  1. There are some Dynaco Mk. II's are for sale in my area for $250.00. Was wondering if anyone had any thoughts about the mods he discussed, the price, etc. The description is as follows in blue:

Completely rebuilt, excellent condition. The rebuild consisted of solid state rectification (full wave bridge) for the plate supply; the plate voltage now runs about 575v. I have dual 450uFd Mepco electrolytic caps in series to accommodate the higher plate voltage, so the total capacitance for the plate supply is 225uFd, substantially higher than the 15uFd stock multi cap. The bias supply has been beefed up with more filter capacitance and full wave rectification. All of the power for the input pentode and triode phase splitter (7199 tube) is separate from the output supply, again more filter capacitance. All supply caps have been bypassed with polystyrene caps and the signal path uses Resista resistors and Wonder caps all assembled with Wonder Solder. I eliminated the multi terminal strip in favor of single binding posts connected to the 4 ohm tap on the transformer, but this can be changed to accommodate other speaker impedances. I also have a heavy power switch located on the front of the unit for convenience. As far as the cages go, I have to look. I never used them because I thought it ran too hot and it looks cool to see the tubes anywayJ. The output tubes and VTL KT-99 and bias current is low at 30ma per tube. They work great it is just that my 2 year old daughter is way too curious and that could be really badL.

The amps work and sound great and have been absolutely reliable for the last fifteen years and basically everything I did was the best available at the time.

My thought was to get these to play with while I have some work done on my Mac Tube Amps, and then when I get those back maybe send these to Craig for an overhaul.

Thanks in advance for your input.

  2. Joe,

Two Virgins, in near mint condition, books for $150.00.

As far as fakes, Introducing the Beatles has been counterfited so much that it is difficult to list all of the things to look for.

Main things are, "Introducting the Beatles" should all be above the center hole. If "The Beatles" appears below the center hole, it's a fake. If the color green is missing from the rainbow VJ label, it is a fake. Then it gets more complex about whether it has an oval, vs. brackets logo, stereo vs. mono to know if it is fake or not.

  3. Congratulations Patrick!!!!

I know you have been searching quite awhile for those babys. Whoever you have look at those amps be very careful. You should be able to find a number of good mac techs who know what they are doing in L.A., or if you get up to the Bay Area much there are a couple. My preference has always been to find someone that says they can keep it "original" as possible, or "well they don't make those caps anymore and NOS are impossible to find, but in my experience X sounds exactly the same." Start to worry when they start talking about super expensive resistors, capacitors, etc. These "mods" can compleatly alter the sound of those amps. Most good Mac tube equipment techs will know this and their selling point will be that they are going to keep it original for you. A good tech will also tell you that they will look for any previously replaced components and determine whether they are appropriate or not. Half the battle in purchasing Mac tube stuff is finding a unit that has not been worked on, you know it is going to cost some money to get it up to specs, but at least the tech is going to work from a known starting point.

I can't wait to see a post from you entitled "Hooked up MC30's Today" and the thrill I know you are going to have hearing them on your system. Again, congrats,

  4. I loved looking at everyone's 2 Channel Setups in the thread that is still going strong and it got me to thinking about a couple of things:

No Disc, I have been thinking about having my cabinet maker doing a custom cabinet what is similar to the one you have your TT on along, where did you get yours, if you had it made do you have any suggestions or something you would have done differently, what isolation platform do you have under your TT and are you happy with it, what on earth are all of those brass harmonic dampeners you have everywhere, or are those dampers?

Doctorcilantro has a wall mounted platform which I have been strongly considering, I don't have wood floors but my A/V room is up stairs and movement on the floors seems to transfer across the whole room. Doc, which mount do you have, where did you get it, what isolation platform are you using with it, what did you pay, happy with it?

Shapeshifter, you have an isolation platform under your TT which I noticed is every close to your K-Horn. I was wondering which platform you use and does it work even at mid/high volume being so close to the right speaker.

3dZapper, what A/V racks are those, did you fill with lead or sand, are you happy with those for that beautiful Bellagio?

Guy Landau: Nice looking rack, the shelves look adjustable. What brand is it, where did you get it, pay, etc.? Same questions for Codhead's rack, if you know.

I would love to hear from anyone about a turntable racks they have been happy with, or isolation platforms that have worked well, and of course, anything that they found not to have worked or worth the money.

Thanks to crazytubepower for starting a great thread and stiring my imagination and curiosity. Thanks in advance for your responses to the above questions.

  5. Gary, Allen and all other vinyl lovers,

Have you purchased any of the 45 RPM reissues. I have several (From Music Direct, Accoustic Sounds, etc.) and have really liked what I have heard so far. Just was wondering what your thoughts were when you had the option of getting a reissue in 33 or 45 (at usually twice the price)

  6. Patrick,

If you ever find a pair in on Ebay in Texas, (Austin, Dallas, Houston, etc.) let me know, I will go look at them if I can, do a local pickup for you (escrow), or anything else I can do to help you out (except sell you mine).

B&K seems to make GREAT gear at great prices ($3300 for their 7.1 receiver, for example)

Krell makes good stuff, and their name sells. Very $pendy.

McIntosh is awesome, but VERY expensive and the 'hip' crowd might not like the looks (I LOVE it)

The first thing I would want to know is what converters and processor are in the Krell or B&K you are considering. The Mcintosh MX135 has a 24/192 DACS. Also the analog to digital to converter is 24/192 The MX135 is based largely upon the C-45 multi-channel pre-amp that was a runner-up for Stereophile pre/amp of the year. Lastly the MX135 is running the Motorola Aerius chip which is going at 1.2 billion instructions per second. I think that gives it the the most powerful dsp chip of any pre/pro currently on the market. That's the basics in terms of making sure that they compare in their ability to play the software.

However, what's most important is how each sounds with YOUR speakers in YOUR home. I know my Mac dealer will allow me (and I am nobody special) to demo any piece of Mac equipment in my home for a week or so before I decide to purchase it. My understanding is that most Mac dealers are the same way, and that is for good reason: they know if you get it home you are never going to want to bring it back, and you are not going to want anything else.

Of course what really matters is

  8. Alan,

Alright, at least two other Bookers fans on this forum.

No I meant, 10 essential for you. If you were forced to get of everything you own, which 10/25 would be essential for YOU keep, forgetting value, collectability, i.e., based soley on the music, performance, sonics, etc.

  9. Try the U.S. Dept. of Transportation website, and look under common carrier or shipments. I had to look this up for a client awhile back when he received a damaged 10,000 flat screen HDTV. My recollection is they cannot limit their liability in the fashion you described. I beleive that USDOT website tells you what a shipper can, and cannot get away with. They can be limit their liability for damage, but it is difficult if they lose the whole thing.

Additionally, it was good advice not to cash the check. However, there is language you can use to endorse the check which will not limit your rights, etc. Let me know if you need help on this.
