  1. You said you were liquidating your assets.  That is all.  What you meant was shifting your asset allocation.

Indeed different.  While you may be in a "no panic" mood at my age I don't have that luxury and my take on the current global economic situation is less than optimistic.

As I said I have no time to wait for recovery.  For those who do, hold fast.

As for me and my house we are assuming the next few years may be less than growth years and could make the last "great recession" look pretty good.

    Dave

Been speaking to my advisor everyday for the last five straight. I don't know your age Mallette but I am nearing 63 and I ask my broker "am I a long or short term investor" speaking on recovery in down markets. Assuming I'm not dying before this post he considers me a long term investor with time still on my side. Advisor sales speak?, who knows but even with zero debt I am cognoscent of every up and down, particularly these sharp downs.

At least a good opening today up nearly 400. Hold on tight!

  2. Take a look what Exon and Chevron have done lately -

Take a look at the profit they are still making.  They are not losing money, just making less than King Midas ransom.

Making a profit - the deed publicly held companies are held to. Isn't that what most any company in any country is based on - profit.

What number is too much? Who decides that, you? Does or did the company you work for make profit, to pay employees such as yourself?

  3. Brent North Sea crude is down to $43.28 (lowest since 2009) and West Texas Intermediate is below $40 per barrel. We should see gas go below $2 a gallon.

And oil field workers now down 150,000 jobs and we're back on the Saudi tittie.  I hope cheap gas is worth it as we WILL pay for it in the future.

    Dave

Yeah people, I must include myself, love low gas prices hence low crude prices, not realizing nearly all pensions, 401's, mutuals have some energy related (oil companies) stock. Which off course take the big hit with these low prices. Take a look what Exon and Chevron have done lately - down and down further. Don't pay 'em now they ain't gonna pay you later - when you need it.

  4. A bit off subject but to the general topic in three decades working in manufacturing/engineering I can say without hesitation that cryoed cutting tools, regardless the material being cut metal, paper etc. tooling was much more durable after being treated. Although a relative expensive process it was easily documented the additional up time vs. cost was worth the expense.

And yes I have a few tubes, ac outlet and cable that are cryoed. Do they sound better? Don't know but having seen the process proved in other industries - why not?

  5. That is an interesting give and take. As ML continued toward the inherent advantage for high efficient speakers designs and an amps advantage at milliwatt outputs I thought hum, may be he designing something cost effective for the near-true audiophile. BUT then I looked ta his Daniel Hertz website - didn't take long to blow that hope clean out of the water! Speaker cabinets made by one the preeminent piano builders in the world, one of which required four amps for power. I think I'll save my email asking for pricing. I imagine pricing will be well over what the "normal" ML equipment had been priced at. High efficiency/low power for the - don't think so. ML is still catering the the ultra high end with a new mantra.

  6. My parents Zenith console. Wasn't aware at the time as a young kiddo but yep, tube powered. Turntable, tuner, full range speaker all in a '50's contemporary cabinet. It use to buzz and being maybe 10 yo, I just banged on the side thinking that would clear things up - never worked. Listened to the first Beatles album on that thing as my parents just shook their heads. Other than needing new tubes it is in near mint condition for its age. It now sits downstairs next to a KHorn. A family heirloom blast from the past.

  7. Thanks for the input fellas. DWLawyer I have decided I need a rtr like another ahole. After researching some of the provided sites I see that like many things hi end audio and very much like vinyl, the rtr world is way more expensive than what I would appreciate. Pre-recorded masters - good god they are pricy. More than what I would pay for the 707. I have spent a kings ransom the past 10-15 years buying/selling gear and while my rig appears small compared to the marvelous sets from Wardsweb, it does sound tremendous. I think I'll spend my money on something much more sensible/practical that the wife and grand kids can enjoy -- like a boat.!? (Please, please someone stop me, tell me no you're crazy, for I already know it is. Been there done that).

  8. You guys are killing me over here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't have a SET amplifier. All this talk really really makes me want to build one.

I feel I am wasting my tubes and power all to just create heat. I listen to music all day at low levels and am running either 10 or 11 tubes at a time. I would like to cut that down to half.

All the popular triodes are too expensive for my blood, so I would probably either strap a pentode or tetrode as a triode. I have looked at the 6C33C but they pull a ton of current. I will have to search around for cheap triodes that aren't fashionable.

If you listen all day and are concerned with heat and current draw, particularly Heat, I would shy from the 6c33. Along with pumpimg out great sound they pump lots of heat. How about a nice SE using the small EL84. I've heard some killer amps using that tube.

  9. All great input guys, thanks. Man the 402 looks massive and dwarfs the bass bin, no matter how it may sound it sure looks odd. And it seems the 510/KHorn bin aren't compatible. My Fastlane top hat uses a much larger horn than stock (bought the speakers from original owner and not sure what horn is used. There is a photo of my speakers as they were being restored by Dave which shows the mid horn,

maybe someone can identify? Original owner implied the horn was only one or two Dave specially designed for a KHorn restoration) With what has already been accomplished with my modded Horns leaving well enough alone might be the most practical. They sound stunning

  10. I am wondering about converting my current KHorns to a 2 way design to somehwat replicate a lesser Jubilee but extract the wider dispersion and less distortion of a much larger mid horn in a 2 way concept. My KHorns are already modded with Fastlane top hat and ALK extreme slope xovers AP12 and ES5800. The xovers have provision for converting to 2 way so my question is what horn/driver combination would work both accoustically and fitment wise to install on top of the KHorn bass bin. Would the stock k55 driver work with a specific mid horn or is a new driver mandated?

    Am I nuts?

  11. I have the opportunity to purchase a local (no shipping) lightly used, mint Pioneer RT 707.

From my research the only real downside to the unit is the 7.5 reels vs. the standard 10's. It is reputed to be one of the best sounding and ruggedly built decks of its day. But my reel (get it) question is - what would I do with the damn thing? Record - what? I have yet to check but can you buy high quality recorded tapes? Or it is so damn purdy just set it on the shelf to admire.

  12. In my experience with many SE tube amps powering every Heritage speaker it it more than just a high DB level you can push but rather the overall sound presentation. Yes a 2a3 amp at 2.5 watts will run all Heritage and rather loudly but overall sound will be "thin" when compared to amps with multiple times the power. Bass, depth of bass, controlling the woofer (particularly with Cornwall) are generally better produced with added power. I thought my SE 10 watt Dennis Had sounded great and does; I thought my SE 18 watt Almarro sounded better and it does but after many sessions my hybrid SS Valve Audio with over ten fold the power beats them all. Bass digs deeper and tighter, mid range is articulate and lightening quick and highs are smooth and crystal. Just cause you have a couple hundred watts doesn't mean you use them but the huge power supplies, caps and the like all contribute to the amps presentation. A few hundred dollars of preamp tubes hasn't hurt the effort either.

  13. The model Honda I mentioned in an earlier post is HRC 216. A commercial grade, steel decked, hydrostatic drive mower. It's a heavy beast. I cut a lot of grass so I change oil twice each season and after the last cut of the year. I let it run until the gas is out and it quits, put in fresh oil and in the barn she goes. Next spring 1 pull and I'm cutting grass. These things are built heavier duty but much like the very first Hondas in the US. I was told by more than one dealer that Honda overbuilt their first mowers to such a degree that they did no better than break even as they established the US. I had one of those and it was the bet mower I ever owned, until this one.
