  1. So, have any of you guys found a nice tweeter that could replace a K-77 in heresy speakers? If so, are there any that could fit in the cabinet, or at least be easy enough to install on the exterior? Also, they would have to have around 96db efficiency, or be attenuated such via the crossover. I really want to upgrade my high frequency-
  2. I have tried cutting the midrange down, in addition to the tweeter, and found the results to be unsatisfactory. I'm not quite sure what the perfect balance point for heresy I is, but the tweeter is certainly too loud. Also, I find the K-55 midrange to be a much better sounding speaker than the K-77 tweeter in general, so it's nice to have the midrange stick out a little more:) So far I haven't done any experiments with damping, but I think heresy's sound great so long as you take that tweeter down 3db.
  3. What's the fuss about all of this perceived loudness? The key word here is "modality". The way one person responds to a stimulus is never going to be exactly the same as another. There is no way to measure which increase in sound pressure is twice as loud simply because twice as loud is impossible to define in such a generalized manner:)
  4. There seems to be a lot of topics covering the attenuation of heresy I tweeters, and their midrange drivers as well. Are they both 3db above the woofer in their stock positions? Are any modifications to the crossover absolutely necessary if one were to take both of these drivers down one tab on the autotransformer, or for two tabs? What I mean by this is, are there any significant changes that would change the quality of sound for better or worse (besides attenuation). Just curious:)
  5. I do have the speakers placed on the floor, and do not have risers for them. Could this be the problem here? The eq seems to be doing a fine job anyways, though. My way of calibration: I played a 1k tone and changed my receiver's volume until I achieved a 100spl reading. Then, without touching the volume on my receiver, I tested out specific tones (400hz, 450 hz, 500 hz, ex.) and compared them with the spl at the 1khz tone. I only seem to have a dip in that specific range, where there is fluctuation elsewhere in the whole spectrum, it is not as severe. And no, I have not done tests while playing 'all frequencies', just singular frequency tests. Maybe I should just get my hands on a pair of risers:)
  6. Thats exactly what I was referring to. The control frequency of 1khz was set to 100 db. The range of 400-700 hz seems to all be down at an average of 6 db (94 db), and goes back up closer to 100db underneath that freq. range. (ex. there is a dip in that specific range, compared to the whole audio spectrum). Just because a frequency is 'an octave lower than 1khz', it does not mean that is should measure any quieter in spl. Our ears are just less sensitive to those frequencies. At least, that is what my logic is telling me. Afterall, if lower frequencies were to produce lower spl than higher frequencies, the term 'flat frequency response' wouldn't make any sense. It would be a y=x slope:) Correct me if I am wrong, anyone.
  7. Strange. I picked up a spl meter and did some graphs. Oddly enough, my woofer is down about 6 db in the 400-700 hz range, when playing at 100db (at 1k). Simply using an eq seems to really help things out though. If I were to attenuate both the mid and tweeter (to hear the woofer more), I would probably end up with an excess of db in the sub-300hz region. I have no idea how the room acoustics factor in this particular area, but the eq seems to be doing the job!
  8. Anybody here know about this? For some reason, eq-ing my speakers up about 4 db centered at the 500hz region seems to make the sound much fuller. Guitars, bass, and voice sound much 'fuller'. Maybe this is just personal preference. I have no way of testing since I do not own a spl meter, tsk tsk. Would setting the midrange and tweeter 1 notch down on the transformer cause any serious problems? I think I'm gonna see how that sounds, just for kicks.
  9. Yeah this is old news, but I just tried that attenuating mod for the heresy I tweeter, and it sounds excellent! The sound is just so much more balanced now. Is there any difference between connecting the neg. tweeter line directly to tap 2 vs. connecting to the neg. squawker portion of the crossover?? Damn these speakers sound great now... cool!
  10. Thanks to Bob for the new diaphragms, my speakers now sound tight in the HF again. Time to crank up some Iron Maiden!
  11. A plyers is a wise choice, indeed:) Once I got the other tweeter taken apart I noticed that the leads were not soldered or glued in any way... so maybe that's a problem. Anyways, I'm going to be trying out some new diaphragms pretty soon. Hopefully this will remedy all those migraines caused by all of that high frequency tomfoolery of my heresy's.
  12. I believe that this may be the case for me. I took apart one of the tweeters very carefully, and noticed that the leads coming off of the diaphragm (that connect to those 'eyelets' was extremely short and did not apart to be secured in anyway.. Maybe the other tweeter is the same. I currently can't get the stupid thing seperated because one of the screws on the magnet have the head totally torn up from the last owner. Once I find a plyers my problem should be solved. I'm just wondering if I should order some new diaphragms or a kit.. still thinking here. Those leads are just chinsy as hell looking on that diaphram.
  13. well, I'm using a 'surgepro' surge and noise protector, it's a GE product. I figured this would do the job, but correct me if I'm wrong:) There doesnt appear to be any corrosion in the crossover connections... I could always swap in some new cap's and see what happens. Soldering isn't very tricky, but I honestly have no idea of how using different capacitors would change the sound very much.
  14. Yeah, I've tried about 3 or 4 different amps (all solid-state though) and it will still have a really 'bitey and irritating' top range. I've tried a vintage hk, new yamaha power amp, and a denon. I can almost swear I remember these speakers sounding much smoother 8 months ago or so.. If I listen to music with an abundance of high's, such as portishead or aphex twin, I am just disgusted at times. Any other frequency range sounds full, warm, detailed, etc.
  15. Heresy I, crossover type E. Tweeter is K-77 alnico.
  16. My bad, now I remember they tested somewhere around 6 ohms (11 was the midrange). What problems could be occuring with the crossover to cause this? Would replacing the capacitors do anything perhaps? I'm just a little suspicious since it seems to be occuring in the exact same way in both speakers, and I have tried different amps. The high range just seems to generally make me very irritated/ uncomfortable, especially at louder volumes, it's hard to explain. My roomate had also noted that the high range was notably 'in-your face and snarly at extreme freq. points' when he listened to it.
  17. Just a little clarification : if I am listening to the tweeters seperately, I notice that the higher pitch sounds, such as cymbals and "s"'s are rather snarly and irritating, yet the lower pitch noises coming from the tweeters sound fine and undistorted...
  18. Is it possible to have blown K-77 tweeters while they still give a proper resistance reading (10-11)? They are 'functioning', but something doesnt sound right. I can recall them sounding better a few months back, but maybe I'm hallucinating... It is sounding rather snarly. Anyways, if you guys think they are blown, how can I go about fixing these? Just swapping in some new diaphragms??Hmmmmmm
  19. Talking Heads- Stop Making Sense is great!
  20. I just picked up a HK630 for $60 bucks and it sounds just amazing on my heresy I's. Sounds better than my $500 yamaha integrated, hands down. What's the diff between the 630 and 430? I think mine is 30 wpc, but I may be wrong..
  21. I'm gonna ****** it up! I shall post a review after giving it a good audition:P
  22. Is this a good deal? This is the pricing for one at a local thrift store, looks brand new and powers up. I wanted to try this out with my heresy's after hearing the good comments..
  23. Do you have any pics of the speakers without the grills on? They look like regular models to me from the pictures.
  24. My webcam is a piece of junk but this will give you a good idea. Could you send a pic of yours?
  25. '76 or '77. How does your cabinet differ from the regular models? I could take a pic of mine with my webcam perhaps.
