  1. 20 year old $1500 LS will be due for upgrades for sure. Plan on spending more to bring the sound up to snuff.
  2. I'm not surprised at the results.
  3. Dean, Craig suggested I buy a pair of his VRD's. Are those SET? I have no idea. I told him that if I went tube, it would need some real power. After a very pleasant chat on the phone, he implied that I had a pretty good set up as is. He's right, my stuff sounds real, real good. I got to thinking about this cone thing from him bringing it up. He thinks that as you guys change the guts of your speakers with mods and crap, and fool around with vinyl and tubes, you end up with very cone like sounding speakers. Hence, my original question. He's a fun guy to talk to.
  4. dunno, but you can make horns sound like cones Dean, I'm not making any changes soon and I never mentioned 3 watts
  5. I've noticed that for sure. At higher volumes I just shut the sub off, although my Hsu will keep up.
  6. Many of you spend all your time and money trying to make your Klipsch speakers sound like cone speakers. Why bother? Wouldn't it be easier to just buy nice cones in the first place and leave the unmodified Klipsch sound to us guys that like the raw, live edge? Think about it-
  7. Hmm, you may have a point there. Anyway, what tubed amp and preamp do you suggest I buy from YOU to make my LS all that they can be? I'm serious, I think I'm in the mood to try some tubes. Let's say $2000-3000 for the pair, very adequate power (none of this 20 watt stuff), something to give me the sweetness of tubes and the slam of SS. I'll keep my HSU sub and Rega cdp for now. What'cha got for me NOS?
  8. Take an honest poll and you'll find most LS owners run a sub. That's just the way she goes.
  9. I can't argue that with most music they do fine without a sub. However, I'm happier with a sub than not. It just seems to give an overall warmth to the music, and I love hearing those deep notes. To me it's worth it to have one, and I don't consider it a weak link in the system. Note I said "system", not "speakers". It's pretentious to say the LS is better with, or without a sub.
  10. Not true. Only if you set the sub wrong. Mine is set to cut in when needed. Your obvious disdain of subs is all fine and well, but to pay them no credence is foolish. Have a drink.
  11. No one believes me but my British Rega amp, preamp, and cdp sound fabulous with my LaScalas. Almost tube like. They retail for $1000 each piece, but I weaseled mine for about $2500 new for the three. Rega doesn't advertise or toot their horn, so they are relatively behind the scenes. I love their stuff.
  12. You will still need a subwoofer if you want righteous bass.
  13. Your flattery plan here is transparent. forgetaboutit, flattery has nuthin to do with it. treating her like crap is just low class. go ahead and throw a snide remark now... it's your cue
  14. you should lighten up on Amy she's got an unenviable job and it doesn't help when guys like you peck away at her
  15. j-malotky, I might be interested in the stiffener idea. Any plans out there? Pictures?
  16. For $1500 less than the new LSII's, it sure makes sense to me to keep the originals in the line up. The fancy veneer doesn't mean that much to me, so I'm more than happy with my originals. Some will say the new 1" mdf material or whatever they're now made of gives a bit more bass, but I use a sub anyway, so the tiny bit of extra bass with the new model is a moot point. Run what'cha brung.
  17. My right channel LaScala is within 6" of a baseboard (not forced air) heater in my living room (temperature is usually around 70 degrees). That's just where it has to stay. Should I be concerned with the wood drying out eventually and delaminating, or worse? Any suggestions, or am I worrying for not.
  18. Thanks for the encouraging words Jeff. I think many of us get caught up in this hobby and tinker and fiddle incessantly. That's ok... that's what makes a hobby worthwhile and fun. I'm afraid I'm just not serious enough to delve much deeper into the 2 channel world than I am now. That's ok too.
  19. How sweet it is. It's fun to talk about our equipment, but I hope it's not at the expense of the music. Nothing is perfect in this old world, including our 2 channel rigs. I've put together the best system I can justify for now, and am relishing in the good music and vibes I hear and feel. Hope y'all feel the same.
