  1. I thought it was a great movie! I bought it and will probably watch it every Easter much like I have begun watching Saving Private Ryan every Memorial Day. Sometimes I just need that awakening for me to realize my life isn't bad and that I should be thankful to others while paying the most thanks to Jesus for offering his life for my sins.

I am sure this movie isn't for everyone but that is not uncommon for a movie like this. Heck, even a movie like LOTR has it's detractors, my brother in law can't make it even halfway though the Fellowship of the Rings. Yes, he isn't quite the Siskel of the family!

What are the T/S parameters on this sub? Does the car subwoofer go low enough to make a good HT sub?

  3. I wasn't very impressed with Van Helsing either but my wife liked it. I also have some young cousins that really liked it as well. I will try to watch it again just to see if it gets any better with time.

It may be a little work, but take your sub over to his house and change them out. That could tell you for sure if it is the sub, or the placement of the sub...

Same here, my 7 year old (going to be 8 in December) really loved it so I have it bought as a Christmas present for her. I will hav eto watch closer for the RF-7s though...

  6. Rob,

I have seen your sub that you built with the AV-15. How well do you like it? How much power are you providing to it? Do you think a sealed sub would be better with a 1000W amp? Might you be available to discuss the dimensions needed for the AV-15 sub?

    Thanks,

The biggest difference between a "car audio" driver and a home one are the compromises the designer feels are most important to it's potential customers. The drivers will technically work in either situation, but give you different trade-offs based on the chosen T/S parameters. Will you be building a vented enclosure or a sealed one?

As a generalised (but not mandatory) rule:

Car audio: enclosure size is of utmost importance... so bass extension and efficiency are often compromised

Home Audio: size is less at a premium so different compromises can be considered. Drivers like a Tempest use a large enclosure for good bass extension and pretty good efficiency. Some customers still want a small enclosure... so drivers like the Tumult trade efficiency for enclosure size.

The Brahma is an odd car-audio driver as it seems to have higher than average (for car audio) efficiency... but will also require a larger than average vented enclosure.

With 1000W the AV15 will be excursion limited if you build a vented enclosure.

My advice is to model both drivers in a program like WinISD and see what's most important to you.

    Rob

    ----------------

I am wanting a vented enclosure. I am wanting tuning capabilities down to 18 hz with a modest sized box. It sounds like the AV-15 would be better for my purposes EXCEPT, are you saying the 1000W amp will be too much for the AV-15? Will it bottom out?

Too much power for a Tempest, yet they recommend AV-15... the AV-15 is only rated 500W continuous, Tempest is rated 750WRMS. However, I am sure that the AV-15 can take more than 500W, but still... 1000W will give you a nice overhead for peaks. I am running my PA amp bridged on my 4-ohm Blueprint 1503. It can put out 1100WRMS, the 1503 can take 1000WRMS or so... so all works out well. It rarely sees 50W, though. heh But it's there is I need it- that is the point.

I've never seen anything about Eclipse drivers... are they for car audio? Most agree that car audio woofers should remain in cars... I mostly agree, but say if it models up well, it might just be worth a try.

    ----------------

Yes, the Eclipse is a car subwoofer but it had a decent Fs (I think around 22) and a hugh XMax. I saw one on Ebay so I thought I would ask, it is above what I wanted to pay now anyway.

I am seriously going to consider a Blueprint. The company that makes the AV-15 says he will receive the parts in late November to have some more AV-15s available in December. I don't really want to wait that long.

    Thanks,

I have read alot about the Tempest but I was assuming the Titantic or the AV-15 were better subwoofer speakers, greater XMax, etc. I was really wanting the aluminum cone of the AV-15 ...

    ----------------

Better is a very relative term... depends what you are after. The AV-15 and Titanic require smaller enclosures than the Tempest but trade efficiency to accomplish this. In other words, you get a smaller box, but have to buy more amplification to get a similar result.

Greater Xmax is only relevant if your woofer is reaching it's excursion limit given your amplification, the driver's thermal limit, and the enclosure/alignment you've chosen.

BTW, the aluminum cone is mostly a marketing tool... and ironically I've always preferred the aesthetics of black treated paper cones

    ----------------

I already have the 1000W amp from parts express and I have been told that is too much power for the Tempest. I am planning to build a ported encosure so I do expect it to be pretty good sized.

Anybody know anything about the Eclipse drivers?

Yes, I would definitely consider the 15" blueprint! I am just so short on money that I am hoping to find someone willing to part with one of their DIY woofers in a range I can afford. Otherwise, I will probably break down and buy one from an online retailer.

    Thanks for your help.

Another option, if you can find any left, is the JBL Sub1500. Very good 15" driver that works well in smallish sealed enclosures. Revel used them in their Sub15. I have four of them in a pair of sealed subs.

Another driver that I haven't seen to much on yet but that may be interesting is this one:

Bully costs $379 which is a little out of my range... actually alot out of my range. I was hoping for more in the $150 range... But, thanks for providing the option, I certainly like knowing what is available out there.

Have you looked at the Tempest from Adire? Not a bad woofer for $150. I have one in my DIY sub, and its solid to right at 15 hz. Windows even rattle at 11 hz.

No, I haven't, I have read alot about the Tempest but I was assuming the Titantic or the AV-15 were better subwoofer speakers, greater XMax, etc. I was really wanting the aluminum cone of the AV-15 but I am tired of waiting for a bargain because I want to get this built soon. 5.gif

  13. I am trying to find an AV-15 subwoofer speaker so I can complete my DIY subwoofer. If anyone knows where I can get one, preferably one for less than retail, I would most appreciate it.

I would consider a 15" Titantic or equivilent if anyone has a spare one.

    Thanks,

  14. I remember when I was in 7th grade some guys before our first class were talking about one of the Friday the 13th movies and how one girl was getting "nailed in the shower." At the time I didn't know it was that kind of "nailed." 4.gif

I don't have much inclination to watch them anymore although I did recently watch Jason X. It was certainly a far cry from the classic of the first Jason movie!

  15. KhornKerry,

Thanks for the detailed response. I have a rather old TV, circa 1993, that only has RCA cable connections. Does that mean I won't be able to use the OSD?

I tried disconnecting all of my video connections while I had the video source (coaxial cable) disconnected in hopes that it would reset the system just in case I had connected them with the video source already connected. Didn't work, still didn't have OSD.

So, is this OSD necessary for me to get the 3801 set-up to properly identify the DTS signal?

    Thanks,

    Dallas

What does the display of your receiver read while in what you are thinking is DD? You may be getting confused with DOLBY PRO-LOGIC. This is not DD5.1. Can be confusing for sure. Is the receiver detecting a digital signal? There should be a red LED on the front panel indicating a digital signal is present.

With that receiver, I believe it's like my 3300, you will need to assign the digital input to the corresponding input you have your DVD player connected to.

Also, as mentioned before, you will need to go into the set-up menu of the DVD player and insure DD5.1 and DTS is "turned on".

    ----------------

The receiver defaults the DVD Player digital connection to input 1, with both my receiver and my DVD player indicating that a digital connection is being made. I disconnected my toslink cable and the digital light indicator on both goes away. I reconnect it and the indicator light comes back so it does appear the digital signal connection is being made.

Since I don't have a digital connection to my TV I am not getting the on-screen set-up menu for the receiver so I don't know if there is something there that I need to change to set the system up properly. I will check on the DVD player again to see if there is anything else I need to do but I am selecting the DTS signal be sent to the receiver so I am at a loss as to what else I can/need to do to get it to working properly.

  17. I finally parted with 10 bucks and bought a toslink digital cable so now my DVD player is digitally connected to my Denon 3801. However, I still cannot get any sound from any of my DVDs with DTS sound. DD is coming across fine through the toslink cable but when I select DTS on the movie and DTS on the receiver it isn't making a sound, Anyone else have any ideas? Anyone with a 3801 that has experienced a similar problem? Am I missing a simple solution?

    Thanks,
