series 6.1 setup. Any that are contemplating on letting one go to upgrade please let me know. If for any reason posting a wanted ad on the forums is illegal or frowned upon I appologize and hope that someone will please let me know. Regards, Eric
  6. Thanks for all of the input guys. Joe, i eagerly await your review on the difference between the rc-7 and your new rc-64. Both of these are supposed to be vastly superior to the rc-3...now its just a matter of which one to get. Keep me updated. Regards Eric
  7. Thanks for the insight guys. I will stay away from the 2 center channel setup and steer more towards locating an Rc-7 or Rc-64. Also i am working on getting a better digital camera to post some pics though right now the system is not set up in an optimal room for sound (especially with the real estate the Velos take up). Lastly westcott do you think it would be easier/better sounding to raise the crossover on the Rc-3 to 80-100Hz, and follow up with the Rf-3s in the same fashion (moving their crossover from 60Hz to 80Hz), or lower the crossover on the Rc-3 to 60Hz to match the Rf-3s. I have tried each and honestly it seems that there is very little difference although I get worried that i might blow the little Rc-3 at 60Hz when the system is cranked. Regards Eric
  8. Hi guys, currently i am running (4) Rf-3s front and rear, an Rc-3 and a pair of Velo 18s. Power is supplied via an Hk-AVR 525 powering the center channel and an HK PA-4000 bridged powering the fronts and rears. HK's crossovers set at 60Hz for the fronts and rears and 80Hz for the center. That being said i am happy with the sound when things get going but have constantly toyed with the idea of adding a second Rc-3 to augment the first one or move on to an Rc-7. Now that the newer reference series are out I am again toying with the same idea but have added interest into one of the newer Rc-64s. I would love to have a few recommendations on which of the three would be the best path to go down, and whether or not the newer reference series would still sound good with the older models that i am currently using. Any help is most appreciated. -Eric
  9. Hey bro i work at circuit part time for extra cash. I will check all of the inventory for ya to let you know where if any you can find one. -Eric
  10. Hi all i am considering putting my new 505 up for sale if there are any that are interested. Its about 1-2 months old, immaculate condition, with original box, manual, etc... I paid 500 for it new at CC and would like to see 300-350 out of it. Any that are interested please let me know. i can also be reached at: ekbridges22@yahoo.com -Eric
  11. What type of eq are you using audible? How do you have it set up and what style amps are you using to run those big guns? -Eric
  12. Let me preface by saying that i know this question has been asked many many times with good answers to it each time, but i have begun thinking myself. I am curious as to how say a pair of SVS cs ultras with a samson s-1000 would stack up against a pair of pro style JBL-4654C subs with a descent bit of eq'ing to them? It seems to me that most of the movies big bass falls around 30-45 Hz where alot of these cinema subs shine. On the other hand the svs have had nothing but glowing reviews (esp hometheaterhifi "subwoofers under the christmas tree." So how would the two compete in these prime areas and then how bad would the big pro subs be crushed down low? Thanks to any and all that reply. -Eric
  13. Just for my clarification was exactly does a 3 prong to 2 prong adapter due, i guess the question is why would removing the ground help to eliminate noise? -Eric
  14. hard to say if its either. sounds more like a loud hum when the volume on the sub is pinned. i know that velodyne had some trouble with the FSr-18 s in the past but i do not remember the remedy that they suggested. -Eric
  15. while i was playing around with my system today i was playing around with my amp settings and noticed an ever so slight hum coming from my big velo fsr-18. When i turned the volume on its amp all the way up the hum got pretty noticeable (i only listen at 2-3 out of 10 so i had to have my head pretty close to it to hear anything) from around 4-5 feet away in a dead quiet room (have never noticed it in movies). I have noticed that my velo is the only component in my system that uses a 3 prong power cable and like all of my other components i have it plugged into a monster hts-2500 power center. Thus here are my questions: Is the hum possibly attributed to a problem with the velo amp/can it hurt the sub? Would it be beneficial to put 2-3 prong adapters on all of my other equipment (since all of the other things are 2 prong) to isolate a ground loop(amps whcih are hk, hk-525, tv, dvd etc...)? If others with this series velo were in my shoes would you be alarmed or just consider yourself to be overreacting? Thanks for any that reply and please throw out all the suggestions that you can. -Eric
  16. Good to hear that all of my worries are just overreactions for the most part. Not only does it help me immensely with reassurance, but it also helps to iron out (quickly) any of these problems that i might see in my or a friends own system. Oh and Dr. Who do you know the official name of that first coincidence about the grounds discharging when turned off one after the other? Is that similiar in theory to back induced Emf on a speaker? Also yes the amps are essentially the identical make and model all from the same family. They are just 8 and 4 channel native amps that i have bridged to 4 and 2 channel amps. The main reason that i got them was because of really good deals and the same matched front 3 speakers. Thanks again for all the advice and help. -E
  17. Let me start by saying thanks to all that put in their thoughts. I wanted to reply to all of you right away but i realized that i would be a little trigger happy if i did so without a little more through testing. Thus i have surmised the following; 1. When i turn off the first amp and wait 20-30 seconds before i turn off the second one everthing is perfect (no pop, no nothing...other than the usual sound i get when cutting the power to my speakers) 2. Shutting things off and powering up as you all suggested yielded perfect results as well. In powering up 1. Reciever then 2. Hk Pa 4000 3. Hk pa 2000. When powering down: its everything described above in reverse. 3. It seems that there is only the persistent popping when i turn the amps off consecutively one after the other, thus i will wait for a short time before i power down the second one. Lastly, do others experience a slight sound through your speakers when powering up your amps, not loud just a sound like the amps are ready to send in the power when the signal is sent to them? Second, is there any benefit to having my 3 channel amp power the Main L/R and center and 2 channel power the rears vs. letting my 2 chanel power the main L/R and the 3 channel power the rears and center? (i used configuration one as its easier to just have one amp on during stereo listening). -Eric
  18. Nah, it just a manual turnoff and on. It seems now that i am still playing with it that when i wait a few minutes after i turn amp 1 off to turn off amp 2 that the pop is not quite as loud (and by loud i am sure that the horn loading of the sound that is most likely coming through the tweeter only magnifies what i hear). Will continue to experiment...and thanks Indy it helps to know that someone else has something similiar to what i am experiencing....will remember to brreeaaathhh.
  19. Here is the current setup: Rf-3's in the front and back, rc-3 center, 2 subs (not important). Hk avr-525 reciever (as my pre-amp), Hk Pa-2000 amp (bridged running the fronts)and Hk Pa-4000 (bridged running the center and rears). Here is the problem: After continuous playing with both movies and music, during which both amps sound marvelous (great extension, control, etc..over the efficient Rf-3s). When i got to power off the system everything shuts off fine until i get to the amps. Which ever amp i shut off first, no matter which one, will emit a fairly loud pop out of my front speakers (its very fast but moderately loud) or rear depending on the amp. Then when i shut off the other amp it turns off just like normal. When i only have the Pa-2000 in the system everything is fine, likewise with just the 4000...it only happens when both are used and then turned off. I am not sure if this pop is harmful or not, nor am i sure how to get rid of it. It just seems odd that it only comes from the first amp that i turn off, of the pair. Both are plugged into a Monster hts-2000 surge so i know its not out of the wall, and both powerup and play wonderfully for me so i dont think the problem is in the actual amp? Any thoughts on the subject will be both helpful and greatly apreciated as i try to track down the cause of this in my system. Thanks to all that apply. -Eric
  20. hmm, well i am a believer that "much better in terms of components" gets to a point of diminishing returns very very quickly. So to answer our question no, i dont think it would be that much beter, especially when you factor in the fact that (answer to question no. 2) we all do seek to have the best sound quality that we can within our own budgets. -Eric
  21. Absolutely the Dpr 1001/amp combo would be superior to the Avr-630 in my own opinion. However that is only with some of the amps that you had listed, Parasound (Hca-1205, Hca-1206, and perhaps some of the older Hk citation or signature amps that are currently selling on and off of audiogon for real steals right now). However, unless you are dealing with the super recievers (B&K Avr-307, Denon Avr-5803, RxZ-9 if you like the Yammie sound, Pioneer thx ultas, etc... then any reciever (used as a preamp) and seperate amp will usualy outmuscle any reciever. If you are looking at separates though i encourage you to look at a total seperates system like the rotels that so many have had great success with. Its more expensive but you can find good deals in the used markets and many pre-amps alone had the same or higher budgets that alot of the nicer recievers had overall. Thus they are a much better fit unless you want to start with a reciever then move it to pre-amp only duty. With that being said i personally own a Avr-525 (the precursor to the 630) and have moved it to pre amp only position with bridged Pa-4000 and Pa-2000 amps with 4 Rf-3's and an Rc-3 and absolutely love my system for both music and movies. The only way that i would move up would be to get one of the Avr-7300's on the way and even then i dont think i would notice a great increase in power, just better video processing (with the coveted upconversion to component) and a much cooler look. I also have the chance to play with the Avr-630 every day and i think for the money it is a great reciever that matched with the right speakers would make for a great home theater/music experience. And you were right it trounced the 1001 in every category that i auditioned them in save for the amount of heat it produced (accursed digital amps). Sorry for the rambling but i hoped this helped a little in helping you make a decision. -Eric
  22. I have that dvd and an all klipsch setup, and along with JP I, i have never heard any distortion even with most of my Hk gear turned up a pretty good way (at least reference level, though i did not have my spl meter). It seems to me that since the salesman turned the system up that loud for you as soon as you came in, then he probably has turned it up ALOT louder for those choice clientel who love to hear it LOUD. Also if there was distortion in the tweeter there is a very good posibility that he might have already cooked it using underpowered gear (for the listening level) or just did not have the denon dialed in right. I can speak for many here when i say that reference level is not a problem with most Klipsch provided that they are setup correctly. Thus it sounds to me like your demo was of a good set of speakers that had been in the wrong set of hands for way too long. -Eric
  23. I second the look at the knight shadow sub. I had the chance to listen to a friends and it is quite an amazing little box in itself. The driver on this thing is very intimidating and the output and speed that it put out for its size was extraordinary..especially for its price -Eric
  24. Nope but they do have a 30 day no questions asked return policy.
  25. I have had the chance to play with both of them, almost on a daily basis and personally i think the Hk leaps and bounds better sounding, as well as more powerful, than the panasonic. I am sure that this stems from the fact that it is supposed to cost 3 times as much and comes from a company with the knowledge base and budget that most others would be jealous of. However, both look very good, are almost the same size, and put off nearly no heat (though the panasonic has a tiny fan on the back just in case). Like i stated before i have had the chance to demo them side by side (go to almost any circuit city with you own demo material and see if you can talk the salesman into hooking them up, i had no problem) on the newer polk rti, infinity alphas, and some of the smaller systems from both companies. The Hk was the clear winner in not only sound quality but overall output and its flexibility doesn't take away points either. Though i did not buy both to try them on my Rf-3s, given from what i heard from the larger and less efficient Polk Rti10 and Rti12 i think that the Hk had much more headroom, control, and ability. It just depends on whether or not your budget will allow. Good luck on the amp search. -Eric
