  1. I think those are mine Travis....I got a package today without the professional marking... Wink

That's cool that they gave you unpainted 402's....how's your painter dude going to get all the way inside the throat?

Ahhh Ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I knew there was a mistake, they should have sent the professional stuff to the professional and not to me.

As far as paint inside the throat, I don't have any idea. That's why I have a painter dude, so he can worry about it and figure it out. Then Luther makes sure the Painter dude did in fact really figured it out. However, I understand it is a very high end autobody place so I would figure they have a long specialized sprayer to reach these types of areas. If not, I guess there is always Krylon, no runs no drips no errors.

  2. Forget filling the holes, cut the butt-ugly flanges off those monsters before painting.

    Greg

    Greg,

I might end up sending them to you to see what you can do it terms of dressing them out. I am also considering having Luther's friend in Burbank, CA, with a giant CNC machine, make a pair of solid wood 402 horns, identical to the original (yes including the bumps, and yes I have a license). The price is quite, quite expensive to do that, however. But I don't need to tell you any of that. I am having trouble coming up with ideas on how to finish them out other then to paint them with high quality paint.

If you try and trim them in wood it seems like you are just accenting their massive size.

  3. Today 4 giant boxes arrived at my house. However, there must be a mistake. On the side of each box is a large logo saying "Klipsch Professional." I know there must be some mistake because I'm only an amateur. Is someone else out there expecting a delivery from Klipsch? Did someone get my speakers by mistake? There they sit in the garage for now until we can figure out what the mixup is, or, find a "Professional" to set them up.
    More to follow.

  4. How are the raw plywood edges going to get trimed out?

Excellent question. Luther is thinking either black, to add some contrast, precut matching veneer in 3/4' strips, or a contrasting wood veeneer. We are thinking, going strictly from the photos at this point, that black will make an excellent contrast. However, it is obviously going to depend on how the bass bins end up.

I also need to pick a color for the 402 horns, they are "raw" which means they are going to look similar to frosted glass. They will be painted in Sherman Williams Automotive Laq., by a professional automotive finisher. This is the same finish that Klipsh uses to paint them black, but I will be going with some sort of dark hued earth tone.

  5. Congratulations Travis, I could'nt be happier for you. Enjoy man!

With the wood they are being constructed with, I would give some serious consideration to Teak Oil. See if Roy or someone could send you a couple scraps from the cut for testing purposes. I have a sneaking suspicion that would be the ticket.

    Jorjen,

Good to hear from you, it has been awhile. Actually, I was thinking about teakoil and in fact there is a teakoil/tung oil blend that is on the market. Roy sent me 4 6" x 6" double sided "off fall" (that's what they call scrap at Klipsch) so teak and teak/tung will for sure be in the sample mix.

  6. You sure are patient to wait a year ! ! ! They say good things come to those who wait though and I betcha the new more rigid design will sound several % better.

Patient, not at all. I told Roy to take his time on them and not worry about rushing them through. I knew all of the headaches and time it was going to take on his part to even get everyone at Klipsch to sign off on them. I am quite sure I owe Chuck a bottle on something in this regard. I knew he was really going out on a limb to get them done and I also knew going in that it was going to take a considerable amount of time.

On the sound part, my understanding is that the sound could NOT be different with the new design and cut list. It apparently has a particualr voicing that cannot be messed with and so the new bins with the bracing had to be tested in the chamber to make sure there was no difference in terms of the sound. However, the changes have, I believe, resulted in lower resonance which is for sure a plus.

I don't know all of the details about the changes, in terms of construction, differences, etc. Roy is in a much better position to address the specifics. I have tried to keep up with the differences in general, but a lot has slipped by.

  7. I am getting them. I was going to order them in raw birch and then get Wardsweb to have them done in real piano laq black, but then I got the idea of having them done in exotic plywood. Through Roy's efforts, he was able to determine that African Mahogny (Sapele) plywood was available and that he was going to try and get everyone at the factory to sign on to it. (Apparently it takes a several signatures to get approval on something custom). So as of today, everything has been okee dokeed and I am on the way to getting DCR Jubilees in raw African Mahogny.

I will be getting the 402's raw, unpainted, having the holes filled in and then painted in high grade auto laq paint. Not sure on the color of that at this point.

I am going with the DX-38 crossover for right now and see where that goes. I am also looking at swhtching out the K69 dirvers with the TAD Be drivers.

I NEED SOME SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT TO OIL THE RAW SAPELE WITH WHEN THEY GET HERE. At least I am pretty sure I want to do an oil finish.

Once we get everything set up I am going to schedule a Klipsch/Jub Fest at the house.

I am really excited for their arrival. I have had the opportunity to hear them several times in Hope, in very controlled situations, in exactly the configuration I will have in my media room and can't wait to hear them in place.

    Travis

    Hey Travis,

    Seen any new Jubs lately?

    Chris

    Why Chris,

Yes I have as a matter of fact. I know it is about 10 month later, but I have in fact been advised that the Elves in Hope have been mightely busy his past month. Exotic plywood Jubes turned out to be a major undertaking for Roy. He came up with a slightly new design which adds cross bracing (seen in the attached photos) which resulted in a new cut list. I believe approximately 3 or 4 prototypes had to be made and tested. These are not prototypes in the sense that something had to be made from scratch, tested, tossed out, redesigned, etc. It was more a case of tweeking the assembly order and instructions. As a result Roy was able to shave several hours off of the build time, yet has a more rigid bass bin.

The bad news about this is that it was such a major headache that, per Roy, this will be the only set they will make in exotic plywood. However, the GOOD news is that folks who want an exotic wood center panel can now get that as an option from the factory. Kudret's were the first pair with this option and served as the final "test pair" before mine were built.

The pictures attached show the bass bins that are in raw African Mahogony (Sapele). At this point they were getting ready to be send for finish sanding and then final assembly. I will receive them in raw form I will finish them with the help of Luther (wardsweb). Roy sent me several scrap pieces of the wood so what we can do some testing with various oils and finishes to see what my wife Kelly likes the best. (Did you know there is an official word for scrap wood not used from the 4 x 8 sheets? I sure as heck didn't know there was).

I will keep you up to date on the progress, when they arrive, and photos of the finishing.

More to follow later, in the meantime, here are a few photos of DCR-KHJ-LF-AMR 001 and 002 at the factory in Hope.

  8. I just had both of my KSP 400 Amps serviced by Klipsch and they did a fantastic job. Both Amps were dead, did a whole bunch of trouble shooting myself to not avail, sent to Klipsch and both are perfect now.

I have now explanation for the speakers not having any output after the cross-over being bypassed. What kind of music/signal is going to the amp. I am sure you are sending something that is low enough in frequency, but had to ask. I don't recall right off hand what the specs of those side firing woofers are and so can't picture what should be coming through with an full range signal.

But can you help me with something? With the lower plate (speaker terminal connections) removed, the one that gives you access to the woofer, can you tell me what color wire was attached that was closest to you and what color wire was furtherest away from you? Are they the same for both speakrs? Are your connection terminals that are on the woofer itself in the 12 o'clock position?

    Thanks in advance,

    Travis

  9. Thanx for the input..The x-2000r that I have is fine mechanically but I am having a problem with recording I have to turn the levels all the way up and even then it's broken up and distorted. The main problem is that I have nobody locally to service it, I would prefer NOT to ship it. The X-1000r that is for sale locally is $350 I believe that is a good deal.

$350.00, if it is in good cosmetic and working condition is an excellent deal.

  10. Mark, that picture you use for your avitar I have copied and use it as one of the pictures I rotate from time to time as a backround on the computer screen, this another.

Where and when was the "Listen Up" photo taken?

    Travis

  11. I have an X-1000R, you will be very happy with it. The X-2000 does indeed have different heads, but it also came in differenct variations, high speed, etc.

What is the cost of reprair to X-2000 you have? What is the problem(s) with. About what can you get the X-1000 for? What part fo the country are you located in?

  12. I am going to continue to provide full and complete warranty support for all the products out there, so there should be no concern for anyone using the products now. I'm only stopping new production of the product line. The web site will be here for ahwile, but I am removing the PayPal purchase buttons on most items. (We still have a demo Peach II, for example)

Why am I not surprised to see this quote in Mark's post on his website. With just about everyone else I would be freaking out if I saw "(insert the name of your favorite high-end audio equipment you recently purchased) going out of business." But with Mark I just knew he would stand behind his stuff. I have to figure out a way to get him to work with me on some AMP's. I am just really glad I got to business with a class guy with a class product.

Grasshopper if you get tired of the auto industry maybe I can work on the funding of a buyout of JM and you can take over the business.

Yo Craig, you better higher a helper dude.

It is funny, I watched the Majestic this weekend and if of course reminded me of Mark. I hope I can get back out that way soon one of these days.

  13. I have heard Khorns, Jubes, Avant Garde Duo's and Magico Ultimates.

I would say the Ultimates are by far and away the best horn speakers I have ever heard, the best speakers I have ever heard period. However, they are not very practical and unrealistically expensive.

Next woud be the Jubes, and then the Avantgarde's, followed by the K-horns.

  14. Many of my forum buds have sat in this chair. Even one person (who shall remain nameless) tumbled backwards as the bed risers gave way.Surprise You can see from the picture that I elevate the chair in an attempt to sit level with the mid horn. The risers, stolen from my daughter's dorm room, actually serve their purpose rather well.

I have sat in that chair, and it is incredible. I don't remember the risers though, maybe that will avoid the necessity of having to sit lightly forward in the chair because of my height. Gary did you add the risers on the second day? I sure could never tell.

That chair ties the whole room together.

  15. AC/DC - any one of their albums. I like mostly their earlier stuff especially when Bon Scott was the lead singer but even after his passing in 1980 they were/are still fantastic. and to this day their songs are still played in bars all over Australia and they still rock on.

The best Rock group that ever was and is anywhere in the world IMHO. I know I am going to get hammered for that massive bold statement.

I love 'em, they are the best Scottish rock band of all time and have the greatest rock song with bag pipes in my opinion.

I'm 48, and it has been hard to bet folks to go with me to shows on their latest tour here in the US. I'm even planing on catching them in their native Scotland for their Glasgow show.

  16. Mine's a glider with a lot of miles on it. You probably can't tell but the back pad is supplemented by two sound pads pulled from the innards of a Kg 5.2.

It's handy because by utilizing the gliding function you can add more reverb to rock and roll guitars.

I have sat in that chair and can attest that it truly is a great sweetspot. The perfect place to enjoy a cup of Salada.

  17. Well yea, you, but judging by your well written post you probably still have most of your sanity (can't have al if you are hanging around here).

But what about the guy in the second video? He probbaly never listens to his record because (1) it may wear out the grooves, (2) he does not have time to listen because all of his free time is spent cleaning records, and (3) he cannot afford a turntable because he has a $300 a day "habit" consisting of gallons of Record Research Cleaning fluids and imported duterion water where his picks the extra oxygen out by hand before shipping it to New Jersey to have Harry Weisfeld bless it in a ceremony.

    Now that was funny.

The second guy for sure never listens to his records. After he finishes with that 12 step process, he puts his lp's in his $2,000 lp demagnatizer (http://www.musicdirect.com/product/73520) only to discover they are dusty requiring a repeat in the steam bath.
