  1. Hello, I was wondering of the Fisher 400 receiver and the Fisher X-202-B Integrated amp both use the same cabinet?

No big deal if you have used them with good results before why not just trust them again to do what THEY feel needs to be done. Also I believe there are some comments about the fisher doctor on AA that you may find interesting. Craig ---------------- Craig, Yes I saw those comments also as I mentioned it took well over a week to return my call. My dealer would never do that ! BTW any tips on cleaning up the chassies and face of the unit? It is is nice shape already but I would like to go over the chassies with a metal polish ? I do not how that would react with the silk screened letters? I use Mothers as well as Amsoil metal polish on my bikes, it seems gentle enough but still I would like to hear some others ideas. Many years ago a close friend of mine gave me a MC 240 to sell for him and we were going to split the money. The chassies was pretty dirty so I decided to clean it up. I do not remember what I was using but did get pretty aggressive and next thing I was rubbing some off some of the printing on the nice chrome

Craig ---------------- Talked to Paul and he is not taking in any new work period. Believe me I have a MOST EXCELLENT shop here in Chicago who does excellent work. I have used them for a qazallion years. If its ok to say the name of the shop here in Chicago the name is Deltronics and is a legit shop not sombody working in his basement at his lesiure.
  10. Well while still waiting for my Fisher 400 to arrive I called the local repair shop here in Chicago and asked if they knew anything about a upgrade kit. I was told not really and it most likly would be a waste of money. They said that the would go through the unit and replace any bad caps and align the amp and tuner etc and checking everything else. I went on to tell them there is a kit online for about $80 ,they told me they would install it no problem but asked if I had any idea what was involved and what needed to be changed? Would anyone have the instructions? I do not need the service manual or anything. I would like to show the shop it and get some type of estimate what they would charge me to do the necessary work. The Fisher 400 I purchased off Ebay and is supposed to be in perfect working condition (yeah like I never heard that before ) but I will not know till it arives. So any info would be greatly appreciated. BTW I did talk with the Fisher Doc a few days ago, I had a call into him and he returned it about 1 1/2 weeks later. He ratteled off what the kit was but I did not have time to write it done and most important most of it was over my head anyway

  14. ---------------- On 7/25/2004 11:08:03 AM garymd wrote: Good point, however I would put my 299b that Craig rebuilt up against any mac (at reasonable volumes anyway). Some like the mac sound but I've owned 2 mc240s and niether sounded as good as the scott to me. Others will disagree but I a/b'd them extensively with some very good preamps. Wasn't even close (IMO). I don't want to speak for Craig but his mods usually run between $300 and $400. Mine was $340 and I paid $300 for the unit. That was before prices began to skyrocket. It holds its own against the much more expensive MkIIIs/Blueberry combo I have in my other system. ---------------- So I guess the best way to go if you want a nice Scott is not to buy it on Ebay as then will save you a lot of money right off the bat. Just keep a eye out in the local papers/internet etc and find a nice looking one. Then have Craig do the mod. BTW I notice that there is a nice looking LK72 on Ebay. I do not know how the sound would compare to the 229D, but as far as WPC they should be pretty close. I just missed a nice LK72 that had a bunch of mods done plus looked very sweet. That sold for $375 with no case, to me that is more like a reasonable price ;-) FWIW do a Google on Vaccuumtube.com if you want to pay the $$ I believe you will get some type of warranty also?

If you do get it, don't swap faceplates. Have Craig do his thing. It's just too nice and I guarantee you won't be happy with the stock sound. JjR, I guess you've never heard a scott after one of Craig's rebuilds. You really haven't heard how good one can sound until you hear one of his. ---------------- Nope sorry never heard the Craig mod. But I really suspect that it is not cheap. Buying a amp for $500 or $600 and then spending another possibly $500 (guess) for a mod you are already at the low end of the Mac amps. At that point I would just go with a Mac. Back to the 299-D on Ebay it is sure a sweet looking piece ,they guy has been selling a lot of Mint or darn close pieces on Ebay latley. The last was a Scott FM receiver that went for $$$$$ and before that was a Mint Sansui AU-20000

My current one has a horrible looking faceplate. ---------------- Yeah I was bidding on that one also, I gave up at $400.00 as far as that unit is concened all the guy did is give it a super clean job and played the unit through some speakers. There is no mention of any type of test equiptment used on the unit. For the money that unit is going to sell for I would expect a 90 day gaurntee. You probabaly would be better off buying a fully reconditioned unit from a dealer with a full warranty. I would say if it looks that you could get the unit for less than $500 I would concider it, if not there will be another. In the meantime I would keeo a look out for one here audioclassics or just Google a search. On the otherhand personally would go with somthing out of the Fisher line. One last thing if you Google the Scott tube site you will see that the 229-D on Ebay was not the last of the line (check the Serial numbers),it seems that there is a latter model 299-D S/N 249780 & up: used 233's output xformers: TRA-8-5-4 which may be better. Bottom line if you have the cash and dont mind possibly putting more into it Go For It, at the minumn I bought it I would have the unit checked by a professional even before I plugged it in. Best of luck!

It works great as a processor and produces very good sound, but during some more intense passages in rock or classical, the music seems to lose some of the detail and the soundstage. I thought that one of the reasons may be amplification. I heard a lot about the old Mondial amps, which are supposed to provide awesome power and warm sound for reasonable prices. I was looking at an Acurus A100 2x100 amp that I could get used for around $300. So I was wondering whether: 1. Is there any sense in upgrading to an offboard amp and using the receiver as a pre/pro. 2. Will it fix the issues I noted. 3. Is the A100 a good choice, or is there a better choice within the same price range. ---------------- I was quite satisfied with the Yamaha CR-2040 receiver (so its not a amp) but the preamp section is excellent. Alother thing is that the variable loudness controll which is sweet. The 2040 is 140 WPC DIN. Also most of the Yamaha CR 1020, 1040 lineup is also very nice as well as the slightly newer (1980ish) R-2000. All can be had usually for under $300

And as Craig likes to say, "Simple is good." I demo'ed one here on my K-horns before taking it over to my parents. It sounds really good; plenty of bass, nice crisp highs. My parents are running it on a set of Chorus IIs and it sounds good there as well. One drawback on it is availablity/cost of the 7868 output tubes. NOS is about the only way to go, though I did see that EH is going to be making a new 7868 tube. Check out http://www.turnstyle.com/nsc/search.asp They seem to be a bit pricey; you can get NOS tubes for that amount, but glad to see a new source for these tubes is out there. Enjoy. ---------------- Thanks!!!!!!
  19. Well I bit the bullett and bought a Fisher 400 Receiver, when they guy threw in free shipping I could not pass it up. So its back to another receiver , but I figure that I have to start somwhere plus. BTW is anyone using one on this site?

The Scott is all origional except for replacing the output coupling caps. I used it daily from last fall till a couple of weeks ago when I replaced it with another amp I like. The Scott works good and has low hum and sounds good. The Fisher has many tubes missing, but the amp works good when I put tubes in it. The tuner needs a tune-up. I'd let the Scott go for $200 plus shipping, the Fisher for $150 plus shipping. Both sound good with the Heresy 1's I have. The Scott has more full sounding bass. You can see the Scott on my website. http://www.geocities.com/the_hurdy_gurdyman/ Email me for more details. 24. Well back again, At this point I have been thinking why not try a tube unit for the bed room. I have been looking at the: Scott LK72 Scott LK72B Scott 222D Scott 233 And also some non-Scott units Bogen RP-230 Sherwood S8000 From what I read on the web the Bogen does have a small transformer in it. The others I really do not know nothing about. If one needs to refurbish a unit are we talking tons of money?

You want some major power, and you have $300 or less to spend. The funnel you have defined with these constraints is extremely narrow, and we have already travelled similar roads. Amps to avoid include Crown, QSC, Rotel, and the new stuff is too expensive when you are dipping your toe in 100 wpc or higher. I've seen some of the conversation you posted on AA, and it will be supremely difficult to get a better setup as you describe without wasting money. For these reasons, I was more direct than I usually am. If it has already worked well for you, and you liked the sound a lot, it probably will be better to till the productive field than hope for better, spend a fair amount of money chasing it, and keep finding a lesser sound. No slam, just telling you friends who like Yammies really don't like much else with their Heritage - and that is without any of your additional needs. ---------------- Dave, I do understand , my main goal is I guess was to find a Intergated SS amp that would match the Yamahas preformance. Now I'm finding out that it might be a impossible task for the money I want to spend. Thanks
