  1. ok, I've read about "matched pairs". What exactly does that mean? What is being matched & how do they match it?

I presume that the matching has something to do with the volts/amps type thing, so if that's so, how much variation is there in these?

Do they measure the "matched item", write it down, take next tube, measure it, if the number is not "exact" or within a range, they write it down...keep doing that until they find one that matches each of those, then wa-la, a matched pair?

What sort of variances are there in the matching. Does adjusting the bias effect the matching at all?

    What does the biasing do?

Do you want to get ALL your tubes to be matched? (I have 4 KT-88's or equivilant) So if I replace them (or one of them) do I want to replace two pair, with matched pair, or would I rather find a matched FOUR set??

I gotta admit, I swapped out this new amp (Jolida 508B) which I know is not the most expensive by any stretch, but it sounds WORLDS better than the Yamaha I was using. The difference was immediately noticable. Now I'm trying to just better grasp the reality of tubes.

  2. THANK YOU Colter!!!

Now, with that point said... what "flavor" of surround, is the most complete (ie, most noticable gain in speakers/sound) without going "overboard"? (this is not to disparage anyone that has the multiple-mega super duper setup) I just think that at some point, ESPECIALLY if you are using the Heritage type stuff as many here do, you don't gain the incremental gain with the incremental cost.

  3. I'm in process of gathering bits & pieces 9.gif

Looking for ideas for CD/DVD player to buy. I guess it doesn't have to be DVD, since I already have one. I just kind of like the flexablity both formats offer.

That said, what I REALLY REALLY want feature wise, is multiple disk. I currently have a 5 disk and typically put 5 in and let it go.

I have a Sony brand, model eludes me right now, works fine, but I've read here about how a CD/DVD player might not play a CD as well as a more dedicated CD player might.

    Sooooooooooooo

Looking for suggestions on one with multiple disk capability. Brands/model numbers. I guess Mr. Budget is "around" $500 but if it's worthy, I can smack Mr. budget around some & make him shut up.

I'm mating it with a (yet to be received) Jolida 503B if I recall the number correctly. I will be spewing said sounds out of my newly acquired K-horns.

    Ideas?

    Thanks

  4. I just wanted to give a heads up.

I'm sure some, if not most here know Terry DeWick of DeWick repairs.

For those of you who don't, you can find him here http://www.statementaudio.com/ by clicking on Links and then Audio Refurbishers.

I just wanted to say publically for the benefit of those who do not know of Terry, that he is a VERY VERY VERY nice person, knocked out my 'fix' very quickly and for a very VERY reasonable price.

I'm tickled as can be that I have a local resource with his background. I have no affiliation with him whatsoever, other than being a 100% satisfied customer and I just wanted to spread the word.

Again, I'm sure many here know him, or of him. I just wanted to be sure something was said, just in case not

You don't have twice as many tubes. The main difference is a dedicated power supply for each channel. Of course, this can be done with one chassis, and be built into dual mono -- there's plenty of those around. As far as the balance issue goes, the same potential problems exist for tube stereo amps as mono amps.

    ----------------

So, is that a different way of saying that it makes "ZERO" difference if one get's a single stereo tube amp, verses two mono's??

I hope that's what you mean

  6. is there any specific benefit to having two mono amps, rather than one 2 channel amp?

What got me thinking this was the two (above referrenced) Mac amps on EBAY, the MC30's. As I looked at them, I just noticed double the tubes, double the power cords, double the maintainence, double the transformers... then imagined them in my system and one side playing louder/softer relative to the other side (something out of balance?)

Ultimately just wondered what the inherent benefits of single amps are, over a 2 channel (if any) Seems to me that a 30 watt 2 channel should do the same damage as two single 30's??

    ??

  7. I presume you know this since it's not rocket science, but "if you don't show it, they won't buy it"

Obviously, that's not literally true but the point I'm trying to make is just that simple. If you SHOW K-horns, seperates, (insert item), you are more likely to sell them, than if they are just a picture in an order book.

I once worked at home improvement store (smallest store in the city) After one year, I took the last place (in volume), Kohler Products seller to the highest volume seller. It was based primarily on non stocked, special orders. Why? Because I took the entire vanity section and stocked it with all the fancy Kohler lavatories and goodies. Now that the customers could come in and SEE what it looked like, they quickly said yes and ordered from the book since I didn't stock any. My boss gave me he** when I made the orders to stock my displays... then when I took the store to #1 in the company in that area, he had no choice, but to shut up 9.gif10.gif Vindication was sweet

  8. Dean, the room size, though currently in an unfinished state, is approximately 16 by (guessing) 24 with 9 ceilings.

Marvel, Im in Knoxville. Ive been to Statement Audio two times now with specific intent on talking to Tim as Ive been advised both here AND there. The first time, I had a tight time constraint and he was busy yapping on phone for 30 minutes while I waited, so I left. The next time (just last Friday) I went in, was told hell be here any moment now 10 minutes later, hell be here any moment now, 45 minutes later hell be here any moment now I waited just over an hour and had to git again.

Dodger: Im not sure I really understand the difference of a warm verses other sound. That said, when I hear a pipe organ I want the floor/walls to SHAKE with authority. When I hear a drum, I want my chest to feel it. When I hear a single delicate violin playing a soft ending passage I want to cry over it, well, maybe just sniffle.

Mike: I just might call you today if I get time

At the (unintended) risk of sounding like I'm trying to start a war...this is kind of what I'm looking for.

"What" (in your opinion of course) do you conisder better than Macintosh?

I've looked at their website, Jolida, conrad/johnson, cary Audio, and I belive a couple more that I can't currently think of.

What I hear is tube "abc" is better (for lack of better word) than "xyz", then someone else loves "xyz" for different reasons...

for someone who knows abosolutely *nothing* about tubes, how they work, how their designed, how they sound, what I fear is wondering into this foray blind... and ending up with a "bose'ish" type tube amp... one that had I just known a bit better, I might have not done.

again, Mr. Budget is always a concern, but I was really hoping people would name more names so I could do more research. I mean, it's kind of difficult to learn about brands, when you dont know any names?

As a partial clarifier, I do not know ANYONE that has tubes and I know even fewer that have Klipsch, let alone, K-horns 2.gif so leaning on a friend unfortunately, isn't an option...

Wow, thank you. I was surprised to see my name/room mentioned. Kind of shocked anyone really noticed.

You DO know that the wife gets all the credit though (and she wants the K-horns OUTTA there asap & downstairs)

I'll add that this guys room strikes me as lonely/steril also.

I'd bet he drives a cool car though... perhaps a 1 seater?

    1.gif

  11. It's all Brap's fault for letting me hear his tube setup with the K-horns I got from him... ya... his fault.

Ok, the more I listen to my K-horns with my ss, the more I think I "get it" regarding difference in sound. I only heard his tube amp for maybe an hour max and I know I'm not getting that kind of sound from them.

Since the speakers were not in corners at his house (but the chair WAS at optimal placement relative to speakers) and at my house the speakers ARE in corners (but no chair at optimal location) I'm left to conclude that the flatness of their sound has got to be because of my ss stuff.

I wont buy anything without learing about it first (call me anal) and so I'm trying to read about tube stuff.

    My wish list:

    1. (listen to rock & roll) want to be able to crack some paint with volume every now & then

    2. Want the bass to be SOLID and absolutly participating

    3. Want remote control

    4. Stronly prefer integrated but would consider seperate

    5. Want it to play the classical stuff I listen to with aplomb

    6. Although I liked the looks of exposed tube, it's not necessary

    7. I want replacement tubes to be easily obtained

    8. I PREFER US made, even if I pay more (we GOTTA support ourselves and I'm willing to do my share)

If I was going to buy it for YOU as a X-mas gift, and you had the above criteria, what brand/model would you look at? I don't want to say "money no object" because it always is, but at least for a STARTING point, let's say it.

Oh, and I'm not necessarily against used either...

Just for record, what I'm noticing with my SS is a very flat soundstage. I feel like I'm listening to the speakers, rather than a soundstage in front of me. Brap played some interesting drum solo for me and you could just "see" the drummer in front of you hitting his various drums to the left/right. I don't sense any depth like that as I'm currently setup

Sigh... he's ruined me for life... my ignorance has been exposed/enlightened and it's all his fault (and much appreciated too)

  12. I've heard how quiet/dynamic tubes are over ss, fine.

Then I read this on a review site

**I have a modest collection of amplifiers and preamps. The best pairing is a solid state Marantz 7T Preamp and tube based Conrad Johnson MV-75A1 both updated with modern high performance resistors and capacitors. The Klipschorns are not kind to noisy tubes or transistor circuits and the updates to these pieces make for an extremely quiet background. The solid state plus tube pairing also provides a warm, highly dynamic presentation.**

I'm confused and I'm hoping someone can point me to "Tubes for dummies 101"

If you have a pre-amp, amp and say, CD player, what is best combonation?

TUBE pre-amp mated with tube power amp?

SS pre mated with tube amp?

SS all the way? (already read here that's not the best)

Can buy an integrated all tube amp?

Can I buy an integrated SS AND tube amp?

    What are some brand names?

I've read about the 300B tube, well...so what? lol, I mean, what "IS" the 300B and what does it do, relative to the 199W ? (I just made up the 199W)

Does a tube amp have a single tube that is "dedicated" to low/mid/high section? (meaning, 3 tubes like a 3 way speaker)

Does a tube amp have a single tube for FULL range?

Geez, the more I scratch the surface of tubes, the more I see how ignorant I am

    Here's where I am :Confused

Here's where I'd like to be if I ever get a tube setup: I'd like to get a tube that might go to 100 wpc, just in case I want to irritate my neighbors 3.gif, I'd like it to be deadly quiet as I hear is their trademark, I'd want it to be as musical as any with all the afformentioned accuracy, warmth, blah blah blah, that I've read about tubes. I'd want it to be able to PUNCH with the bass (I read where some tubes are better than others evidently?) And of course, if it can look cool and cost under $100 ]

Ok, I'm joking about the $100 part.

So, does the above exist and if it does, what do I look for? Meaning, do I look up the 300B or do I need a 600B (made that up again)

I'm just starting to get a minimum grasp on this stuff, so pardon me for asking what might be such rudimentary quesitons. Before one can ask a reasonabley intelligent question, one must know at least SOME of the answer. As I yet know none of the answer, it leaves me open to babble on in a meandering way while I try to figure this out. (need any more proof?)

    2.gif

  13. What's the most recommended setup? 5.1, 7.1, 4,345.1 2.gif

I ask because I have an older yamaha 7.1 system (I think it has the .1)

I've heard about rear center, sides... when is enough enough?

I can hear it now... "Yes Wife... I DO need 4 K-horns, 1 for each corner, oh, I also need 4 Lascalas/Belles for front center, rear center & sides... oh and the front effects means I need yet two more. Yeah I know wifey...the room is only 10x10, that's why I wear my hearing protection when I have it turned on. 3.gif

ok, so seriously, if one is working from scratch, what is the best HT TYPE of system (meaning 4.5, 5.1, other...)??

    thanks

  14. Hey Brad, I meant to call you today but was inundated with having to catch-up from being gone to your place, and to Vegas prior to that.

They did arrive home unscathed, other than the moisture spot on one of them that has seemed to have disappeared. (the one nearest trailer door had the damp spotdarn that rain anyway)

Not picked up anything yet. Ive been hankering (dang, there I go againhankeringthats what got me into this in the beginning) lol

Anyway, Ive been hankering on going to the McIntosh dealer here that evidently is the tube store and try to find out more. I think its best to do baby steps with the wife on this.

I think I experienced some of that ssssing on my ss setup. I dont recall the name of the harsh ss but I heard some harshness on some stuff, not all.

Oh, and with the volume at idle, the hissing noise I spoke of? Using my old Yamaha CR2040 receiver (120x2) its darn near dead quiet. I in fact, put the throttle to 100% with no cd playing and it was still, dead quiet. Perhaps I have a nice/quiet amp? I know using my HT Yamaha 2080 (or what ever the proper number is) my Lascalas had a CLEAR hiss that doesnt seem there at all, when using the receiver. I heard it on some disks but then realized its probably on the disk itself.

Ty for the compliment, gracious of you.

Oh, and I had a setting on my camera messed up, caused a blue tint on every picture I took WITH a flash. I figured it out tonight.

Im also curious, what the CD was with Sinatra in the pub with the dishes clanking? I have told several people about that and how cool I thought it was.

  15. Fini: We have a log house using square cut 6x12 logs. In between are 4x4s. We will ultimately ***** in between the logs and that will have the look you are probably accustomed to seeing with logs. The wifey didnt want a traditional log look, so she whitewashed the logs using diluted paint. The outside has a stain on it that is a semi-transparent Blueshadow color. It sort of looks like battleship gray

Mike: The watermark seemed to just evaporate out and now I dont see it. If and when these DO go into the basement, it will be on a tile floor over concrete. The walls are block walls w/poured concrete inside. (then Ill drywall the actual interior surface).

The downstairs room is something like 16 wide by roughly 24 I think. Been while since Ive measured. Nine foot ceilings.

  16. seems you must attach file first, then type? 15.gif I just lost my comment.

Ok.. I was right, she did NOT like them 6.gif I was given an ultimatom to get the (currently unfinished) basement done in 30 days or she's having them put into storage 6.gif

I take that as a positive as she never went for the chainsaw, claw hammer, or file. She did however, have an uneasy gleam in her eye when she had the drill in her hand, asking me where the 4" hole bit was....4.gif

Here's a before (if this works)

    post-15072-13819259470364_thumb.jpg

  17. Just got the K-horns home last night and a friend is due over today to help lug them in.

Sat in trailer and of course, it rained all way home. Seems some moisture has wicked inside and created a damp spot about the size of a closed fist on the left edge of the bass bin about mid way up.

He's due over anytime now to help carry them in...any suggestions I might do about the damp spot (concerned about it staining/other)??

Do I just let it air dry and oil? Since it's been oiled, do I not worry about it?? Do I pull out my 6" belt sander 6.gif (ok, rest your heart, that was just a cruel joke)

Seriously though, it's a fresh spot, anything I might do "now" to mitigate anything or am I making a mountain out of an ant hill??

    Thanks for any responses.
