  1. I called emo again today and again got xfered over to their tech support and it was kind of the same run around. Well, i put my foot down and twisted it a little bit with them and told asked them, is this the quality i should expect for a 900 dollar amp or is this something i should worry about in a brystol amp or a parasound. I Said, line attenuators will hide the problem and not fix it. He thinks its not the amp because when one channel is plugged in, there is no hum, but when a second channel is applied a signal, the hum starts. He thinks its an externality. Well, i tested it with my phone, and my umc-1, two completely different devices, one connected to sa wall, one with its own power generation and the same problem happen. That kind of tells me that its the amp right? None the less, i am shipping it in for repair, i told em that this was unacceptable and the root cause needs to be fixed. And i was honest too, i told them, look, my expertise in this area is none compared to yours but something is amiss here, and tbh, i dont think that im in the wrong with this, not after all of themonths of troubleshooting i have done.

How did you test with your phone? With a 3.5
mm headphone to stereo RCA cable?

  2. I haven't used a Heresy between Cornwalls, but other people here have with good results. I do use one between La Scalas and it works very, very well. Naturally it's always best to have all the speakers be as much alike as possible, but, generally speaking, any properly performing Heritage speaker will match well with any other properly performing Heritage speaker.

  3. Did taxes last night and the results are favorable, so my UPA-7 is reserved. Plan is to drive the La Scalas and Heresys on five channels and build a THT to be driven with one of the other channels, and if one's not enough, I'll still have a channel left to hang another THT from.

  4. I also time aligned a pair of speakers but I used an active crossover to take my measurements, then I adjusted the drivers placement until the the delays were zero. Surprisingly the magnets were very close to perfect alignment. Next I designed and built the speaker boxes to compliment the drivers placement.

I would think time alignment by ear would be no more than a guessing game, however magnet alignment seems to have some relevence.

    Dave

I'm fortunate enough to have heard those speakers. They sound niiiiiiice.

  5. An Academy will be no improvement in terms of tonal match -- the "off" you hear -- over the Quartet you have now, and it will be a couple steps down in output capability.

Putting a Heresy in the middle is the lowest initial cost and the

path of least resistance. It also offers an easy exit path -- sell it

-- compared to more complicated options that have you building one-offs. All things considered, I would put the Heresy center at option one. Another pair of Heresys will make fine surrounds.

Incidentally, your room is the about the same size as mine, and my Heresy has no trouble matching the La Scalas at any output level I require. Sometimes the output level I require is "ridiculous."

  6. I have la scala's and heresy's...the heresy's wont even come close to being able to keep up with the la scala's.

I also have two pair of La Scalas and a Heresy center, and unless the OP has a huge room (which he might; he didn't say), the Heresy will be plenty capable of meeting the need. It only has to "keep up" to reference level at the listening postion.

  7. Wow, I was expecting some comments after the graphs were posted. Looking at these bring up a lot of questions IMO. 1. Looking at the Cornwall response it doesnt look to be as sensitive as either Chorus model. 2. The Chorus II seems to be heads and shoulders above the Cornwall II in the bass management

Had both side by side and I agree with all the others here. The Chorus II just walks away from a Cornwall. I don't like a speaker that loses control with a little horsepower and ole Duke Spinner said it best "the Cornwall becomes a rumble box". That is exactly what it did in my room. Crown K2 on the 15 inch woofer of a Chorus II is nothing less than a sledge hammer.

Yep. People see the sensitity measurement and think, "Oh, power doesn't matter with these speakers." Those people are wrong -- that 15" woofer is hungry and needs a proper diet to be strong.

Incidentally, La Scalas behave the same way.

  8. Or hang an Airport Express on the back of your receiver, connect them with a $3 toslink cable, use the iPod's "Remote" app to control iTunes on the computer, stream the music from iTunes on the computer to the Airport Express, and give up nothing instead. You can also use Airplay to go directly from the iPod to the Airport Express if you're so inclined, and in that case you also give up nothing.

The iPod touch is great for the gym. You can carry hours of music on it and keep your workout routines and notes in its Notes app. That's especially useful if you're using a periodized routine so you do something a little different each time you're there -- you never lose track of how many reps and what weight you're supposed to be doing today.

  9. I'm also a fan of tha Harman Kardon gear -- I use an AVR-235 for preamp/processing and to run center and surrounds, and an HK PA-2100 runs the mains. Lots of folks love Denon, but I've always thought Denon sounded thin compared to what Harman brings, and the only Onkyo I've heard sounded brittle, so I've stuck with the HK. Fortes would be the ultimate surrounds, but if a screaming deal on two Academys comes up, ****** it . . . or a pair of Quartets, or a pair of Chorus Is and move the Fortes to the back. Lots of ways to skin the cat! Then the Epics can be the bedroom or office system -- that seems to be the way it goes around here. I still have my first Klipsch, a pair of 1982 (I think) Heresys I bought in 1991.

I'm not a real good advice giver, but I will offer one piece -- go slow! The enthusiasm here is contagious and you can spend a lot of money and collect a lot of gear in a hurry, and then end up having more hassles and less fun. Ask me how I know!

  10. It's great to see this thread bumped, and it's hard to believe it's been four and a half years since I last posted in it. From four years and three pages ago, here are Happy and Gracie:

They both crossed the rainbow bridge in the summer of 2009, and I was driving home today I thought of them for the first time in a while. Funny how these things converge when you're not looking for them.

Minna and Riley take their place in my house, but not in my heart. Each has his or her own place there. Minna, like Gracie, is a female German Shepherd and a shelter rescue, and Riley, like Happy, is of unknown heritage and a street stray. Rescues make the best pets.

  11. I live in Fresno CA which is a small city. The bay area is about a 3 hour drive and LA about 4 hours, although I don't mind the drive for a good deal. It's very rare to find used Klipsch speakers in my area.

Oh good, another Central Valleyan on the Forum. Welcome, and congratulations on your find! I used to own a pair of Forte 1s and they're great speakers. Now you get to find out what amp you like best with them, and discover how surprisingly well-recorded some of your CDs are, and how surprisingly badly done others are. ;-)
